Dallas accommodations are some of the southwestern United States’ best. Before we get to Dallas accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

North Texas was inhabited first by indigenous tribes to include the Caddo Nation, Comanche Nation, Wichita, Kickapoo and Tawakoni. Following European arrival, Texas was controlled by Spain (Early Spanish explorations – 1519–1543), France (French Texas – 1684–1689), Spain (Spanish ‘Tejas’ Texas – 1690–1821), Mexico (Mexican Texas – 1821–1836), the Republic of Texas (1836–1845), the United States (Republic of Texas annexed to the USA, becoming 28th State – 1845–1860), the Confederate States (Texas secedes from the Union, joins Confederacy – 1861–1865) and the United States (post-Civil War – 1865-present), respectively. Spain first arrived to conduct slave raids in the 16th century, which created long-lasting, Native American disdain for Spain in particular. In 1685, France intended to establish a settlement at the mouth of the Mississippi River, but inaccurate maps and navigational errors led them 400-miles astray westerly to Texas, where French explorer René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle and members of his expedition established Fort Saint-Louis. France’s colonization of Texas lasted only three years (1685-1688), mainly due to epidemics, challenging conditions and Native American raids. In 1716, following a failed attempt 26 years prior, Spanish colonists claimed the Texas territory permanently for New Spain’s Viceroyalty, with San Antonio becoming the capital circa 1719. The Apache Nation’s easternmost band, the Lipan Apache gave Spain the most trouble early-on, until peaceful terms were met in 1749. Subsequently, both the Spanish and Lipan were met with Comanche raids until 1785, when an additional peace agreement was negotiated among all parties. Through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the United States acquired northern portions of Texas, and Anglo-American influence increased in the area. Napoleon’s abdication of King Ferdinand VII in May 1808 created uncertainty regarding who was actually in control of the Spanish Empire, especially in the colonies. The 1810-1821 Mexican War of Independence between Mexico and Spain resulted in an independence agreement, with the Spanish Empire losing the territory of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Toward the war’s end, the 1819 Adams–Onís Treaty established the Red River as New Spain’s northern boundary, placing future-Dallas in Spanish territory. When Mexico declared independence from Spain in 1821, however, the Dallas-area fell briefly into the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, when a majority of Anglo-American settlers formed the Republic of Texas. Presbyterian farmer, lawyer and tradesman John Neely Bryan, two years after after planting a stake in the ground on a Trinity River three forks bluff, established a permanent settlement named Dallas in 1841. Although the settlement name’s origin is unclear, several possibilities include future Vice President George M. Dallas, one of Dallas’ brothers Commodore Alexander James, James R. or Walter Dallas or Dallas, Moray, Scotland. In 1845, the Republic of Texas was annexed by the United States, and the following year Dallas County was established, with Dallas being formally incorporated as a city on February 2, 1856. Texas’ first railroad was the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway (BBB&C), which began operating a 20-mile connection in 1853. Farming, the cattle trade and its strategic location on trade routes helped sustain early-Dallas. On February 1, 1861, Texas declared its secession from the Union. Replacing governor Sam Houston with Lieutenant Governor Edward Clark, Texas joined the Confederate States on March 2, 1861. Confederate Texas was most useful for supplying the Confederate Army with soldiers and supplies. Following the Civil War, Texas was absorbed back into the Union, as the Declaration of Secession had not been officially recognized by the US government at Washington, DC. More railroads were constructed in the late-19th century, and the Dallas-area became a hub for the shipping of commodities such as cotton and oil. One of the first skyscrapers west of the Mississippi, the Praetorian Building was built at Main and Stone Streets in downtown Dallas circa 1909. Around this time, thoroughbred horseracing, which included the Dallas Jockey Club and a Fort Worth racetrack, was introduced to the area. On March 3, 1910, black man Allen Brooks, accused of raping a young white girl, was lynched at the downtown intersection of Main and Akard. During the Great Depression, Dallas was relatively unaffected, helped largely by oilman Columbus Marion “Dad” Joiner’s striking of oil in Kilgore (100 miles east of Dallas) in 1930. Through the Texas oil boom, Dallas became Texas and Oklahoma’s financial center for the oil industry. During World War II, Ford’s plant in East Dallas produced over 94,000 jeeps and over 6,000 military trucks, while North American Aviation manufactured over 18,000 aircraft at its Dallas plant, for the United States and Allied forces. On November 22, 1963, passing through Dealey Plaza in a convertible car alongside his wife Jacqueline and motorcade, US President John F. Kennedy was struck by two bullets, and pronounced dead 30 minutes later at Dallas Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Home to around 1.3 million “Dallasites”, Dallas is the Lone Star State’s third most populous city behind Houston and San Antonio. Big D spans 385.9 square miles, 43.87 of which are occupied by water. A major business hub, Dallas is corporate headquarters for a number of publicly traded companies such as AT&T, Energy Transfer LP, Tenet Healthcare, Southwest Airlines and Texas Instruments. The Dallas skyline includes 262 skyscrapers, 28 of which exceed 400 feet in height. Rising 921 feet, Bank of America Plaza is the city’s tallest building. Probably the most recognizable building is the ball-shaped Reunion Tower, which makes for an impressive spectacle especially at night. Dallas is a major destination for both business and tourism, welcoming around 25 million visitors annually. One of the United States’ largest convention centers at over 1,000,000 square feet, and boasting the world’s single-largest column-free exhibit hall, Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas is located centrally, close to Reunion Tower.  The city’s humid subtropical climate accounts for hot, humid summers and mild winters with occasional cold spells. Summer highs average in the mid-90s °F, while winter highs average around 60 °F. Frost, hail and tornadoes are all entirely possible in Dallas. Additional points of interest include Downtown, Dallas Arts District, Meadows Museum, NorthPark Center, City Hall, AT&T Performing Arts Center (Dallas Center for the Performing Arts) and Union Station DallasBarbecue and Tex-Mex cuisine are both big in Dallas. Local foods include T-bone steak, tenderloin, beef brisket, ribs, sausage, cowboy chili (beef, chilis, spices, no beans), chili con queso and chips, chicken-fried steak, pecan pie, lava cake, sheet cake and peach cobbler. Popular drinks are craft beer, specialty cocktails, whiskey and, invented in Dallas circa 1971, the frozen margarita. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Dallas accommodations that are sure to knock your boots off.

