Before we get to hotels in Denver, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Prior to the 1858 Pike’s Peak gold rush, the Denver-area was inhabited by several Native American tribes to include Apaches, Arapahoes, Cheyennes, Comanches and Utes. The 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie, also known as the Horse Creek Treaty, between the United States and a handful of Tribal Nations’ chiefs stipulated, at least on the face of it, the ceasing of inter-tribal fighting, safe passage for white migrants / railroad surveyors through native lands and the allowing of the US government to build roads and army posts. If the terms were broken, the tribe would pay compensation to the US government. If the terms were abided, the US government would offer protection to Plain Indians along with a $50,000 annuity. Although the treaty was signed on September 17, 1851, it was never actually ratified. After a gold prospecting boom in the area, an influx of white miners and settlers established towns and farms, while improving roadways. The Treaty of Fort Laramie was never enforced. In 1858, the mining town of Montana City was established by Lawrence, Kansas gold prospectors on the banks of the South Platte River. This site would eventually develop into modern Denver, though the initial Montana City site was abandoned in favor of Auraria and St. Charles City. Kansas Territory land speculators General William Larimer and Captain Jonathan Cox staked a claim on a South Platte River and Cherry Creek bluff on November 22, 1858. Larimer named the site Denver City after Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. Larimer and his St. Charles City Land Company associates sold town parcels to merchants and miners in hopes that the site would develop into a major city. Goods trading, livestock, saloons and gambling helped sustain the early frontier town of Denver City. Land parcels were traded,  and even gambled away, to Auraria miners. The region’s first overland wagon route was secured in May 1859, when Denver City residents donated 53 lots to the Leavenworth & Pike’s Peak Express. In 1863, Western Union chose the town for its regional terminus. The February 18, 1861 Treaty of Fort Wise ceded more than 90 percent of Southern Cheyenne Indian Territory to the United States. On February 28, 1861, the Colorado Territory was created. Following Arapahoe County’s formation on November 1, 1861, Denver City was incorporated 6 days later. Denver City became the territorial capital in 1867 (shortening its name to Denver), and the permanent state capital in 1881. The 1864 Sand Creek massacre occurred during the Colorado War (1863-1865), which resulted in the Medicine Lodge Treaty and the relocation of the Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples. The Denver-Pacific Railway, designed to connect Denver to the transcontinental railroad, was completed on June 24, 1870. The railway helped immensely. Millionaires such as Horace Tabor built mansions. Tabor built a business block at 16th and Larimer along with the Tabor Grand Opera House. Luxury hotels such as the Brown Palace Hotel (present-day – The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa, Autograph Collection) began accommodating guests. In the late-19th century, however, corruption plagued the city through crime bosses such as Jefferson Randolph “Soapy” Smith II and Louis Herbert Belonger “Lou Blonger“, who, alongside elected officials and police, controlled elections and gambling. Around this time a depression also occurred by way of a silver crash. The city overcame these adversities, however, during a period referred to as the “The Carnation Gold Rush” (1880s-1930s). Bears Stadium, which would later become Mile High Stadium, was originally built for minor league baseball in 1948. A major fire broke out at Rocky Flats Plant (nuclear weapon facility – 15 miles from Denver) in 1957, resulting in radioactive contamination in parts of Denver. Founded on August 14, 1959, the Denver Broncos won their first American Football League (AFL) game against the Boston Patriots (13-10) on September 9, 1960. Denver was selected to host the 1976 Winter Olympics, but voters struck down the games due to high cost of public funding, and they were moved to Innsbruck, Austria instead.

Colorado’s capital, Denver is home to around 715,000 “Denverites”. The city’s skyline is complimented by the distant Rocky Mountains. Rocky Mountain National Park is about an hour and a half drive westward. Denver has over 340 high-rise buildings, the tallest being Republic Plaza at 717 feet. Colorado was one of the first USA states to legalize marijuana, which quickly became a billion dollar industry. Mile High City welcomes around 37 million visitors annually. Home to a semi-arid continental climate, Denver experiences warm / hot summers and mild / cold winters. On average, the city receives over 53 inches of snowfall per year, along with about 300 days of sunshine. Summer high temperatures average around 89 °F, while winters average around 46 °F. Additional points of interest include Downtown, Millennium Bridge, Union Station, Colorado State Capitol, Denver Pavilions, 16th Street Mall, Denver Performing Arts Complex, Cheesman Park (lake, walking paths) and University of Denver. Local foods include barbecued meats, steak, cheeseburgers, burritos, tacos and green chili cheese fries. Popular drinks are lager & craft beer, whiskey, signature cocktails and wine. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Denver that will help make for an outstanding trip.
