As bars and clubs typically remain open until 4 AM, the siesta is important especially with the younger crowd. Malaga’s currency is the Euro, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Malaga accommodations are some of Southern Spain’s best. Before we get to Malaga accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Around 700 BC, Phoenicians from Tyre founded a colony named Malake near present-day Malaga. The ancient colony became an important waypoint between Phoenicia and the Strait of Gibraltar. Sometime around the 6th century, Malake came under Carthaginian rule. Early Malaga was positioned between Gibralfaro Hill and the mouth of the Malaca flumen, or Guadalmedina River. The Roman Republic took control of the town, known to them as Malaca, following the Punic Wars. 1st century BC Greek geographer Strabo noted Malaca’s Phoenician characteristics, which contrasted the more Hellenistic, neighboring settlement of Mainake. Discovered in the 20th century near Malaca, the Lex Malacitana bronze tablet depicts, in Latin, the Roman-era Flavian municipal law. The Lex Malacitana, presently on display at Madrid’s National Archaeological Museum, provides new insights into the area’s municipal court system. During their time in Malaca, the Romans built a theater. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the area was ruled first by the Visigoths, and then by the Byzantine Empire circa 552 AD. The town was rooted in fishing and maritime trade, which the Byzantines revived by restoring and expanding the docks. In 615, Visigoth King Sisebut retook the town from the Byzantines. About 100 years later, Arab and Berber forces took control of Málaga, which was known to them as Mālaqah. Málaga became a capital city in 930, replacing Archidona. Persian historian Aḥmad al-Rāzī noted the area’s vineyards and high-quality raisins in the early-10th century. The Hammudids, following the collapse of the Umayyad dynasty, established the Taifa of Málaga kingdom in the 11th century. Shortly thereafter, control of the city changed hands amongst the Algerian Granadan Zirids, the Sevillian Abbadids and the North African Almoravids. Malaga became a part of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada in the 13th century. Maghrebi explorer Ibn Battuta noted the town’s beauty, along with its abundance of foodstuffs, fruits and gilded pottery, while passing through in 1325. Málaga was the main port of the Emirate of Granada Nasrid dynasty in the 15th century. Around this time, Genoese merchants maintained a large presence at the port, which served as an important stopover for both Atlantic and regional trade ships. Christian forces seized Malaga on August 18, 1487 after a 3-month 11 days siege on the city, which was part of the Granada War. Muslim war captives were sold into slavery and the Jewish population was held for ransom. Merchant Alí Dordux, along with 50 others, were the only people allowed to remain in the city. The remaining Muslims converted to Catholic Christianity and the city was quickly inhabited by Christian settlers from various Iberian Peninsula locales. Under the Crown of Castile, the city endured a series of typhus fever outbreaks. Fourteen years after a revolt against the Admiral of Castile following Ferdinand II’s death, Malaga freed itself from Admiralty control on December 2, 1530. At that time, prior privileges granted by the Catholic Monarchs were restored. By 1625, the city’s population reached approximately 36,000. The (first) August 24, 1704 Battle of Málaga between an Anglo-Dutch fleet and a Franco-Spanish naval force, the War of the Spanish Succession’s largest naval battle, proved largely inconclusive, albeit with the Franco-Spanish side suffering just over twice the casualties at 1,500 killed. The 19th century saw both industrialization and a steady increase in population, along with economic turmoil by way of the grape phylloxera (grapevine insect pests). The Second Republic retained control of Malaga following the Spanish coup of July 1936, with the Republican navy based at the city’s harbor at the onset of the Spanish Civil War. Shortly thereafter, nationalist-sided Italian warships began bombarding the harbor. The second historical Battle of Malaga (February 3-8, 1937) between the Spanish Republic and Nationalist Spain (supported by Fascist Italian Corps of Volunteer Troops and Nazi Germany) resulted in a Nationalist, Francisco Franco victory. Following World War II, Franco continued to rule Spain until his death in late-1975. Three years later, Spain became a constitutional monarchy.