Nashville accommodations are some of the southern United States’ best. Before we get to Nashville accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Native Americans inhabited the Nashville area for an estimated 14,000 years. It is believed that the first settlers arrived during the Paleoindian period circa 13,000 BC. The Middle Cumberland Mississippian tribe, who built platform mounds, palisaded villages and stone box cemeteries, vanished from the area sometime around 1500 AD. From there, various tribes, including the Shawnee, Cherokee and Chickasaw, utilized the area as a hunting ground. In 1710, French trader Charles Charleville established a trading post named French Lick, which would later become Nashville. French Canadian fur trader Timothy Demonbreun, who utilized the French Lick trading post and lived in a cave alongside the Cumberland River, is thought to be the first non-native to inhabit the area permanently. Although John Buchanan may have arrived in the area shortly beforehand, James Robertson generally is regarded as negotiating the area’s first permanent European settlement, Fort Nashborough. Fort Nashborough was named after brigadier general Francis Nash, a Revolutionary War hero. In 1780, French Lick was officially renamed to Nashboro, which was in turn renamed to Nashville circa 1784. By 1800, Nashville had 345 residents, 136 of which were slaves. Nashville was incorporated in 1806 and became Tennessee’s capital in 1843. The city became a center for trade in tobacco, hemp, livestock and slaves, as well as a breeding and training ground for thoroughbred horses. Moreover, Nashville was considered one of the south’s wealthiest cities on account of its iron production. Nashville was not immune to adversity, however, as a mid-19th-century cholera epidemic took the lives of about 630 of 10,000 residents, including former president James K. Polk. About 700 free blacks in northern Nashville, and about 3,200 slaves in the city, lived in the area before the Civil War. Antebellum Nashville indeed had become a prosperous city by 1860, just prior to the war. A prized shipping port and railway center, however, Nashville became the first Confederate state capital to fall to Union forces in February 1862. The Union Army occupied the city throughout the war, and many slaves fled northward. The December 15-16, 1864 Battle of Nashville between the Union and Confederate States resulted in a Union victory and the disbanding of the Army of Tennessee. In 1872 and 1875, freedmen David Jones and Jo Reed were lynched in Nashville. Reed escaped, however, as the rope from which he had been hanged over a suspension bridge had broken. Cholera struck Nashville again in 1873. Suspected of assaulting two white sisters, brothers Ephraim and Henry Grizzard were lynched in early-1892. In 1893, the magazine Confederate Veteran began publication, and in 1894 the United Daughters of the Confederacy first organized. The Parthenon, an Athens Parthenon replica, was built in 1897. Founded on November 28, 1925 by George D. Hay, the Grand Ole Opry started out as a one-hour radio “barn dance” on WSM radio. Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack opened at the corner of Jefferson Street and 28th Avenue in 1945. On September 14, 1946, at a time when recording studios started emerging, Hank Williams visited the city and auditioned for the Grand Ole Opry, but was rejected. Six years later, Williams moved to Nashville and shared a house with singer Ray Price, who left soon thereafter due to Williams’ alcoholism. The musical style Nashville Sound had become popular by the late-1950s. Elvis Presley made his first recordings for RCA in Nashville circa January 10, 1956. One of the 20-century’s most influential vocalists, Patsy Cline moved to Music City in 1958 and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1964, Dolly Parton moved to Nashville, where she found immediate success as a songwriter alongside her uncle and songwriting partner Bill Owens. A destination for jazz and blues musicians, Jefferson Street was split by the federal government’s Interstate 40 in the late 1960s, a time when Johnny Cash moved to the city from Memphis. Jimmie Rodgers, regarded as the father of Country Music, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame circa 1970 alongside Hank Williams, Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart, Cindy Walker, Gene Autry, Johnny Bond and Bob Wills. The Tennessee Oilers played their first game at Vanderbilt Stadium in 1998, the same year the Nashville Predators were founded. A year later, Nissan Stadium opened, and the Oilers changed their name to the Tennessee Titans.

