Hotels in Amsterdam

Hotels in Amsterdam Netherlands

Hotels in Amsterdam offer wonderful accommodations in a destination nicknamed “Venice of the North”. Known for its museums, art galleries, artistic heritage, canals, narrow canal houses, wind mills, night clubs, festivals, cannabis coffee houses and sex shops, Amsterdam is located in northern Netherlands, about 40 miles northeast of The Hague. Across The North Sea from England by way of the man-made North Sea Canal, or Noordzeekanaal, Amsterdam’s waterfront is known as The IJ. Flowing through Amsterdam, the Amstel is a North Holland province river that begins just north of the village Nieuwveen and ultimately flows into a former bay just past Stationseiland, an artificial island and site of Amsterdam Centraal Station. Venice of the North’s main attractions include Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Vondelpark, ARTIS, NEMO Science Museum, Royal Palace Amsterdam, BODY WORLDS Amsterdam, The Amsterdam Dungeon, Rembrandt House Museum, De 9 Straatjes, Begijnhof, Hortus Botanicus, Maritime Museum, Brouwerij ‘t IJ, Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge), WONDR Experience, Eye Film Museum, NDSM and AMAZE Amsterdam. A Champion’s League-caliber football club, AFC Ajax plays at Johan Cruijff ArenA on the city’s southeast side. When visiting Amsterdam, keep in mind that there may be many cyclists on the road. Generally, people are friendly, though make sure to secure your personal belongings, especially in public places. Do not smoke cannabis in public, speak while chewing gum, leave the table unnecessarily during dinner or walk in bicycle paths. Currency is the Euro, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. In addition to magic truffles, legal, of course, is also prostitution. De Wallen, Amsterdam’s best-known and largest Red-light district, is at medieval city center. Neon-lit, crossed by canals and narrow alleys and lined with bars, De Wallen is worthy of at least a daytime stroll-through. Keep in mind, when visiting the Red-light district, that you should not take pictures of sex workers. Lingering, especially in front of brothel windows, is not advisable. Also, drinking or smoking cannabis on the street is prohibited. Amsterdam top events include Light Festival, Tulip Festival, Chinese New Year, Christmas Markets, Amsterdam Coffee Festival, Mystic Garden, Amsterdam Music Festival, The DGTL Festival, Music On Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event, Dekmental, DLDK: Don’t Let Daddy Know, Terschelling Oerol Theatre Festival, Mysteryland (Haarlemmermeer) and Awakenings Festival (Hilvarenbeek). Hotels in Amsterdam are some of northern Europe’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Amsterdam, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Farmers, living alongside the prehistoric IJ River, inhabited the Amsterdam area probably as early as 1000 BC. Discovered in prehistoric Amstel river bedding beneath Amsterdam’s Damrak and Rokin areas, Neolithic and Roman artifacts (Beaker culture pottery & a granite grinding stone) date to as early as 2750 BC. In 1170 AD, the All Saints’ Flood, a catastrophic flood that overflowed large parts of Northern Netherlands and Holland territories, marked the beginnings of Amsterdam, whereby the area gained an open connection to the sea. Called Amestelle, a dam on the Amstel River is attributed to Amsterdam’s founding. Naturally, the 1170 AD catastrophic flooding event shifted production from farming to trade. During the Middle Ages, Amsterdam became a popular pilgrimage destination during the Protestant Reformation. Due largely to trade with the Hanseatic League, a medieval network of merchant guilds and market towns, Amsterdam began to flourish in the 14th century. An independent, Dutch, Baltic Sea trade route for grain and timber, established in the 15th century, cut out the Hanseatic League as middlemen. Around this time, innovations in the herring fishery, along with a capacity for bulk cargo, proved prosperous for the city, as demand for herring stretched across Europe. In 1415, the inventions of on-board gibbing (the process of preparing salt herring) and the haringbuis (a seagoing fishing vessel) gave the Dutch a monopoly on the herring industry. The saying “Amsterdam is built on Herring bones” derives from the city’s transcontinental herring trade system, which was established at the onset of the Dutch Golden Age. The Spanish monarchy, through a Hapsburg inheritance, took control of The Low Countries (Netherlands) in the later 16th century. New taxes, along with religious persecution of Protestants, led to the Eighty Years’ War, or Dutch Revolt, which resulted in Dutch independence from Spain. Iberian Peninsula Jews, French Protestant Huguenots and prosperous merchants and printers from Flanders, escaping pro-Catholic Spanish religious inquisition, found refuge in Amsterdam. The Dutch Golden Age revived and reached its peak during the 17th century, when Amsterdam became the Western world’s wealthiest city. The Dutch East & West India Companies, spanning almost the entire world, acquired vast overseas possessions, which led to the establishment of the Dutch colonial empire. Trading in its own shares, Amsterdam’s Dutch East India office became the world’s first stock exchange circa 1602, and the Bank of Amsterdam, established in 1609, served as a full-service bank and reserve bank for Dutch merchant bankers. Beginning in the 17th century, Amsterdam became involved in the Atlantic slave trade, with the city being a major destination port for Dutch slave ships. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, as a result of the Dutch Republic’s wars with England and France and the Napoleonic Wars, a once prosperous Amsterdam declined to its lowest point, with Holland being absorbed into the French Empire. In 1815, however, the establishment of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands led to what might be considered Amsterdam’s second Golden Age, when museums, railway systems and a concert hall were constructed. Around this time, the Amsterdam–Rhine and North Sea canals were dug, providing Amsterdam with unprecedented nautical access to mainland Europe, as well as Belgium, France, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. During the First World War, food shortages became a problem, but expansion continued between the First and Second World Wars. On May 10, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded and took control of the Netherlands. Anne Frank became the most famous of Amsterdam’s Jewish deportees during the Second World War. Amsterdam’s food and fuel supplies were dangerously scarce toward the end of the Second World War, with raw sugar beets, tulip bulbs and even cats and dogs being cooked to a pulp and consumed for survival. Canadian forces liberated Amsterdam on May 5, 1945. Of course, the city gradually revived following the World Wars. More recently, Amsterdam’s number of annual visitors rose from 10 million in 2012, to 17 million in 2015.

