Istanbul Turkey Hotels

Hotels in Istanbul offer some of the best Middle East accommodations in a locale nicknamed The City on Seven Hills. Known for its squares, its bazaars, its boutiques, its mosques, its museums and its palaces, Istanbul was known also historically as Byzantium and Constantinople. While Ankara officially is Turkey’s capital, Istanbul is considered the country’s cultural, economic and historical epicenter. With an exciting mix of Asian, Middle Eastern and European culture, its easy to see why Istanbul is one of the most traveled destinations in the world. When traveling to Istanbul, its best to stay away from street meats and partake more so in restaurants such as the ones found below. Also, keep in mind that females must cover their hair if visiting a mosque. Truly, The City on Seven Hills can be an exciting place for which to plan a trip. Before we get to hotels in Istanbul, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Renamed Constantinople in 330 AD by one of the greatest Roman military rulers, Constantine the Great, eventual Istanbul remained the capital of the eastern Roman Empire for more than a thousand years. In 1453, the city fell to Sultan Mehmed II “the Conqueror” and the Ottoman Empire. Strategically situated between the Black and Mediterranean seas, Istanbul was a prominent trade center on the historic Silk Road trade route. The city controlled rail networks to Europe and to the Middle East. Long-standing, historical culture-clashes can be evidenced to this day, in buildings such as the Hagia Sophia. Built as a Greek Orthodox church in 537 AD, and then captured and turned into an imperial Ottoman mosque in 1453, the Hagia Sophia has since operated as a museum, in which are displayed various potteries and mosaics, with the intention of returning the building back into a mosque.  Probably the greatest cause for Istanbul’s metropolitanism stems from the 1970s, when migrants found employment in the many new factories surrounding the city.

Dating back to the 7th century BC, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, with a population estimated at around 15 million people. Historically also known as  Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul today hosts nearly 13 million tourists each year, mostly on the city’s European side, where 90 percent of its hotels are located. Travelers enjoy Istanbul’s museums, bazaars, shopping districts, nightlife, sports and climate. Summer high temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter average highs stay at around 43 degrees. One of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, the Grand Bazaar occupies over 7.5 square acres of the city and attracts up to 400,000 visitors per day. Istanbul’s major spice market since 1660, the Egyptian Bazaar is the place for spices, as well as things like Turkish delight, dried fruit, souvenirs and more. Some of Turkey’s oldest sports clubs, such as Beşiktaş JK, are based in the city. Other major points of interest include Beyoğluİstanbul ModernPera MuseumSakıp Sabancı MuseumSantralIstanbulIstanbul Archaeology MuseumsTurkish and Islamic Arts MuseumYıldız Palace,  İstiklal AvenueMahmutpasha Bazaar, Galleria AtaköyAkmerkezIstanbul CevahirKumkapıİstiklal AvenueÇiçek PasajıNişantaşıOrtaköyBebekKadıköy,  Atatürk Olympic StadiumŞükrü Saracoğlu StadiumTürk Telekom ArenaAli Sami Yen StadiumVodafone Arena and Sinan Erdem Dome.  Istanbul’s cuisine is largely seafood based, as evidenced in places such as Kumkapı, where around fifty seafood restaurants are located, and Princes’ Islands, located 9 miles off the coast from city center. Traditional food items include Meze, which are types of appetizers, Kebabs, Manti, a type of dumpling, Menemen, a scrambled egg dish and Kanafeh, which is a noodle-like pastry dessert. One of the most popular alcoholic drinks is called Rakı, a potent, sweetened, anise-flavored spirit made from grape pomace, while a non-alcoholic, refreshing drink is called Ayran, made using yogurt. With a little background information on the city, we are now ready to explore some of the best hotels in Istanbul.