Tennessee’s capital and most populous city, Nashville is home to around 715,00 “Nashvillians”. Nashville is about 300 miles southwest of country music’s birthplace, Bristol, Tennessee. Music City’s skyline consists of 38 skyscrapers at 300 feet or higher. Under construction, Paramount Tower is slated to be Nashville’s tallest building at 750 feet (60 stories) by 2027. Probably the city’s most recognizable building is the AT&T Building, locally dubbed the “Batman Building” due to its resemblance of said comic book character. Several notable mansions are found throughout the Nashville area. These estates include the aforementioned Hermitage (Andrew Jackson’s – American general, 7th US President), country music singer Barbara Mandrell’s Fontanel Mansion and plantation owners Adelicia and Joseph Acklen’s Belmont Mansion. Established in 1873 and presently enrolling around 13,000 students, Vanderbilt University is found on the city’s southwest side. Defined by a pleasant, humid subtropical climate, Nashville’s high temperatures average around 90 ℉ in July, and 47 ℉ in January. Tree leaves do fall in Nashville, with mid-October through mid-November usually the best time for Fall foliage. Snowfall is possible in winter months, though typically is not heavy. Additional points of interest include Tennessee Tower Plaza, Lower Broadway (“Lower Broad” – honky tonk bars), Printer’s Alley (historic, cobblestone, printing industry alleyway – live music venues, nightclubs, bars), RCA Studio B (birthplace of “Nashville sound” background vocals / strings – built 1957) and Tennessee State Capitol. Local foods include meat and three (pick 1 meat, add 3-6 sides), hot chicken, steak, barbecue (pulled pork, glazed ribs, etc.), mac ‘n cheese, spicy beans, coleslaw, hamburgers, fish and chips, biscuits and chocolate. Honky tonk drinks typically involve whiskey, tequila, bourbon or vodka, while craft breweries are found throughout the city. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Nashville accommodations that are sure to knock your boots off.