Home to nearly 600,000 “Malagueños”, Malaga is the Province of Malaga’s capital and an Andalusian autonomous community. In terms of economic activity, Malaga ranks as a top-four Spanish city behind Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Major business sectors are tourism, technology and construction. Andalusia’s largest bank, Unicaja is based in the city. Malaga welcomes around 6 million visitors annually. Spain’s oldest airport still in operation, Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport handles nearly 13 million passengers annually. Of the city’s 27 high-rise buildings, 2 of the tallest are AQ Urban Sky (365 feet) and Malaga Cathedral north tower (305 feet), while Torre del Puerto de Málaga (473 feet) is a planned luxury hotel skyscraper. The city’s dominant religion is Roman Catholicism. Home to a subtropical-Mediterranean climate, Malaga experiences mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, dry summers, along with about 300 days of sunshine per year. August summer highs average around 87 °F, while January winters stay around 62 °F. Additional points of interest are Anglican Cemetery of St. George (mainland Spain’s oldest non-Roman Catholic Christian cemetery), Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista (16th-century historical edifice) and University of Málaga (UMA). Local foods include paella (Spanish rice dish), fritura Malagueña (fried fish), espeto (skewered meat), boquerones (anchovies), patatas alioli (potatoes), porra antequerana (tomato soup), gazpachuelo Malagueño (soup with egg whites), ensalada malagueña (vegan salad), almendras fritas (fried almonds) and churros. Popular drinks are sangria, wine and coffee. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Malaga accommodations that will help make for a memorable experience.

Barcelona has its own language known as Catalan. Spanish is also widely spoken, while English is understood moderately. In Barcelona, be sure not to disturb the siesta, or afternoon nap. Dinnertime is typically between 9-11:30 pm, with clubs often remaining open until 5-6 am. Barcelona is known to get crowded in summertime. On Barcelona Beach, always keep an eye on your personal belongings. Do not buy drinks from anyone on the beach, and be mindful not to step on any sea urchins. About 180 free public WiFi hotspots are found throughout the city, with WiFi access extending to beach areas. On Sundays, many shops shut down in Barna. Generally, the city’s inhabitants are friendly, but it’s entirely possible to run into some who are unwelcoming to tourists. Barcelona accommodations are some of Spain’s best. Before we get to Barcelona accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Although Barcelona’s pre-history is largely unknown, tombs and dwellings have been discovered that date to pre-5000 BC. At the foot of Montjuïc hill 3rd century BC coins, along with an Iberian script referencing the name Bárkeno, have been found. Two legends point to either mythological Hercules or Carthaginian General Hamilcar Barca (Hannibal’s father) as being the city’s founder. The latter legendary story is more probable, though neither have been proven. Around 15 BC, the Romans established a military camp in the area and set up The Roman Forum near present-day Plaça de Sant Jaume (administrative center). In the early 5th century the city was conquered by Germanic Visigoths, who subsequently were overrun by the Middle Eastern Umayyad Caliphate (early 8th century). Louis the Pious, King of the Franks and Charlemagne’s son, conquered the city from the Umayyad Caliphate following his Carolingian army’s 801 AD siege of Barcelona. Control of the city changed hands several times near the start of Anno Domini. Following Barcelona’s sacking, and most of the city’s population either being killed or enslaved, by Muslim Arab Andalusi military leader Almanzor in 985, a dynastic union formed between Aragon and the County of Barcelona circa 1137. The marriage of Ramon Berenguer IV and Petronilla of Aragon bore Alfonso II of Aragon, whose territories would develop into the Crown of Aragon (13th-17th centuries). At the height of its power, the Crown of Aragon controlled eastern Spain, parts of southern France, the Balearic Islands, Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, Malta and parts of Greece. Up until the 15th century, Barcelona was the leading slave trade center of the Crown of Aragon. Likely Europe’s oldest central bank, arising from necessities of the state, the Taula de canvi de Barcelona was established in 1401. Aragon and Castille’s royal lines were united in 1469 with the marriage of Ferdinand II and Isabella I. America’s colonization reduced the financial importance of Mediterranean trade, and Madrid became the center of Spain’s political power around that time. Reapers’ War, or the Catalan Revolt, occurring in Catalonia from 1640-1659 between The Principality of Catalonia and Habsburg Spain, resulted in a Catalan defeat along with the Treaty of the Pyrenees, a part of which saw Spain ceding Northern Catalonia to France. During the War of Spanish Succession, the 1705 siege of Barcelona between Pro-Bourbon Spain and England, the Dutch Republic and Pro-Habsburg Spain resulted in Pro-Bourbon Spain’s entire garrison being captured.  