Berlin Accommodations
Berlin accommodations welcome you to a destination nicknamed “Grey City”. Known for its museums, theaters, architecture, plazas, squares, parks, restaurants, beer gardens, shopping malls, nightclubs, fashion and chocolate, Berlin is located in northeastern Germany, about 180 miles southeast of Germany’s second-largest city, Hamburg. Ultimately flowing through central Berlin, the Spree River starts in the Lusatian Highlands, forms the Spree Forest (large inland delta – about 60 miles southeast), and proceeds through Lake Schwielochsee before entering the city. Not coincidently, Berlin tourist spots are found mostly in the city’s central and western sections.

When in Berlin, keep in mind that dress code policies can actually vary amongst districts. Berlin’s currency is the Euro, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Berlin accommodations are some of Germany’s best. Before we get to Berlin accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
Human settlements are estimated to have existed in the Berlin-area since around 60,000 BC, with a deer mask being discovered that dates to around 9,000 BC. From 2,000 BC to the 7th century, it is thought, respectively, that the area had been inhabited by the Lusatian culture, Germanic tribes, Semnones, Burgundians, Hevelli and Sprevane. As part of the Holy Roman Empire’s Margraviate of Brandenburg (1157AD-1806), the region came under German rule starting in the 12th century. Albert the Bear founded Brandenburg circa 1157. In Berlin Mitte, remnants of a 1280 AD house foundation have been excavated, with Berlin itself thought to have been founded in 1237. The area’s two main trade routes, the Holy Roman Empire’s Via Imperii along with an eastern-reaching route from Bruges to Novgorod, contributed to the city’s “staple right”, or right to hold a regular market, which either forced a merchant to make all stops along a prescribed tollway route, or pay a trade taxation to avoid a staple right city. The Berlin-area towns of Spandau and Köpenick formed an alliance in 1307. Electors of Brandenburg, kings of Prussia and German emperors, respectively, the House of Hohenzollern ruled in Berlin from the late 11th century to 1918. Frederick II Irontooth, starting in 1448, constructed the Royal Palace, which first became a royal residence in 1486, when John II, posthumously named “John Cicero”, came to power. Berlin electors, and the city itself, officially became Lutheran in 1539 following Berlin-Cölln’s loss as a free Hanseatic League city. Between 1618 and 1648, the Thirty Years’ War took a heavy toll on Berlin, with a third of its houses being damaged or destroyed, and half of its population being decimated. Beginning in 1640, Frederick William initiated a policy to promote immigration to, and religious tolerance in, Berlin. Thereafter, following a Huguenot immigration, approximately 30 percent of Berlin’s population had become French by the year 1700, with additional immigrants arriving from Bohemia, Poland, and Salzburg. The Kingdom of Prussia, in 1701, formed out of a personal union between the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia. At this time, Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg crowned himself King Frederick I in Prussia. Through a successful attempt to centralize power, King Frederick I replaced Königsberg (presently Kalingrad, Russia) with Berlin as the new Kingdom of Prussia’s capital city. Berlin merged with the four cities of Cölln, Friedrichswerder, Friedrichstadt and Dorotheenstadt in 1709. Frederick II, or “Frederick the Great “, in 1740 came to power and saw both a period of Enlightenment and the Seven Years’ War. Napoleon Bonaparte, after a victory in the War of the Fourth Coalition between France and Prussia, in 1806 marched into Berlin, though granted it self-government, with the city becoming part of the new Province of Brandenburg circa 1815. During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution expanded the city’s economy and population. Germany’s main railway hub and economic center, Berlin and its suburban areas grew, and the city became the newly founded German Empire‘s capital in 1871. The Berlin city district separated from Brandenburg in 1881. Early in the 20th century, German Expressionism was strong in the city. The Weimar Republic, with Berlin remaining its capital, was proclaimed following the First World War. The Roaring Twenties, a time of prosperity particularly in the Western world, was also a period of economic uncertainty in Berlin, a place where Albert Einstein lived from 1914-1933, and during which time he received the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. Inspired by architecture that he had experienced in Vienna, Adolf Hitler had grand architectural designs planned for Berlin, which ultimately were never fulfilled. Between 1933 and 1939, about 80,000 (or half) of Berlin’s Jewish population emigrated from the city. The Summer Olympics were held in Berlin circa 1936, at which time the Olympiastadion was built. In Berlin on November 9, 1938, Kristallnacht, also known as “Night of Broken Glass” and “November pogroms”, prompted largely by the assassination of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Polish-Jewish, Welmar Germany expatriate Herschel Grynszpan in