Honolulu accommodations are some of the Pacific’s best. Before we get to Honolulu accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

The word “Honolulu” means “sheltered harbor” or “calm port” in Hawaiian. Hawaii’s first settlers are believed to be Polynesian migrants, who crossed over 2,000 miles of ocean in Waʻa double-hulled canoes from the modern Marquesas Islands, sometime around the 11th century. The first foreigner to encounter Honolulu Harbor was British whaling captain William Brown circa November 1794. Thereafter, Honolulu became a focal point for foreign merchant ships sailing between North America and Asia. Captain Brown initially took sides with Maui chief Kahekili II, but was later killed along with several of his men by King of Oahu Kalanikupule. Fought in May 1795, the Battle of Nuʻuanu between conqueror / Kingdom of Hawaii first ruler “Kamehameha The Great” Kamehameha I and Oahu’s King Kalanikupule resulted in a Kamehameha I victory. From Big Island (Hawai’i) Kamehameha landed near Waiʻalae and Waikiki before advancing westward on Kalanikupule’s positions near Punchbowl Crater. Kamehameha’s army flanked Kalanikupule and drove his warriors northward, ultimately to the cliffs at Nuʻuanu Pali, below which construction workers in 1896 discovered about 800 skulls believed to be remains of Kalanikupule’s warriors who had fallen to their deaths. After the battle, Kamehameha I moved his royal court from Big Island to Waikiki circa 1804. In 1809, the court relocated to present-day downtown Honolulu, but in 1812 moved back to Kailua-Kona. American Protestant missionaries arrived in April 1823. Led by Hiram Bingham I, the missionaries introduced Christianity to the Hawaiian Islands. Kawaiahaʻo Church, constructed of around 14,000 thousand-pound slabs of coral rock, was established in downtown Honolulu around the time of the missionaries’ arrival. The Kingdom of Hawaii’s third king Kamehameha III moved the permanent capital from Maui’s Lahaina to Honolulu in 1845. From there, modern buildings were constructed such as ʻIolani Palace, Aliʻiōlani Hale and St. Andrew’s Cathedral, respectively. American missionary descendants established major downtown businesses in the mid-19th century. In 1893, the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown by way of a coup d’état against Queen Liliʻuokalani, and Hawaii was subsequently annexed by the United States in 1898. Thereafter, adversity struck in the form of bubonic plague / a large fire in 1900, followed by the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. A high-speed passenger liner, America Maru arrived at Honolulu Harbor in October 1899 carrying a shipment of rice, along with rats. Destined for Chinatown, the rice-rats, along with poor living conditions / sewage disposal, created a perfect storm that unleashed bubonic plague. Part of the authorities’ response was to incinerate garbage and torch affected buildings. On January 20, 1900 winds picked up and an out-of-control conflagration ensued. Blazing for seventeen days, the Chinatown fire destroyed 38 acres of Honolulu, though without any casualties. 41 years later, on December 7, 1941, an even more devastating situation commenced, the attack on Pearl Harbor. A surprise military strike by the Empire of Japan, the attack on Pearl Harbor began at 7:48 a.m. The Japanese sent two waves from six aircraft carriers – 353 fighter aircraft, bombers and torpedo bombers. All 8 U.S. battleships were damaged, including 5 that sank, and 2,403 Americans were killed. Despite adversity in the first half of the 20th century, Honolulu remained the Hawaiian Islands’ capital. Hawaii became the United States’ 50th state on August 21, 1959, and from there Honolulu experienced a tourism boom.

Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu is home to around 350,000 “Kamaʻāina”. The remotest city of its size in the world, Honolulu has thrived as a port city. The United States Pacific Fleet, the world’s largest naval command, is based at Pearl Harbor to this day. Honolulu’s tallest building at 438-feet is First Hawaiian Center, though for many years prior was Aloha Tower near the waterfront. Notable neighborhoods are Downtown (financial center), the Arts District (within Chinatown Historic District), Capital District (eastern downtown – historic center), Kakaʻako (between Downtown and Waikiki – shopping areas), Ala Moana (between Kakaʻako and Waikiki – more shopping) and Waikiki (tourist district – hotels, shops, nightlife). Livable though expensive, Honolulu is one of the United States’ safest cities. High-priced homes are located in the affluent Waiʻalae and Kāhala districts. Along with finance, East / West trading, manufacturing, research and development and military defense, tourism is a major economic contributor. Honolulu received about 1.5 million visitors in 2024. Home to a semi-arid climate, Honolulu experiences fairly consistent temperatures year-round. Highs average between 80-90 ℉, while lows typically range between 65-75 ℉. Rainy season occurs between October and early-April. Sea temperatures range from 75.7 °F in March to 80.4 °F in September, with waves being highest during the winter months. Additional points of interest include Honolulu ZooUniversity of Hawaii’i, Hawaiʻi Theatre, Neal Blaisdell Center, Waikīkī Shell, Diamond Head TheatreUSS Arizona Memorial and Aloha Stadium. Local foods include various seafoods (wahoo, goatfish, mahi mahi, ahi tuna, opah, kampachi, etc.), barbecue, poi (Indonesian staple food – pasty-purple, vitamin-rich), poke (diced raw fish), kalua pig (smoky, shredded pork dish), haupia (traditional coconut / milk-based dessert) and Hawaiian ice (vanilla ice cream & flavored ice block shavings – guava, coconut, passion fruit, pineapple, mango, kiwi, lychee, li hing mui, etc.). Popular drinks include signature cocktails (Flaming Volcanos, Mango Martinis, Lava Flows, Kiwi Coladas, Blue Hawaiis, etc.), craft beer and wine. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Honolulu accommodations that will help make for an unforgettable experience.

