Bucharest accommodations
Bucharest accommodations welcome you to a destination nicknamed “Paris of the East” and “City of Joy”. Known for its shopping malls, museums, concert halls, opera houses, theaters, Orthodox churches, monasteries, historic / grand municipal buildings, Art Nouveau architecture, French designs, narrow cobbled streets, courts (heritage sites), pătrate (squares), parcuri (parks), grădini (gardens), arboretums (botanical gardens used for scientific study), markets, street food and electronic dance music (EDM) nightclubs, Bucharest is located in southern Romania, about 60 miles from Bulgaria (southerly) and a little over 300 miles from Ukraine and Moldova (northeasterly). Once occupied by Vlad III, aka Vlad the Impaler, Bucharest is separated into 6 “sectors”. Passing through Bucharest, the Dâmbovița river flows into the river Argeș, which is a tributary of the Danube. Circumnavigating the city is the fully operational Centura București (Bucharest Beltway) ring road, while the partially-built Bucharest Ring Motorway (under construction) is intended to be the city’s second, outer ring road. Bucharest main points of interest include AFI Cotroceni (shopping mall), ParkLake Shopping Center (shopping mall), Băneasa Shopping City (shopping mall), Cismigiu Gardens (English-style park – lake, rose garden, pavilion), Mega Mall (shopping mall), Tineretului Park (lake, sports complex, kids’ area, cycling trails), Alexandru Ioan Cuza Park (lake, 5 small islands, church, sports facilities, playgrounds), Sun Plaza (shopping mall), Children’s Town Bucharest (amusement park), Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History (Black Sea & Atlantic wildlife dioramas, humpback whale skeleton), The National Arena (stadium), Bucharest Mall (shopping mall), Carol I Park (scenic park – lake, French garden, mausoleum, monuments, est. 1906), Arcul de Triumf (monument – high granite arch, internal stairs, city views, built in memory of WWI troops), The Romanian Athenaeum (neoclassical concert hall – opened 1888), Orhideea (shopping mall), Militari Shopping (shopping mall), Plaza Romania (shopping mall), Bucharest Fountains (spring-fall dancing water displays – music, lights, 3D projections), National Village Museum (“Dimitrie Gusti” – ethnographic museum), “Children’s World” Park (amusement park recreation area – playgrounds, flower-lined paths, BBQ pits), Circus’ Park (scenic park – lake, vegetation, walking paths, playground), Cocoșu Roșu (Romanian restaurant), La Ciotoianu Grill (restaurant), Casa Ceaușescu (former Romanian president residence – gardens, built 1964), National Museum of Romanian History, Palace of Parliament (parliament building / conference center – ornate interior), Ivan`s Bar & Grill (restaurant), “Văcărești” Natural Park (protected lake land – walking paths, marsh harriers, moorhens, coots), Steaua Stadium, Titanii Park (fountains, children’s play equipment), The National Military Museum (expansive weaponry – swords, firearms, fortification / transport models), and “Cotroceni” National Museum (Romanian president residence – medieval church, lush grounds). Beyond Centura București, attractions include Therme Bucharest (Europe’s largest urban beach, mineral pools, saunas, waterslides, indoor botanical garden), Palatul Mogoșoaia (1700s palace – art museum, restaurant, picnic areas), Mogoșoaia Park, La Nuci (restaurant), Comana Natural Park (nature preserve / river delta – hiking, boardwalk birdwatching, guided boat tours), “Cernica” Monastery (lakeside sanctuary – frescoed church, cemetery, founded 1608), Snagov Forest (nature preserve – lake, wooded biking trails, lakeside picnic spots, kids’ adventure park), Amckart (amusement center), The Dendrological Park (arboretum), Taverna Studioului (restaurant), Bokaa (event venue), TreeHouse Cosoba (country club), Rustic Pub Grădiștea (restaurant / pub), By The Lake (event venue) and BOHO Forest (event venue). Bucharest’s main airport is Henri Coandă International Airport, while its rapid transit subway system is Bucharest Metro. Good to know is that Uber rideshare does operate in Bucharest, with service to include the airport. Airport car rental agencies include Klass Wagen, PriceCarZ, Duo Rent a Car, CarHunt, Unirent, Autorom Rent a Car, Trio Rent a Car, WLC Rent A Car, ZoomRent and Autonom Otopeni. Keep in mind that an electronic vignette is required