Warsaw known for: castles, museums, architectural range (Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, neoclassical, contemporary), theaters, galleries, event venues, shopping malls, parks, monuments, pierogis
Located on east-central Poland’s Masovian Plain, Warsaw is about 180 miles northeast of Krakow and 210 miles southeast of Gdansk. Giving credence to its name and nickname, Warsaw has been destroyed and rebuilt at least a handful of times (hit heavily during World War II). Flowing through central Warsaw the Vistula River is Poland’s longest river at 651 miles. The Vistula rises in southern Poland’s Barania Góra (mountain – 4,000 feet above sea level) and ultimately empties into the Vistula Lagoon / Gdansk Bay on the Baltic Sea.

When traveling to Warsaw there are some things to keep in mind. Nights can be cool even in summer. Thankfully English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Polish people are known to be friendly, though they typically are not tolerant of rudeness. It might be helpful to brush up on some Polish customs. Warsaw distinguishes itself with fine airport accommodations (coupled with central location) and as such could easily make for a favorite layover stop between European points or even continents. Warsaw accommodations are some of Poland’s best. Before we get to Warsaw accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Found in Warsaw’s present-day Bródno neighborhood, a fortified settlement has been dated to the 9th century. The settlement expanded to the Ujazdów Castle area (Jazdów) by the 12th century. Nearby clans and dukes would raid the first Jazdów settlement, causing a new fortified settlement to be built at Warszowa (small fishing village). Prince of Płock Bolesław II of Masovia set the foundation for modern Warsaw at the turn of the 14th century. 1313 historical documents refer to the area as a castellany (medieval territory). St John’s Cathedral was completed by 1390. Warsaw initially would become a seat of the Dukes of Masovia, and then capital of the Duchy of Masovia in 1413. At the onset about 4,500 people lived in the town of mainly craftsmen and traders. A self-governing precinct, “New Town” was established in the 15th century beyond the northern town wall. The original settlement would become known as “Old Town”. Newcomers or “undesirables” (particularly Jews) were not permitted to settle in Old Town. A minor revolt occurred in 1525. Duke Janusz III may have been poisoned by Bona Sforza, wife of Sigismund I of Poland, though it was never proven. At any rate Janusz’s death marked the extinction of the local ducal line, and Masovia (historical region to include Warsaw) was incorporated into the Kingdom of Poland circa 1526. For the first time in 1529 Warsaw became the seat of the Sejm (lower house of parliament). Around that time the Barbican (fortified gate) was installed near Old Town entrance, Italian architects built Royal Palace, and streets and a marketplace were constructed. The Warsaw Confederation established religious freedom in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth circa 1573. The 1596 Polish-Swedish Union saw Warsaw become a capital city. Thereafter Roman Catholic, Polish King Sigismund III moved his court from Krakow to the area due to its central location. Private and independent districts would pop-up in the Warsaw area in an attempt to be ruled by their own laws. These districts consisted of nobles, their lands, and the gentry (social class) below them. Not long after the districts’ establishment, however, they were besieged by Swedish, Brandenburgian and Transylvanian forces. Under the late-17th century reign of Augustus II “The Strong”, Warsaw would become an early-capitalist city. In 1795 the Kingdom of Prussia annexed the city. Warsaw became the capital of South Prussia, only to be liberated by Napoleon in 1806. Starting in 1815 Russia would take control of the city for over a century. German forces attacked Warsaw near the onset of World War I (1915). The 1920 Battle of Warsaw between Poland and Soviet Russia resulted in a decisive Polish victory, with Poland retaking the city from longstanding Russian control. Germany’s late-1939 Siege of Warsaw marked the beginning of World War II. Poland would again succumb to Russian control by way of the “Eastern Bloc” following the Second World War. In the early 1980s Pope John Paul II played a pivotal role in liberating Poland from communist control, and Poland would at last return to its 17th-century, early-capitalist roots.
Home to around 1.9 million “Varsovians”, Warsaw is Poland’s capital and largest city. A mermaid, the city’s symbol can be seen on statues throughout the city as well as the coat of arms. Phoenix City hosted over 9 million people in 2022, with a majority of visitors coming from the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and France. Warsaw is home to many skyscrapers. At 1,017 feet Varso Place ranks as Europe’s tallest building by architectural height (highest usable floor – 755 feet). The Warsaw Stock Exchange (founded 1817) is Central and Eastern Europe’s largest stock exchange. Poland’s public service broadcaster, TVP is headquartered in Warsaw. Basilica Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, Toruń Castle, Kwidzyn Castle and Gniew Castle are just some examples of the numerous historical buildings and castles found along the Vistula River. Warsaw summer high temperatures average about 78 degrees Fahrenheit (July), while January winters stay just above freezing.
