Sin City hot spots are Las Vegas Boulevard (“The Strip” – modern hotels, casinos, entertainment) and Fremont Street (city’s original location – vintage entertainment). Fremont Street is a short drive northward from The Strip. A major sports town of late, the city’s professional sports teams are the Las Vegas Raiders, the Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Aces. Vegas has hosted the World Series of Poker for the last 55 years. On The Strip especially, keep in mind that rideshare vehicles and taxis have designated drop-off / pickup areas (usually in front of the hotel / casino). While scorpions generally are uncommon in entertainment areas, they can be found in residential areas and are locally called “bugs”. Las Vegas accommodations are some of the southwestern United States’ best. Before we get to Las Vegas accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
Las Vegas is a relatively young city. Human presence in the area, however, dates back roughly 10,000 years, as evidenced by Paleo-Indian petroglyphs found at Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. About 2,000 years ago, Ancient Puebloan and Paiute tribes inhabited the area. The first non-Native American to behold the Las Vegas Valley is believed to be Rafael Rivera, a Mexican scout who in 1829 took part in Spanish explorer Antonio Armijo’s Spanish Trail expedition. With a 60-man party, Armijo set out from Nuevo Mexico along the Spanish Trail, intended for Los Angeles. During the Spanish Party expedition, a scouting party rode west in search of water. An inexperienced Rivera left the main party and, within two weeks, discovered an artesian spring water supply at Las Vegas Springs, a natural, bubbling oasis (cienega). United States Army officer, explorer and politician John C. Frémont, about 14 years after Rivera’s discovery, led an expedition west. On May 13, 1844 Fremont camped at Las Vegas Springs,, and his writings therein eventually attracted pioneers to the area. 11 years after Fremont, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members chose the Las Vegas Springs area, which was about halfway between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, to build a fort. Known as Old Mormon Fort, the area’s first permanent structure was abandoned several years later, though remnants of which are still standing at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue. Built in New Mexico folk carpenter architectural style, Old Mormon Fort served to facilitate travel along the Spanish Trail. 50 years after the Old Mormon Fort was constructed, Las Vegas was founded as a city circa 1905. 110 acres of land adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks (modern downtown area) were auctioned. Hotel Nevada opened at 1 Fremont Street on January 13, 1906. 5 years later, Las Vegas was incorporated as a city. By 1931, Nevada had legalized casino gambling and reduced residency requirements for divorce to 6 weeks. Around this time, Hoover Dam tunnels began construction, which naturally assuaged economic hardship during the Great Depression, and presented mobsters with an opportunity to offer illicit activities to construction workers. On March 1, 1936, 2 years ahead of schedule, the Hoover Dam was officially completed. Established in late-1941, Las Vegas Army Airfield was ultimately renamed Nellis Air Force Base circa 1950. Nellis Air Force Base’s inauguration was attended by United States fighter pilot William Harrell Nellis’ family. Lieutenant Nellis flew 70 World War II combat missions and was shot down 3 times, the last time fatally. Hotels, casinos and entertainment largely were ushered in post-World War II. In May 1946, Bugsy Siegel took control of the Flamingo hotel, which opened unfinished on December 26, 1946. 65 miles northward of Las Vegas, the Nevada Test Site began nuclear weapons testing in 1951. Las Vegas “Atomic City” residents and visitors could actually witness mushroom clouds in the distance, and were exposed to fallout until 1963. The 1963 Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapon Tests in the Atmosphere, in Outer Space and Under Water brought an end to an era of Las Vegas-area mushroom clouds. Tycoons such as Howard Hughes started buying and building hotel-casino properties during the 1960s, and the term gambling was rebranded as “gaming”. Anthony Spilotro moved to Las Vegas in 1971 to help oversee the Chicago Outfit’s four casinos at the time, the Stardust, the Fremont, the Hacienda and the Marina. In 1995, the Fremont Street Experience opened in downtown. Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena opened on April 6, 2016, followed by Allegiant Stadium on July 31, 2020.
Nevada’s largest city, Las Vegas is home to around 700,000 ” Las Vegans” (not all vegans). Once ran by Jewish and Italian mobsters such as Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and Anthony Spilotro, Sin City has been reshaped significantly since its early days. The Vegas of today is much more than just a gambling town and, as its nickname implies, place of ill-repute. Performing arts, professional sporting events, concerts, conventions, trade shows, exhibitions, museums, recreational activities, fine dining, upscale shopping, immersive experiences and more have all been introduced to a reimagined Las Vegas. A top-three USA destination for conventions, the city is home to the aforementioned Las Vegas Convention Center, or “LVCC”, which ranks as the United States’ third-largest convention center at 2,500,000 square feet. In 2023, 40.8 million people visited Vegas. Home to a hot desert climate, Las Vegas experiences extreme summer heat, short winters and cool nights. On average, 310 days per year are sunny. During peak summertime, the sun can damage parked cars’ steering wheels and heat asphalt parking lot surfaces to 160°F or more, which technically is hot enough to cook an egg (not recommended). The desert climate does offer a positive, however, in that it lacks humidity. Additional points of interest include The STRAT Tower, Golden Nugget Tank Pool, Las Vegas Springs Preserve, Las Vegas Arts District, Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Symphony Park (mixed-use district) and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Las Vegas restaurants and buffets are plentiful. A range of foods includes prime rib, shrimp cocktails, Chilean sea bass, Maine lobster rolls, cannoli, chicken and waffles and much more. Casino-themed alcoholic beverages are popular in Vegas. Drinks typically are free for gamblers on the casino floors. Tipping cocktail waitresses with casino chips is common practice. Keep in mind, however, that tipping with casino chips technically goes against Nevada gaming regulations, and could be considered a violation of federal mint laws, though enforcement is rare. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Las Vegas accommodations that will help make for an incredible experience.
