Warsaw known for: castles, museums, architecture (Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, neoclassical, contemporary), theaters, galleries, event venues, shopping malls, parks, monuments, pierogis
Warsaw is located on east-central Poland’s Masovian Plain. Nicknamed for its resiliency, especially after being almost razed to the ground by the end of World War II, Warsaw has been destroyed and rebuilt at least a handful of times. Phoenix City is in relative proximity to the Polish cities of Krakow (180 miles southwest) and Gdansk (210 miles northwest). Flowing through central Warsaw, the Vistula River is Poland’s longest river at 651 miles. The Vistula rises in southern Poland’s Barania Góra (mountain – 4,000 feet above sea level) and ultimately empties into the Vistula Lagoon / Gdansk Bay on the Baltic Sea.

When in Warsaw, keep in mind that it can get cool at night, even around summertime. As Warsaw has many great hotels near the airport, the city can make for a fine layover stop between Western and Eastern Europe, or even the Americas and Asia. Although Polish people are quite friendly, they are typically not tolerant of rudeness. Ignorance is also frowned upon, so brushing up on some Polish customs beforehand is advisable. And although English is actually widely spoken / understood in tourist areas especially, learning some Polish words / phrases beforehand would of course be respected. Warsaw’s currency is the zloty. cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Warsaw accommodations are some of Poland’s best. Before we get to Warsaw accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
Once located in today’s Bródno neighborhood, the Warsaw area’s first fortified settlements can be traced to the 9th century. By the 12th century, these settlements had expanded to the Ujazdów Castle area, or Jazdów. However, as the Jazdów settlement had succumbed to raids by nearby clans and dukes, a new fortified settlement was developed at Warszowa, a small fishing village. Around 1300 AD, Bolesław II of Masovia, The Prince of Płock, established what would evolve into modern-day Warsaw, with the first historical documents referencing the area as a castellany, or medieval territory, dating to 1313. By 1390, St John’s Cathedral was completed, and Warsaw became a seat of the Dukes of Masovia. Subsequently, the town was made the Duchy of Masovia’s capital circa 1413. Craftmanship and trade became key economic contributors at the onset, with about 4,500 people living in the town. New Town, a self-governing precinct established beyond the northern city wall, was populated during the 15th century, with the existing, older settlement becoming known as Old Town. Newcomers, or “undesirables”, particularly Jews, were not permitted to settle in Old Town. A minor revolt occurred in 1525, and following the sudden death of Janusz III, who was thought to have been poisoned by Bona Sforza, wife of Sigismund I of Poland, and thus the extinction of the local ducal line, Masovia was incorporated into the Kingdom of Poland circa 1526. In 1529, for the first time, Warsaw became the seat of the Sejm, or lower house of parliament. Around this time at the Old Town entrance, the Barbican fortified gate and subsequent Royal Palace, built by Italian architects, were constructed, along with streets and a marketplace. Religious freedom in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, by way of the Warsaw Confederation, was established in 1573. Warsaw’s status as a capital city can be traced to 1596 by way of the Polish-Swedish Union. Around this time, Polish King and Roman Catholic Sigismund III Vasa moved his court from Krakow to the area due to its central location. Ruled by their own laws, private and independent districts propped up in the Warsaw area. These districts, comprised of noble aristocrats, their lands, and the gentry social class below them. however, were besieged not long thereafter by Swedish, Brandenburgian and Transylvanian forces. During the late-17th century, Warsaw became an early-capitalist city under the reign of Augustus II The Strong. In 1795, the city was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia, becoming the capital of South Prussia. Warsaw was liberated from Prussia by Napoleon in 1806. In 1815, however, the city was taken under Russian control, which lasted for a century. German forces, at the beginning of the First World War, attacked Warsaw circa 1915. The 1920 Battle of Warsaw, resulting in a decisive Polish victory, saw to Poland’s retaking of the city from Russia. In late-1939, Germany’s Siege of Warsaw marked the beginning of World War II. After the Second World War, Poland once again succumbed to Russian control by way of the Eastern Bloc. Pope John Paul II, during the early-1980s, played a large role in liberating Poland from communist control, which ultimately revived the country to its 17th-century, capitalistic roots.
With a population of around 1.9 million “Varsovians”, Warsaw is Poland’s capital and largest city. Along with Frankfurt, London and Paris, Warsaw’s number of skyscrapers ranks highly amongst European cities, with Varso Place the European Union’s tallest building. Warsaw’s symbol is the mermaid, which can be found on statues throughout the city, as well as on the city’s coat of arms. Also symbolic of Warsaw, the Vistula River, throughout Poland, is lined with historical buildings and castles, examples of which being Basilica Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, Toruń Castle, Kwidzyn Castle and Gniew Castle. Founded in 1817, The Warsaw Stock Exchange is Central and Eastern Europe’s largest stock exchange. Technology, construction, food processing, chemicals, metallurgy, machinery, printing, textiles and cosmetics account for the city’s main industries. Poland’s media center, Warsaw is home to TVP, the country’s public service broadcaster. Phoenix City welcomed over 9 million tourists in 2022, with large numbers coming from the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and France in particular. Summer and Fall are particularly nice times to visit Warsaw. Summer highs average around 78 degrees Fahrenheit in July, while January winters average just above freezing. Additional points of interest include Wilanów Palace, Staszic Palace, Casimir Palace, Jabłonowski Palace, Krasiński Palace, Barbican, Downtown (Śródmieście), Marszałkowska Street (Marshall Street), Krakowskie Przedmieście (prestigious street), Royal Route, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Sigismund’s Column (King Sigismund III Vasa column/statue), Nicolaus Copernicus Monument, Łazienki Park, Grzybowski Square, Main Market Square, Canon Square, Water Filters Museum, St. Anne’s Church, Holy Cross Church, Carmelite Church, St. Kazimierz Church, Church of Saint Charles Borromeo, St. Alexander’s Church, Stare Powązki Cemetery, Warsaw University of Technology and Złote Tarasy (Golden Terraces). Popular foods are Kielbasa, Pierogi (dumpling), Placki Ziemniaczane (potato pancakes), Gołąbki (cabbage roll), Kapusta (braised sauerkraut or cabbage, bacon, mushroom and onion or garlic), Łazanki (pasta), Kotlet Schabowy (breaded pork cutlet), Barszcz (Polish red borscht), Rosół (chicken soup) and Pączki (Polish donuts). Vodka is mixed regularly in cocktails, while Baltic porter, Lager beer, wine and Śliwowicka łącka (a traditional Polish drink made from fermented beetroots, salt, garlic, and water) are also largely sought. With some background information on the area, it’s time for Warsaw accommodations that will help make for an unforgettable trip.