The Netherlands’ capital and most populous municipality, Amsterdam today is home to around 850,000 “Amsterdammers”. Over 60 miles of canals, 1,500 bridges and nearly 90 islands are all reminiscent of the flooding that occurred many centuries past. Also characteristic of Venice of the North are its houseboats. Historically prosperous and presently an alpha world city, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s top financial centers, with companies such as Uber, Netflix and Tesla basing their European headquarters there. Schiphol Airport is the Netherlands’ busiest airport, as well as Europe’s third busiest. Besides walking, biking or renting a vehicle, the best ways to get around the city are via the Amsterdam tram or Uber rideshare. As one might imagine, there are also many outstanding boating experiences to be had as well. The city’s waterways and lights were likely great inspirations for two of Amsterdam’s more famous residents, Rembrandt and Vincent Van Gogh. During the 1970s, cannabis coffee shops, which continue to thrive to this day, started appearing. Summertime in Venice of the North can be quite pleasant, with August highs averaging around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, while the cooler months between October and March are typically cloudy and damp.  Additional points of interest include Royal Concertgebouw, Keizersgracht canal, Reguliersgracht canal, Oude Krek, Euronext Amsterdam, Dam Square, Westerkerk, Grachtengordel, Zuidas, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Rembrandtplein, Stadsschouwburg, Royal Theater Carré, Paradiso, H’ART Museum, Amsterdam Centraal Station and University of AmsterdamLocal foods are Stroopwafel (wafer cookie), Dutch pancakes (thinner, crepe-like pancakes topped with fruit), herring, cod, Gouda cheese, Kibbeling (battered fish), Oliebol (fried dough), Stamppot (mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables) and Rijsttafel (an Indonesian-inspired array of small plates). Drinks include Jenever (a juniper-flavored liquor), vodka, Advocaat (a thicker, brandy-infused custard, like eggnog) and lager beer. With a little background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Amsterdam that will help make for an exciting adventure.
