Hotels in Athens

Hotels in Athens Greece

Hotels in Athens offer incredible views of some of the world’s most ancient and cherished architecture in a destination nicknamed “The City of the Violet Crown”.  Known for democracy and philosophy, Athens’ history is well-preserved and visible to this day. The Acropolis, arguably Athens’ most famous landmark, dates to the fifth century BC.  When traveling to Athens, it’s a good idea to carry cash, though it’s best kept secured in public areas. Currency is the Euro and the drinking age is 18 years old.  Athens Epidaurus Festival, Apokries (Carnival), Rockwave Festival, Release Athens Festival, Athens Street Food Festival, Athens Photo Festival, Athens Open Air Film Festival, Athens Digital Arts Festival and Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival are some of the city’s biggest events. Olympiacos, Greece’s most successful football club, plays its games at Karaiskaki Stadium in the port city Pireas, which is directly southwest of Athens. Hotels in Athens are exciting to consider. Before we get to hotels in Athens, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

For 5,000 years mankind has thrived in the area around Athens. Further evidence from the Cave of Schist dates human existence in the area to around 9,000 BC. Throughout early history, Athenians were burdened by Persian Empire invasions. As lionized in the movie 300, King Leonidas, with around 7,000 Greeks, attempted to fend off as much as 300,000 Persians during the Battle of Thermopylae, which resulted in a Greek defeat. The Greeks won back their land from the Persians by way of the Battle of Plataea. Thereafter, the Golden Age of Athenian democracy saw the likes of Socrates and Pericles transform Athens into a major, Ancient Greek city, and the cornerstone of what would become Western Civilization. During Late Antiquity, Athens saw both prosperity by way of the Crusades and Italian trade, and collapse via the Ottoman Empire invasion of 1458. It wasn’t until 1832 through the Greek War of Independence that Greece at last achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire, becoming the Kingdom of Greece. Athens gradually expanded outward from the Acropolis in the form of Neoclassical architecture. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens circa 1896. Following World War II, the city experienced a rapid growth in population, resulting in a different type of invasion, this time from air pollution. Anti-pollution measures in the 1990s, as well as improvements in infrastructure, resulted in better air quality. In 2004, over a hundred years since its first Olympic trials, Athens hosted the Summer Olympics.

One of the world’s oldest cities and a popular tourist destination since antiquity, Athens is the capital and largest city in Greece. Today the city is home to over 650,000 Greeks. It experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with summer high temperatures averaging in the low-90s degrees Fahrenheit, and average winter temps in the mid-50s. Architectural styles range from Greco-Roman to Neoclassical to modern. Building height restriction laws ensure that the Acropolis remains visible throughout the city. Infrastructure and local attractions have further improved due largely to the 2004 Olympics. Nearly 150 theatrical stages occupy Athens. A worldly center for archaeological research, The City of the Violet Crown has as much to discover above ground as it does below.  Major points of interest include Zappeion Hall, Monastiraki, Lycabettus, Panathenaic StadiumAthens Olympic Sports Complex, Hellenic Parliament, Roman Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Stadiou Street, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, National Gardens, Ermou street, Athens Tower, National Library of Greece, Academy of Athens, Athens University, Old Parliament House, Acropolis Museum, National Theatre of Greece, Karaiskakis Stadium and The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. Traditional Greek food includes souvlaki, or grilled meat skewers, moussaka, a type of pasta similar to lasagna, spanakopita (pronounced spae·nuh·kow·puh·tuh), which is spinach pie, and horiatiki salad. Greece’s most popular alcoholic beverage is Ouzo, a spirit made from grapes, with a taste much like that of absinthe. Additionally, a type of white sparkling wine is known as Debina. Now that we have some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Athens that are sure to help make for an outstanding trip.