at Romanian toll stations. While most car rental agencies will have valid electronic vignettes already assigned to their respective vehicles, it might be best to double check with the agency upon pick-up. While at the airport, especially if you have some time to kill, Ion Tiriac’s “Țiriac Collection” Auto Gallery is worth a visit. Bucharest’s top football club is FCSB, which plays at Arena Națională (The National Arena) on the city’s east side. Although English is widely spoken in Bucharest, especially in the service industry and with the younger crowd, learning some Romanian words / phrases of course would be helpful. Buna ziua (hello), la revedere (goodbye), mulțumesc (thank you) and vorbiți engleză (do you speak English?) are good places to start. Compared to other European capital cities, Bucharest is relatively inexpensive. When in Bucharest, keep in mind that it’s possible to see stray dogs, which are best avoided. Crime is generally low, though beggars do exist who are typically Roma people, sometimes referred to as “gypsies”. Apart from begging, pickpocketing is known to occur. In Bucharest restaurants and bars, tips are greatly appreciated. Bucharest currency is the Romanian Lei, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Paris of the East top events include Bucharest International Film Festival, George Enescu International Festival, Bucharest Christmas Market (Parliament Palace – Constitutiei Square), Summer Well Festival, Bucharest Jazz Festival, BalKaniK Festival, B-FIT in the Street, Bucharest Early Music Festival, Summer in the City (music festival), Old Grave Fest (metal music festival), International Folklore Festival, Bucharest Marathon, Bucharest Street Food Festival and Bucharest Summit. Bucharest accommodations are some of Southeastern Europe’s best. Before we get to Bucharest accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
The Romanian name Bucharesti’s origin is unclear. Possibly the name derived from a shepherd named Bucar, who, according to legend, founded the city. Bucurie in Romanian means “joy”. Historically, Bucharest was located in an area of present-day Romania known as Wallachia (1290 AD – 1859 AD). Bucharest was first mentioned in 1459 as the “Citadel of Bucharest”. Voivode of Wallachia, Vlad III “the Impaler” occupied Bucharest in November 1476, forcing the Ottoman-backed ruler there, Basarab Laiotă, to seek refuge in the Ottoman Empire. A month later, Vlad the Impaler was killed near Snagov (25 miles north of Bucharest), though the circumstances surrounding his death, and burial, are uncertain. Different theories exist. Vlad’s army of about 2,000 may have been cornered and massacred by about 4,000 Turkish-Basarabs. Vlad may have been slain by a disguised Turkish assassin in his own camp, or by his own troops who mistook him for a Turk in battle. Vlad’s body was likely dismembered, with his head placed on a high spike for display in Constantinople. Tradition states that the remnants of Vlad’s corpse were discovered in Snagov marshes by monks from the nearby monastery. Although Vlad’s exact burial location is unknown, theories point to either Snagov Monastery or Comana Monastery. Regardless of the uncertainty surrounding his death, Vlad III is remembered most famously through the character Dracula. During Vlad’s second reign, Old Princely Court (Curtea Veche) was erected in present-day central Bucharest. After Vlad’s demise, Bucharest became a summer residence for the royal court. Bucharest became the Wallachian court’s permanent location in 1699 on account of the town’s proximity to Southern Muntenia, and through demands made by the suzerain (Ottomans). Greek administrators and members of prominent families, Phanariotes were appointed by the Ottomans to run the town during the 18th century. The Constantinople Greeks’ rule, however, came to an end by way of the 1821 Wallachian uprising. Beginning a few years after the uprising, Bucharest was placed under Russian, and then Austrian, control. In early-1847, about a third of the city was destroyed by fire. Wallachia and Moldavia united in 1862 to form the Principality of Romania, with Bucharest becoming the new nation’s capital. 