Las Vegas Accommodations

Hotels in Las Vegas Nevada

Las Vegas accommodations

Las Vegas accommodations welcome you to a destination nicknamed “Sin City”. Known for its bright lights, dramatic scenery, diverse entertainment, fine dining, upscale retail boutiques, exotic cars, conventions / exhibits and gambling, Las Vegas is located in southern Nevada, about a 2-hour drive from Death Valley National Park. Elevating to 6,937 feet, The Las Vegas Mountain Range creates a dramatic backdrop against the city. The Las Vegas Valley consists of 4 cities (Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City) and 7 towns (Summerlin South, Enterprise, Spring Valley, Sunrise Manor, Paradise, Whitney, Winchester), along with Nellis Air Force Base and Pahrump.  Las Vegas Valley top attractions include Fremont Street Experience (24-hour shopping mall – casino / restaurant access, entertainment, LED canopy), Mandalay Bay Beach (11-acre aquatic playground), Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign (tourist attraction), High Roller (observation wheel), World Market Center (convention center), Las Vegas North Premium Outlets (outlet mall), Las Vegas South Premium Outlets (outlet mall), Sphere (event venue), AREA15 (immersive entertainment venue – art shows, VR experiences, axe throwing, flight simulator), T-Mobile Arena, The Mob Museum (historic courthouse / museum), Town Square Las Vegas (open-air entertainment center – retail shops, restaurants, movie theater), Las Vegas Convention Center, Pinball Hall of Fame (museum), The Neon Museum Las Vegas (Vegas signage museum), Sunset Park (massive country park – jogging trails, sports fields, 9-acre lake, enclosed pet area), Downtown Summerlin (retail stores, restaurants, baseball park), Allegiant Stadium, One World Interactive Aquarium, Downtown Container Park (shopping mall built from shipping containers – galleries, courtyard, playground), Blueberry Hill Family Restaurant, Zak Bagans’ The Haunted Museum (as seen on TV), Madame Tussauds Las Vegas (wax museum), Bass Pro Shops (sporting goods store), Galleria At Sunset (shopping mall), NuWu Cannabis (cannabis store), Las Vegas Motor Speedway (car racing / NASCAR venue), Gold & Silver Pawn Shop (as seen on TV), Topgolf Las Vegas, The District at Green Valley Ranch (retail center – eateries, kids splash-pad), Maverick Helicopters (helicopter tour agency), Discovery Children’s Museum, Shelby American (car museum), Clark County Wetlands Park (walking trails, wetlands, bird-watching, 45-000 ft² nature center), Clark County Museum, Thomas & Mack Center (UNLV arena), West Wind Las Vegas Drive-In (drive-in movie theater), Speed Vegas (car racing venue), Orleans Arena, Aliante Nature Discovery Park (20-acre park – tennis / volleyball courts, lake, waterfall, dinosaur-themed kids area), Lion Habitat Ranch (zoo), Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden, RISE Dispensary Las Vegas on Nellis (cannabis store), Las Vegas Nevada Temple (Latter-day Saints church), MGM Grand Pool Complex, The Aquarium at Silverton Casino, Las Vegas Science & Natural History Museum, Tree Of Life Weed Dispensary North Las Vegas (cannabis store), Dig This – Las Vegas (amusement park), Dream Exotics Las Vegas Car Rentals, Royalty Exotic Cars (car rental agency), Big Shot (amusement park ride), TPC Las Vegas (golf club), The Las Vegas Country Club, Highland Falls Golf Club, Dragonridge Country Club, TPC Summerlin (golf club), Canyon Gate Country Club, Anthem Country Club and Eagle Crest Golf CourseBordering the Las Vegas Valley are Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area  (westerly) and Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area (southerly). Outward from Las Vegas, notable places include Spring Mountain Ranch (20 miles SW), Lake Mead (30 miles SE), Pioneer Saloon (30 miles SW), Hoover Dam (35 miles SE), Valley of Fire State Park (45 miles NW), Area 51 (80 miles N), Grand Canyon (120 miles E) and Lake Havasu (150 miles S). The upscale suburbs of Summerlin and Henderson can be found on the valley’s outskirts. Las Vegas’ main airport is Harry Reid International Airport. Good to know is that rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft do operate in Las Vegas, with service to include to airport. Sin City hot spots are Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip), where modern hotels, casinos and entertainment are to be discovered, and aforementioned Fremont Street, the city’s original location, home to vintage entertainment. Fremont Street is a short drive northward from The Strip. A major sports town of late, the city’s professional sports teams are the Las Vegas Raiders, the Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Aces. Vegas has hosted the World Series of Poker for the last 55 years. On The Strip especially, keep