When traveling to Lisbon there are some things to keep in mind. Portuguese is the city’s official language, though English is widely spoken in downtown tourist areas. In Lisbon one should address a woman as senhora and a man as senhor. Never speak Spanish to a Portuguese person. Lisbon generally is considered safe, though pickpocketing is known to occur. To avoid looking like a tourist one should never dress in all-white. Also use an umbrella rather than a poncho if it’s raining. Stretching in public is considered rude. True to its nickname Lisbon has many sloping terrains. Sneakers, a winter jacket and light-colored summer clothing are particularly good items to pack. Lisbon accommodations are some of Portugal’s best. Before we get to Lisbon accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

 

 

Archaeological findings near Castle of São Jorge suggest that an Iron Age people (8th-6th centuries BC) inhabited the Lisbon area and traded commercially with the Phoenicians. Prior to the Roman era the Lisbon area was settled by Pre-Celtic tribes and Pre-Indo-European tribes, respectively. Phoenician trade in the area drew Carthage’s attention and subsequent settlement therein, which would lead to clashes with the Roman Republic. Roman general, strategist and statesman Scipio Africanus defeated Carthaginian forces in Eastern Hispania (Iberian Peninsula) at the turn of the 3rd century BC. The area would be integrated into Lusitania (Roman province), with its citizens being granted Roman citizenship. Modern-day Lisbon became known as “Olissipo” under Roman rule. Frequent Indo-European Lusistanian raids and rebellions led the Romans to build a wall around Olissipo. Prosperous, with far-reaching trade routes to other Roman provinces and prized exports (garum fish sauce, wine, salt, Lusitanian horses), Olissipo saw many buildings under Roman-Augustus rule (great theater, baths, temples, large necropolis, large forum, multi-storied apartment buildings). Constantine “the Great” having embraced Christianity, most of the Western Roman Empires’ ancient cities (to include Olissipo) would begin to crumble. In 356 AD Potamius became the area’s first bishop. Rome’s fate would be sealed through acts such as “The Holy Martyrs of Lisbon”, where sibling-sisters Verissimus, Maxima, and Julia were tormented and executed for refusing to renounce their Christian faith. Olissipo would transition into a prized Christian center after the Fall of Rome, and barbarian invasions ensued. Sarmatians (ancient Iranian nomadic peoples), Alans (North Caucasus nomads), Vandals (Germanic people), Suebi (Germanic) and Visigoths (Germanic) would occupy the area, respectively, starting in 409 AD. Umayyad Caliphate Muslim forces overran the Germans in early-August 711 AD. In 1022 AD the Taifa of Lisbon (medieval Islamic-Arab kingdom) was established. In turn the larger Taifa of Badajoz (Moorish) conquered the area circa 1094. En route to the Holy Land in 1108, Sigurd I-led Norwegian Crusaders briefly occupied the Lisbon area, though they were supplanted by Moorish Almoravids in 1111. Along with crusader knights Afonso I of Portugal besieged and reconquered Lisbon in 1147. Alfonso’s retaking of Lisbon is considered one of Lisbon’s most significant events, as it returned the city’s roughly 154,000 residents to Christian rule. Mosques were destroyed or converted into churches. The Arabic language lost its place in everyday life before disappearing altogether.  In 1255 Lisbon became the new Portuguese territory’s capital (central location). Lisbon had become an important trading post between Northern European and Mediterranean cities by the end of the Middle Ages. Most Portuguese expeditions set sail from Lisbon during the Age of Discovery (end of 15th century – beginning of 17th century). Vasco da Gama left Lisbon for India in 1498, and from there a 16th-century golden age would ensue. Flowing through Lisbon, commerce (spices, textiles, sugar, slaves, etc.) was shipped amongst Africa, India, the Far East and Brazil. Manueline-style architecture arose. The Spanish Habsburgs initiated a 60-year Portugal / Spain dual-monarchy in 1580. Portuguese independence from the Habsburgs was restored by way of the 1640 Portuguese Restoration War. Significant earthquakes vexed the area for a few centuries thereafter. Prosperous times occurred in the early-18th century, when gold was discovered in Brazil. King John V built Baroque-style churches and theaters. In the early-19th century Napoléon Bonaparte invaded Portugal, forcing Queen Maria I and Prince-Regent John to flee temporarily to Brazil. Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated in Lisbon, February 1, 1908. During World War II Lisbon was one of a few neutral European ports, harboring both refugees and spies. The 1940 Portuguese Exhibition attracted 3 million visitors. Throughout the 20th century Lisbon would be the site of three revolutions: the October 5, 1910 revolution (ended Portuguese monarchy & installed unstable / corrupt Portuguese First Republic), the June 6, 1926 revolution (ended first republic & established corporatist Estado Novo – Portuguese Second Republic) and the 1974 Carnation Revolution (reformed country into current Portuguese Third Republic – semi-presidential, constitutional).

Portugal’s capital and largest city, Lisbon is home to around 550,000 “alfacinha” today. Lisbon is mainland Europe’s westernmost capital city. Bound on the west by the affluent Portuguese Riviera, Lisboa is one of the world’s oldest cities and Portugal’s political center. Lisbon accommodates over 3,000,000 visitors annually. Lisbon Cruise Port (three-floor terminal) is one of Europe’s leading cruise line destinations. Capable of reaching 137 miles per hour, Alfa Pendular high-speed railway connects Lisbon to other major Portuguese cities. A benchmark index of companies (stock market ), PSI-20 (part of Euronext Lisbon) held a market capitalization of over €60 billion in 2010. Home to a Mediterranean climate, Lisbon enjoys mild weather year-round. Summers average in the mid-70s Fahrenheit while winters range in the low-to-mid-50s.