19 years later, the Kingdom of Romania was established. Today’s ring road route was once occupied by 19th-century fortifications that encircled the city. Following the World War I Battle of Bucharest, Germans occupied the city, and the capital was temporarily moved to Iași (Jassy). Bucharest reclaimed its capital status during the interwar period of Greater Romania. During this time, iconic landmarks were built such as Arcul de Triumf and Palatul Telefoanelor, though further urban developments were hampered by the Great Depression in Romania and the Grivița Strike of 1933. Romania initially allied with Axis powers during World War II, and Bucharest was the site of a 1941 Legionnaires’ rebellion and pogrom. Early in the war, Bucharest took heavy damage from Allied bombings. However, Romania switched sides to join Allied forces after an August 1944 royal coup (King Michael). Subsequently, Bucharest was bombed by the Nazi Luftwaffe, though the city suppressed an additional German attempt to regain the city. Following World War II, communism was installed in Romania by way of the Socialist Republic of Romania (1947-1989). The Soviet Union considered Romania a conquered territory on account of its early allegiance to the Nazis. The Romanian Parliament abolished the monarchy on December 30, 1947 and declared Romania a “People’s Republic”. The following year, the Communists merged with the Social Democrats to form the Romanian Workers’ Party. The constitution of April 13,1948, mimicking the 1936 Soviet Constitution, solidified a communist regime in Romania. Under communism, Romania endured political repression. Marxist–Leninist atheism was promoted, while religious persecution was carried out. Church properties, including schools, and all banks were nationalized in 1948. Due to Nicolae Ceaușescu’s late-1960s nativist policies, illegal abortions led to orphanages, street children and overcrowding in homes and schools. During this time, invasions of privacy were carried out by the secret police (Securitate), and censorship was implemented. Antii-Ceaușescu protests prompted the Romanian Revolution of 1989, which led to the overthrow of the Communist regime, and student leagues’ organizing of anti-Communist rallies in early-1990. From there, modernization ensued to include the restoration of Bucharest’s old historic center.
Home to around 1.9 million “Bucharesters”, Bucharest is Romania’s capital and largest city. 9% of Romania’s population resides in Bucharest. Industry and service sectors help drive the city’s economy, with most of Romania’s large companies based in Paris of the East. The Bucharest Stock Exchange lists 83 companies and has a market capitalization of around $75 billion. 100 high-rise buildings make up the city’s skyline, with 6 skyscrapers exceeding 328 feet in height. Characterized by a humid continental climate, Bucharest experiences hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. July high temperatures average around 87 °F, while January highs dip to around 37 °F. Bucharest’s 6 sectors are disposed radially so that each district has a part of city center. District 1 comprises the northwest, while subsequent districts continue clockwise, ending at westward district 6. Additional points of interest include Palace of the Parliament, Old Town, Lipscani district (Old Town Middle Ages / 19th century commercial area – restaurants, bars, nightlife), Calea Victoriei (central avenue), Victoriei Avenue (central boulevard – architecture, luxury shops, cultural landmarks), Unirii Boulevard (central thoroughfare), Magheru Boulevard (central street – shopping district), Unirii Square, National Museum of Art of Romania, Odeon Theatre, Palace of the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate (Palatul Patriarhiei), Palace of Justice, National Library of Romania, Cărturești Carusel Bookstore, SkyTower (Romania’s tallest building – shopping mall, entertainment, retail offices), Unirea Shopping Center, Herăstrău Park, University of Bucharest and Romexpo Dome. Local foods include sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), mititei (sausages), smoked meats, meat pies, potato soup, bean soup, cheeses (Telemea, Brânză de Burduf, Branza lui Voda), murături (pickles), covrigi (pretzels) and turta dulce (gingerbread). Romania’s national drink is ţuică (potent moonshine – distilled from plums), while palinca (strong fruit brandy), craft beer and wine are also popular. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Bucharest accommodations that will help make for a memorable experience.
