Hotels in London offer exceptional accommodations in a destination nicknamed “The Big Smoke”. Rich in history, London is known for its museums, art galleries, iconic landmarks, bridges, parks, rivers, tea houses, pubs, red buses and black cabs. Boasting Europe’s largest urban economy with a GDP of €801.66 billion in 2017, London is located in southeastern England, about 120 miles southeast of Birmingham, and 80 miles northwest of Dover. Just south of London, the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is popular for walking, running, equestrian riding, cycling and scenic viewing, while the Chiltern Hills just westward is an expansive countryside with similar recreational activities, coupled with dining establishments and historic buildings. Within the city, well-known attractions include London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, The British Museum, Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square, Tower of London, Sky Garden, Royal Albert Hall, Natural History Museum, Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace. London’s professional football clubs (and venues) are Chelsea F.C. (Stamford Bridge), West Ham United F.C. (London Stadium), Arsenal F.C. (Emirates Stadium), Tottenham Hotspur F.C. (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium) and Crystal Palace F.C. (Selhurst Park). London’s main international airport is Heathrow Airport. Two high-speed trains that link the UK to mainland Europe by way of the Channel Tunnel are Eurostar and High Speed 1. Known as “the Tube”, The London Undergound is the world’s oldest subway system. When traveling to The Big Smoke, keep in mind that public transportation is a fine mode of travel by way of an Oyster Card, places such as Oxford Street and Leicester Square can get crowded with tourists, and most museums are free and best visited at night. London’s currency is the pound sterling, cars travel on the left-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. On average, tourists spend about $200 per day in London. Top events include Wimbledon, Taste of London, Marylebone Food Festival, EFG London Jazz Festival, London Design Festival, London Fashion Week (at 180 The Strand), The London Marathon, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, London New Year’s Day Parade, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, The Boat Race, Notting Hill Carnival, C2C: Country to Country, BBC Proms, BST Hyde Park, Elrow Town London, Wide Awake Festival, In the Round at the Roundhouse, Queen’s Yard Summer Party, Mighty Hoopla, Field Day Festival, Wireless Festival London, Project 6, Brick Lane Jazz Festival, Meltdown, All Points East, Cross the Tracks, Wilderness Festival (Oxfordshire), Glastonbury Festival (Pilton, Somerset) and Camp Bestival (Dorset & Shropshire). Hotels in London are some of the UK’s most brilliant accommodations. Before we get to hotels in London, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
Discovered upstream from Vauxhall Bridge in 1993, timber from a Bronze Age bridge has been radiocarbon dated to somewhere between 1750–1285 BC. Meanwhile, downstream from Vauxhill Bridge, the foundation of a large timber structure dating to 4800-4500 BC was unearthed in 2010. Roman London became the area’s first major settlement in 47 AD following a Roman invasion four years prior. In 61 AD, Queen Boudica of the Iceni tribe stormed the Roman settlement and razed it to the ground. However, the Roman’s retook and rebuilt the area, with Londinium becoming the Roman province of Britannia’s principal city by 100 AD. Roman rule collapsed in the early 5th-century, when the walled city of Londinium became abandoned. Known as Lundenwic, an Anglo-Saxon settlement developed just west of the old Roman city around 500 AD. Viking attacks, beginning in 851 AD, brought decline in what had again become a relatively major port. Around this time, London fell under Danelaw, under which laws of the Danes presided, with the Danish warlord Guthrum ruling over East Angles from London to Chester. Danelaw was agreed upon between Guthrum and the West Saxon king Alfred the Great. Alfred retook London from the Vikings circa 886, as recorded by the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. This “rebuilding” of Londinium saw to Lundenwic’s abandonment, and the revival of life and trade within the old Roman walls. Westminster Abbey was founded in 959 AD as a monastery dedicated to Saint Peter. William the Conquerer, in 1066 after winning the Battle of Hastings, was crowned King of England. Thereafter, William went on to build the Tower of London. In the mid-14th century, The Black Death accounted for nearly a third of the city’s demise. The Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 resulted in the sacking of the Tower of London, mass execution of royal officials, charters being granted to rebel towns, and a subsequent rebel suppression and execution of rebel leaders. Prior to being expelled by Edward I (Edward Longshanks) in 1290, England’s Jewish population had been centered in London. A gradual shift to Protestantism occurred during the Tudor “Reformation” period, at which time much of London property passed from church to private ownership. With The Royal Exchange‘s founding in the 16th century, monopoly traders such as the East India Company expanded trade to the New World. In 1599, William Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre was constructed during the English Renaissance theatre. The Gunpowder Plot on the 5th of November, 1605 was an unsuccessful regicide attempt against King James I by a group of English Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, which resulted in eight plotters being sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered. Beginning in August 1642, the English Civil War between Parliamentarians and Royalists resulted in a Parliamentarian victory, the execution of Charles I and the establishment of the Commonwealth of England. Tragic events occurred during the 17th century by way of the Great Plague and Great Fire of London. The Bow Street Runners, London’s first professional police force, was established in 1750 to fight rampant crime. Starting with George II in 1762, Buckingham House grew over the next 75 years into Buckingham Palace. In the early 19th century, Fleet Street became a center of the British press, around which time the Royal Navy became the world’s leading war fleet. Urbanization occurred during the Industrial Revolution. Teashops were founded on “High Streets” during the early 20th century. During the First and Second World Wars, London was bombed by the Germans via Blitzkriegs, meaning “lightning war”. Wembley Stadium hosted the Olympics in 1948. From the 1970s into the 1990s, bomb attacks occurred in London as a consequence of The Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Home to nearly 9 million “Londoners”, London today is the United Kingdom’s capital and largest city, as well as the European Union’s largest. Just west of London, the City of Westminster harbors the Houses of Parliament, along with much of the British government. Kensington and Chelsea are two of London’s most affluent neighborhoods, while the West End is home to entertainment and shopping districts. Europe’s most visited city, London boasts the world’s busiest airport system. Over 300 languages are spoken throughout The Big Smoke. Greater London’s total area equals 611 square miles. Flowing through the city, the River Thames rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire and, via the Thames Estuary, continues into the North Sea near Tilbury, Essex and Gravesend, Kent. A temperate, oceanic climate renders warm-to-hot summers, which average about 75 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and cool winters at around 46 degrees in January. For roughly 33% of the year, rain can be expected, with October typically being the rainiest month. Additional points of interest include Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Kew Gardens, Greenwich, Piccadilly Circus, St Margaret’s Westminster, The Shard, Nelson’s Column, St Paul’s Cathedral, Canary Wharf, London Stock Exchange, National Gallery, London St Pancras International, Victoria Coach Station, University of London, Imperial College London, London School of Economics, King’s College London, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Royal Observatory, Greenwich, Harrods, Sherlock Holmes Museum, Odeon Cinema, Abbey Road Studios and Regent’s Park. Foods include fish and chips, bangers and mash, English breakfast, Sunday roast, chicken tikka masala, roast duck, scones, crumpets and sticky puddling, while popular drinks are gin and tonic, beer and of course tea. With a little background information on the area, we are ready for hotels in London that are sure to help make for an unforgettable experience.