in mind that rideshare vehicles and taxis have designated drop-off / pickup areas (usually in front of the hotel / casino). While scorpions generally are uncommon in entertainment areas, they can be found in residential areas and are locally called “bugs”. Vegas top events include the aforementioned World Series of Poker, Cirque du Soleil, NASCAR Cup SeriesDowntown Brew Festival, The Nth Las Vegas, Las Vegas Food & Wine FestivalGreat American Foodie Fest, Las Vegas Pizza Festival, Summerlin Festival of Arts, CES, PPAI Expo, MAGIC Las Vegas,  EDC Las Vegas, Boots In The Park Las Vegas, Exodus Festival Las Vegas, iHeart Radio Music Festival, When We Were Young Festival, Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend, Big Blues Bender, Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con, Age of Chivalry and AVN Adult Entertainment Expo. Las Vegas accommodations are some of the southwestern United States’ best. Before we get to Las Vegas accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Las Vegas is a relatively young city. Human presence in the area, however, dates back roughly 10,000 years, as evidenced by Paleo-Indian petroglyphs found at Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. About 2,000 years ago, Ancient Puebloan and Paiute tribes inhabited the area. The first non-Native American to behold the Las Vegas Valley is believed to be Rafael Rivera, a Mexican scout who in 1829 took part in Spanish explorer Antonio Armijo’s Spanish Trail expedition. With a 60-man party, Armijo set out from Nuevo Mexico along the Spanish Trail, intended for Los Angeles. During the Spanish Party expedition, a scouting party rode west in search of water. An inexperienced Rivera left the main party and, within two weeks, discovered an artesian spring water supply at Las Vegas Springs, a natural, bubbling oasis (cienega). United States Army officer, explorer and politician John C. Frémont, about 14 years after Rivera’s discovery, led an expedition west. On May 13, 1844 Fremont camped at Las Vegas Springs,, and his writings therein eventually attracted pioneers to the area. 11 years after Fremont, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members chose the Las Vegas Springs area, which was about halfway between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, to build a fort. Known as Old Mormon Fort, the area’s first permanent structure was abandoned several years later, though remnants of which are still standing at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue. Built in New Mexico folk carpenter architectural style, Old Mormon Fort served to facilitate travel along the Spanish Trail. 50 years after the Old Mormon Fort was constructed, Las Vegas was founded as a city circa 1905. 110 acres of land adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks (modern downtown area) were auctioned. Hotel Nevada opened at 1 Fremont Street on January 13, 1906. 5 years later, Las Vegas was incorporated as a city. By 1931, Nevada had legalized casino gambling and reduced residency requirements for divorce to 6 weeks. Around this time, Hoover Dam tunnels began construction, which naturally assuaged economic hardship during the Great Depression, and presented mobsters with an opportunity to offer illicit activities to construction workers. On March 1, 1936, 2 years ahead of schedule, the Hoover Dam was officially completed. Established in late-1941, Las Vegas Army Airfield was ultimately renamed Nellis Air Force Base circa 1950. Nellis Air Force Base’s inauguration was attended by United States fighter pilot William Harrell Nellis’ family. Lieutenant Nellis flew 70 World War II combat missions and was shot down 3 times, the last time fatally. Hotels, casinos and entertainment largely were ushered in post-World War II. In May 1946, Bugsy Siegel took control of the Flamingo hotel, which opened unfinished on December 26, 1946. 65 miles northward of Las Vegas, the Nevada Test Site began nuclear weapons testing in 1951. Las Vegas “Atomic City” residents and visitors could actually witness mushroom clouds in the distance, and were exposed to fallout until 1963. The 1963 Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapon Tests in the Atmosphere, in Outer Space and Under Water brought an end to an era of Las Vegas-area mushroom clouds. Tycoons such as Howard Hughes started buying and building hotel-casino properties during the 1960s, and the term gambling was rebranded as “gaming”. Anthony Spilotro moved to Las Vegas in 1971 to help oversee the Chicago Outfit’s four casinos at the time, the Stardust, the Fremont, the Hacienda and the Marina. In 1995, the Fremont Street Experience opened in downtown. Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena opened on April 6, 2016, followed by Allegiant Stadium on July 31, 2020.