Paris, resulted in Jewish structures being damaged or destroyed, at least 91 deaths and thousands of the city’s Jews being imprisoned in the nearby Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Multiple Nazi prisons and camps, holding peoples from various European countries as well as Allied POWs, existed in Berlin throughout World War II. From 1943-45, and particularly during the 1945 Battle of Berlin, Allied air raids resulted in large parts of Berlin being destroyed alongside heavy civilian casualties. Following the Second World War, Berlin was divided into West (United States, United Kingdom and France) and East (Soviet Union), with all four “Allies” sharing administrative responsibilities. One of the first international crises of the Cold War was the Soviet Union’s Berlin Blockade, prompted by the Western Allies’ introduction of the Deutsche Mark into West Berlin, which blocked the Western Allies’ access to railways, roads and canals under Western control. Berlin Airlift, from the Summer of 1948 through the Fall of 1949, was a feat carried out by American and British air forces, during which time over 250,000 flights dropped up to 12,941 tons of supplies (food and fuel) per day onto West Berlin. In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in West Germany, and the Marxist–Leninist German Democratic Republic was proclaimed in East Germany. Naturally, this division increased Cold War tensions further. The Berlin Wall was planned to be built around West Berlin starting in 1961, which led to a US and Soviet tank standoff at Checkpoint Charlie, an infamous Berlin Wall crossing-point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. On June 26, 1963, just 3 months before his assassination, President John F. Kennedy, in West Berlin, gave his Ich bin ein Berliner speech, which renounced Communism. A Four-Power agreement, guaranteeing access to and from West Berlin, was met in 1971 between East and West Berlin foreign ministers. On June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan gave a speech at Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, infamously calling on Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” The opening of the Iron Curtain on August 19, 1989, followed by the Berlin Wall’s destruction on November 9, 1989, naturally were causes of great rejoice amongst the German people. Following the Cold War, Berlin experienced significant urban development, and on June 18, 1994, soldiers from the United States, France and Britain marched in a Berlin parade to commemorate the reunification of the city.
Home to over 3.8 million “Berliners”, Berlin is Germany’s capital and largest city. The European Union’s second-most populous city behind London, Berlin produced a total GDP of €147 billion in 2018. The city’s economy is dominated by the service sector, with about 85% of companies conducting business through services. Over 30 million tourists per year visit Grey City. Along with Hamburg and Bremen, Berlin is a German Stadtstaaten, or city-state, while also being 1 of 16 federal states. Spanning 110-acres and colored with around 22,000 different plant species, Botanischer Garten is one of the world’s largest botanical gardens. Some of Central Europe’s top-rated Michelin restaurants can be found in Berlin. The city’s coat of arms displays a bear, and is thus an example of canting arms. Home to a temperate climate, Berlin experiences generally mild summers and winters, with July/August high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s degrees Fahrenheit, and December/January highs in the mid-to-upper 30s. Additional points of interest include Berlin Palace, Bellevue Palace, Konzerthaus Berlin, Museum Island, Pergamon Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Egyptian Museum of Berlin, Rotes Rathaus (town hall), Victory Column, Gendarmenmarkt, Potsdam Square, Breitscheidplatz, The New Church, French Cathedral, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Potsdamer Platz and Humboldt University of Berlin. Popular foods include sauerbraten (Germany’s national dish, a traditional, heavily marinated meat roast, usually beef), bratwurst (pork or veal link sausage), schnitzel (tenderized, breaded, fried, thin slice of meat, typically pork), kassler (cured, slightly smoked cut of pork), eisbein (corned ham hock), buletten (German hamburgers), königsberger klopse (German meatballs), currywurst (fast food dish, a steamed, fried, spicy sausage), döner kebab (Turkish, similar to shawarma and gyros), fried veal liver, roast goose (Christmas-time), spätzle (egg noodles), kartoffelpuffer (German potato pancakes), senfeier (German eggs in mustard sauce), pretzels, pfannkuchen (German pancakes), Berliner pfannkuche (doughnut), rote grütze (sweet fruit dish), schwarzwälder kirschtorte (Black Forest cake), apfelstrudel (apple strudel), chocolate and ice cream. Drinks are lager beer (pilsner), wheat/sour beer (Berliner Weisse), craft beer, Schnapps, Halb und Halb (orange bitter liquor), ayran (Turkish yogurt drink), black tea, fruit tea and mineral water. Good to know is that “Ein Absacker” means the last drink before going home, or nightcap. Excited perhaps by some more background information on the area. we’re ready for Berlin accommodations that will help make for an unforgettable experience.