Montjuïc Castle, which had established out of a fortress in 1694, was captured by the British during the 1705 siege. Again during the Napoleonic Wars, the castle was captured, this time by the French Army but without a shot ever being fired, as the troops guarding the castle were ordered not to fight the French.  Following the Napoleonic Wars, industrialization aided Barcelona, though the city also struggled with population density and the accompanying diseases. Urban planner and civil engineer Ildefons Cerdà, considered the founder of modern town planning as a discipline, proposed a solution to the city’s population density problem, a new district called Eixample. Although not entirely realized, Eixample would prove a fine example, as it resulted in the demolition of the city walls, along with an expansive implementation of a street grid, wide streets to allow clean air, gardens at the center of each street block, smooth-flowing traffic and broader sunlight. Octagonal superblocks with chamfered corners for better visibility remain helpful to this day.  Following Catalonia’s resistance to Francisco Franco’s Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War, and as a result of a Nationalist victory, Catalonian autonomous institutions were abolished and the use of the Catalonian language in public was suppressed. Under Francoist Spain from 1939 to 1975, Barcelona remained Spain’s second largest city and saw both industrialization and prosperity, with an influx of workers from Spain’s poorer regions contributing to rapid urbanization. Barcelona’s hosting of the 1992 Summer Olympics provided the city with an economic jolt. Also, the 1992 Olympics was cause for the demolition of industrial buildings along the sea-front, and a replacement with 2 miles of beach. Barcelona Beach, naturally, would boost tourism going forward.

Spain’s second-most populous city behind Madrid, Barcelona is positioned between the mouths of the Llobregat and Besòs rivers. Home to over 1.6 million “Barcelonans” (native Barcelonans are known as “Catalans”), Barcelona ranks in the European Union’s top-5 cities in terms of gross GDP. One of the Mediterranean Sea’s largest metropolises, Barca harbors the Port of Barcelona, which is Europe’s busiest passenger port. Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Carnival Cruises are a few examples of cruise lines that operate through the Port of Barcelona. 5.5 million international visitors traveled to Barcelona in 2011 compared to 12.4 million in 2022.  Home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Barca boasts some of the world’s most amazing spectacles by way of Catalan modernista architecture. Architect of Barcelona’s most incredible art nouveau and modernista buildings, Antoni Gaudí lived in Barcelona from 1868 until his death in 1926 aged 73. The University of Barcelona, one of Spain’s oldest universities, was established in 1450. About sixty parks and seven beaches can be experienced throughout the city. Barcelona summers are warm/hot and average in the high 70s degrees Fahrenheit, while winters are mild at around 53 degrees. Rain occurs only about 78 days per year. Additional points of interest include Palau de la Música Catalana (concert hall), Gran Teatre del Liceu (performing arts theater), Palau Nacional (art museum), Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya (historic palace / government center), Torre Glòries (business center), World Trade Center Barcelona, Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor (Catholic church), Venetian Towers (monument), La Rambla (street), La Barceloneta (neighborhood), Port Olimpic (marina) and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (racecourse). Local foods include  Canelons (a type of lasagna), Escudella i Carn d’Olla (meat and vegetable stew), Fricandó (beef stew with mushrooms), Faves a la Catalana (fava bean dish), Ànec amb peres (duck with pears), Pa amb Tomàque (bread with tomato) and Patatas Bravas (quartered potatoes and paella). Popular drinks are Cava (sparkling white wine), Vermouth, Sangria, Leche de Pantera (condensed milk, gin and water) and beer. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Barcelona accommodations that are sure to inspire excitement.