Nevada’s largest city, Las Vegas is home to around 700,000 ” Las Vegans” (not all vegans). Once ran by Jewish and Italian mobsters such as Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and Anthony Spilotro, Sin City has been reshaped significantly since its early days. The Vegas of today is much more than just a gambling town and, as its nickname implies, place of ill-repute. Performing arts, professional sporting events, concerts, conventions, trade shows, exhibitions, museums, recreational activities, fine dining, upscale shopping, immersive experiences and more have all been introduced to a reimagined Las Vegas. A top-three USA destination for conventions, the city is home to the aforementioned Las Vegas Convention Center, or “LVCC”, which ranks as the United States’ third-largest convention center at 2,500,000 square feet. In 2023, 40.8 million people visited Vegas. Home to a hot desert climate, Las Vegas experiences extreme summer heat, short winters and cool nights. On average, 310 days per year are sunny. During peak summertime, the sun can damage parked cars’ steering wheels and heat asphalt parking lot surfaces to 160°F or more, which technically is hot enough to cook an egg (not recommended). The desert climate does offer a positive, however, in that it lacks humidity. Additional points of interest include The STRAT TowerGolden Nugget Tank PoolLas Vegas Springs Preserve, Las Vegas Arts DistrictSmith Center for the Performing Arts, Symphony Park (mixed-use district) and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Las Vegas restaurants and buffets are plentiful. A range of foods includes prime rib, shrimp cocktails, Chilean sea bass, Maine lobster rolls, cannoli, chicken and waffles and much more. Casino-themed alcoholic beverages are popular in Vegas. Drinks typically are free for gamblers on the casino floors. Tipping cocktail waitresses with casino chips is common practice. Keep in mind, however, that tipping with casino chips technically goes against Nevada gaming regulations, and could be considered a violation of federal mint laws, though enforcement is rare. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Las Vegas accommodations that will help make for an amazing experience.

