Hotels in Geneva Switzerland offer incredible accommodations in a city nicknamed “The Peace Capital”. Known for its natural beauty, its chocolate, its fondue, its Rolex watches, its Swiss Army knives, its trains, its physics and of course its hotels, Geneva is located on Switzerland’s remote western border, about an hour a half drive northwest from the French city Lyon, and a three-hour drive southwest from the Swiss capital Zurich. The setting for the Geneva Conventions, this second-most populated Swiss city has a long-standing reputation for both diplomacy and republicanism. Offering some of the lowest levels of financial risk and highest levels of privacy, the Swiss banking system can be traced back to the Great Council of Geneva, which outlawed the disclosure of information concerning the European upper class circa 1713. Indeed, hotels in Geneva Switzerland are some of the most beautiful in Europe, often offering immediate access to Lake Geneva, as well as the nearby, surrounding Swiss Alps. Before we get to hotels in Geneva Switzerland, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.
Geneva, the second-most populated city in Switzerland, is located in the country’s French-speaking region. When the Romans conquered the area circa 121 BC, it had been controlled by the Allobrogian, an Iron Age Gallic tribe. Geneva became Christian under the Late Roman Empire, having acquired its first bishop in the 5th century. During the Middle Ages, the city was ruled by a count as prescribed under the Holy Roman Empire. After the 14th century, Geneva enjoyed a high degree of self-governance, having been ruled by the House of Savoy and ultimately an oligarchic republican government, aligning itself with the Swiss Confederacy, and establishing the Republic of Geneva. John Calvin, the Calvinist, Protestant Reformer, became a spiritual leader of the city during this time. Catholic France cultivated Geneva as its own during the 18th century. After the Napoleonic Wars, Geneva was admitted to the Swiss Confederation on June 1, 1814, which led to the separation of church and state, and Geneva’s eventual flourishing during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Today, Geneva is a financial center and a worldwide center for diplomacy, being headquarters for many of the United Nations’ agencies as well as the Red Cross. Home to over 200,000 people, Geneva has a temperate climate, with average high temperatures at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and average highs at 40 degrees in January. Major points of interest include Lake Geneva, Reformation Wall, The Flowered Clock, Mont Blanc (skiing), St. Pierre Cathedral, Collège Calvin, International Committee of the Red Cross, Conservatory and Botanical Garden of the City of Geneva, Russian Orthodox Church, Institute et Musée Voltaire, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Victoria Hall, University of Geneva, CERN and Stade de Genève. Popular foods include Longeole, a traditional pork sausage with cumin, Malakoff, which is a fried cheese ball, Bircher Muesli, made with cream and lemon juice, Rösti, a type of potato fritter, fondue and chocolate. Popular drinks include craft beer, white wine, coffee and hot chocolate. Now that we have some background information, it’s time for hotels in Geneva Switzerland that are at the top of their class in luxury.

As you can see, hotels in Geneva Switzerland provide for some incredible accommodations around Lake Geneva. We hope you have found great value in this information and most of all, that you enjoy your time in Switzerland!
Once this Corona Virus subsides, I’m going back to Germany for a visit and have wanted to visit Geneva! I may choose one of these hotels to stay in as well. Did you research what the price would be in their currency or do you just have the dollar equivalent? Would they accept dollars? Most bigger European cities do.
Hello AA! The current conversion rate for USD to Swiss Francs is $1 to CHF.90 (so you would just multiply the above pricing by .90 currently). You’ll want to check and see what the conversion rate is in real time. When traveling to Switzerland you should exchange your currency for Swiss francs in advance. Hope that helps and happy travels!
Whoa! this site is so good! I honestly love how the layout is easy to navigate around, you did great on writing it too, I was thinking of a hotel when I need one sometime, I think I will check back at this site because it’s so good to red, it’s very easy to understand what I’m reading as well and that’s a plus for sure.
Hope to read more from you! Thanks again, Rebekah.
Thank you Rebekah and hope to see you again soon!
A few years ago I attended a convention at the Caux Palace in Switzerland. For two of the tours we went by Lake Geneva and I enjoyed walking through the shops in Geneva as I was able to practice my French. From the little I saw, I was swept away by the elegance and the calm peaceful environment. Reading through this article, reminds me that I want to go back to Switzerland on a more leisurely tour with my family and soak up all the goodness that is there. Thank you for the nudge.
