Humans have settled the Berlin area for an estimated 60,000 years. A 9000-BC deer mask has been discovered in the area. Throughout its early history the Berlin area was inhabited by the Lusatian culture, Germanic tribes, Semnones, Burgundians, Hevelli and Sprevane, respectively (2,000 BC – 7th century). As part of the Holy Roman Empire’s Margraviate of Brandenburg (1157AD-1806) the region fell under Germanic rule (12th century), with Albert the Bear founding Brandenburg circa 1157. Berlin is thought to have been founded circa 1237. Remnants of a 1280 AD house foundation have been found in Berlin Mitte. A “staple right” was awarded to Berlin on account of two trade routes, Via Imperii (Holy Roman Empire route) and an eastern-reaching, Bruges-Novgorod route, which passed through the city. A staple right was the right to hold a “regular market”. Merchants were forced either to make staple-right city stops along the tollway or pay a trade tax in order to avoid a staple-right city. Comprised altogether of Brandenburg electors, Prussian kings and German emperors, the House of Hohenzollern ruled Berlin from the late-11th century to 1918. The towns of Spandau and Köpenick formed an alliance in 1307. “Irontooth” Frederick II constructed the Royal Palace (starting 1448). The palace first-served as royal residence in 1486, when John II (posthumously “John Cicero”) rose to power. Berlin-Cölln lost its status as a “free Hanseatic League city” and officially became Lutheran in 1539. The Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) took a heavy toll on Berlin, with about half of the city’s population killed, and a third of its houses either damaged or destroyed. Frederick William initiated a policy in 1640 to promote immigration and religious tolerance. By the year 1700 about 30 percent of Berlin’s population had become French (Huguenot immigration), with additional immigrants arriving from Bohemia, Poland and Salzburg. A personal union between the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia formed the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701. Elector of Brandenburg Frederick III crowned himself King Frederick I. Centralizing power, Frederick I replaced Königsberg (Kalingrad, Russia) with Berlin as the Kingdom of Prussia’s capital city. In 1709 Berlin merged with the four cities of Cölln, Friedrichswerder, Friedrichstadt and Dorotheenstadt. Frederick II “Frederick the Great ” rose to power in 1740 and saw both a period of Enlightenment and the Seven Years’ War. The War of the Fourth Coalition (1806–1807) between France and Prussia saw Napoleon Bonaparte arise victorious. Napoleon marched into Berlin in 1806 but ultimately granted the city self-government. Berlin would become part of the “Province of Brandenburg” circa 1815. The 19th-century Industrial Revolution saw Berlin become Germany’s main railway hub and economic center, while the city’s suburban areas expanded. In 1871 Berlin became the newly-founded German Empire‘s capital. Berlin city district separated from Brandenburg ten years later. German Expressionism (cultural movement) sprung-up in the early 20th century. Following World War I The Weimar Republic was proclaimed,, with Berlin remaining capital city. A time of prosperity in the western world, the Roaring Twenties would be a period of economic uncertainty for Berlin. Albert Einstein lived in Berlin (1914-1932) and received the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. Curious enough Einstein left Germany in 1932 to lecture in America and would never return to Germany. From 1933 to 1939 about 80,000 (half) of Berlin’s Jewish population emigrated from the city. Having first gone to Berlin in 1921 on a Nazi Party fundraising trip, Adolf Hitler returned to the city as Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. Inspired by certain architecture that he had seen in Vienna, Hitler had grand architectural designs planned for Berlin (never fully realized). The 1936 Summer Olympics were held in Berlin (Olympiastadion built for the occasion). Instigated by the assassination of a German diplomat (Ernst vom Rath) by Polish-Jewish Welmar-Germany expatriate Herschel Grynszpan in Paris, Germany’s November 9, 1938 Kristallnacht (“Night of Broken Glass” / “November pogroms”) saw at least 91 deaths, Jewish structures damaged / destroyed and thousands of Jews imprisoned (Berlin – Sachsenhausen concentration camp). Holding not only Jews but other people from across Europe along with Allied POWs, multiple Nazi prisons and camps existed in Berlin throughout World War II. Allied air raids to include the 1945 Battle of Berlin destroyed large parts of Berlin while causing heavy civilian casualties from 1943-45. Presumably (Soviet account) Hitler was killed in Berlin’s Führerbunker on January 16, 1945. Following the Second World War Berlin was divided into West (United States, United Kingdom & France) and East (Soviet Union), with all four “Allies” sharing administrative responsibilities. The Cold War was spurred by events such as the Berlin Blockade, where the Western Allies’ introduction of the Deutsche Mark into West Berlin caused the Soviet Union to block access to railways, roads and canals. The Berlin Airlift (Summer 1948 – Fall 1949) saw American and British air forces drop supplies onto West Berlin. Over 250,000 total flights dropped up to 12,941 tons of supplies (food and fuel) per day. In 1949 the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in West Germany. Meanwhile, the Marxist–Leninist German Democratic Republic formed in East Germany. With the Cold War curtain closing, the Berlin Wall was to be be built around the entirety of West Berlin starting 1961. An infamous US-Soviet tank standoff occurred at “Checkpoint Charlie”, a Berlin Wall crossing point (East & West Berlin) during the Cold War.  3 months before his assassination President John F. Kennedy gave his June 26, 1963 Ich bin ein Berliner speech in West Berlin, which renounced Communism. East and West Berlin foreign ministers met for a 1971 Four-Power agreement that guaranteed safe-passage between East and West Berlin. On June 12, 1987 President Ronald Reagan gave a speech at Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, infamously calling-on Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” With the Winston Churchill-dubbed “Iron Curtain” reopening on August 19, 1989, followed by the Berlin Wall’s destruction on November 9th of the same year, the German people could finally find respite. Following the Cold War Berlin experienced significant urban development. United States, French and British soldiers marched in a June 18, 1994 Berlin parade to commemorate the reunification of the city.

Home to over 3.8 million “Berliners”, Berlin is Germany’s capital and largest city. About 85% of Berlin’s economy is derived through the service sector. A stadtstaaten (city-state) as well as a federal state, Berlin accommodates over 30 million annual visitors. One of the world’s largest botanical gardens is Botanischer Garten, which spans 110 acres and is home to about 22,000 different plant species. An example of canting arms, the city’s coat of arms displays a bear. Berlin experiences a temperate climate. Summers and winters remain relatively mild, with August high temperatures in the upper 70s (Fahrenheit) and January highs in the mid-upper 30s.