New Orleans Accommodations

Hotels in New Orleans LA

New Orleans accommodations

New Orleans accommodations welcome you to a destination nicknamed “The Big Easy” and “NOLA”. Known for its fleur-de-lis (heraldic lily symbol ⚜️), streetcars, steamboats, ferries, distinctive neighborhoods, Creole/Cajun restaurants, live music/cocktail bars, coffee houses, cafes, festivals, notable streets, parks, squares, monuments, statues, museums, theaters, art galleries and voodoo shops, New Orleans is located in southernmost Louisiana, not far from the Mississippi border. Flowing in a serpentine path, the Mississippi River passes through the city’s southside before bending southward for 100 miles, splitting into four distributaries (Head of Passes) and emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. A charming city, NOLA is home to Bourbon Street, which hosts the world-famous Mardi Gras celebration. Not far from the Central Business District, Bourbon Street is  found in the city’s oldest neighborhood of Vieux Carre Historic District, or French Quarter. Founded by the French in 1718, the French Quarter is home to colorful buildings with cast-iron balconies, jazz clubs, Cajun restaurants, lively bars, street performers and more. New Orleans’ main attractions include Cafe Du Monde (iconic French Quarter coffee shop – beignets), Jackson Square (French Quarter historical landmark), The National WWII Museum (war museum),  New Orleans City Park (expansive greenspace, dog run, museums, disc golf…), Oceana Grill (seafood restaurant), Audubon Aquarium, Caesars Superdome (stadium), Shops of the Colonnade (French Quarter old-fashioned shopping area), Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar (bar), Cafe Beignet, Royal Street (bistro), Cochon Restaurant (Cajun restaurant), Riverwalk Outlets (shopping mall), Audubon Zoo, Commander’s Palace (Creole restaurant), Louis Armstrong Park (31-acres, concerts, films, events), New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center (convention center), Smoothie King Center (arena), Woldenberg Park (16-acres, riverfront, jogging paths, Mississippi River views), Mardi Gras World (art museum), House of Blues Restaurant & Bar (live music venue, Preservation Hall (French Quarter live music venue), St. Louis Cathedral (French Quarter Cathedral) and Nola Pedal Barge – Swamp Tour Party Boat (tour operator). Bordering / surrounding New Orleans, points of interest include Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge (northward, 24-miles long), Lake Borgne, Lake Cataouatche, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve (National reserve – wetland area, boat tours, battlefield, cemetery, cultural centers), Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge (protected marshland, alligators, various bird species, walkways, fishing, hunting), Fort Proctor (historic fort ruins – accessible by boat only), Hopedale Marina, Venice Marina, Pass A Loutre State Wildlife Management Area (wildlife refuge accessible by boat – fishing, camping, crabbing…), Grand Isle State Park (state park – breakwater beach, wildlife viewing, fishing, swimming, hiking, 2.5-mile trail), Grand Isle Beach, Elmer’s Island Wildlife Refuge, Elmer’s Island Beach, Fourchon Marina, Oak Alley Plantation (history museum), Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area (wetland forest, bird-watching, hunting, fishing, camping) and Fontainebleau State Park. Just westward, New Orleans’ main airport is Louis Armstrong New Orleans International AirportAirport car rental agencies include Enterprise, Alamo and National Car Rental. Good to know is that Uber and Lyft do operate in New Orleans, with service to include the airport. Public transportation, including the city’s historic streetcar and ferry services, is managed by New Orleans Regional Transit Authority. New Orleans operates four streetcars, which cost $1.25 one-way (using exact change), with $.25 transfers. Additionally, one may purchase a Jazzy Pass, or utilize the Le Pass app, for unlimited/seamless streetcar rides. Winners of one Super Bowl, the New Orleans Saints play at Caesars Superdome in the Central Business District. Not far southwest from Caesars Superdome, Smoothie King Center is the New Orleans Pelicans‘ home arena. NOLA vibes are generally laid-back and easy-going. New Orleans is pronounced “New AHL-lee-ins” by locals, or more commonly “New OR-lins”. Some locals speak a unique dialect known as the Yat accent, an example of which being “Where y’at?” (how are you?). Additional accents are Uptown and Black and White working-class dialects. If visiting The Big Easy during Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, there are some things to keep in mind. You’ll want to try and book your hotel at least 8 months in advance. During Mardi Gras, hotels often require 4-to-5-day minimum stays. Mardi Gras rules to remember are to keep coolers and grills at least 6 feet from the curb and to drink beverages in cans or cups, as glass bottles are not permitted. Prolonged flashing/nudity, as well as public urination, can lead to arrest. Be sure to arrive at least 4 hours early for Mardi Gras and remember that the general public’s vehicles are not allowed within the French Quarter during this time. Aside from Mardi Gras, year-round live music seekers may find lively entertainment on Frenchmen Street. Additional NOLA events include New Orleans Film Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival, French Quarter Festival, Satchmo SummerFestFreret Street Festival, Tales of the Cocktail, Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, Bayou Boogaloo, NOLA on Tap, Oktoberfest New Orleans, Hogs for the Cause, Brews Boils & Bubbles, Louisiana Derby, Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Legs n’ Dregs Brewery Marathon, Shamrockin Run New Orleans, FAN EXPO New Orleans and Louisiana Renaissance Festival (Hammond LA – not far northward). New Orleans accommodations are some of the Gulf Coast’s best. Before we get to New Orleans accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Prior to European settlement, the Choctaw referred to the New Orleans-area as Bulbancha, or “land of many tongues”. Early in 1718, La Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans) was founded by the French Mississippi Company, a corporation that held a business monopoly in North America and other places. Named after French prince, soldier and statesman Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, the new city was established on land inhabited by the Chitimacha people of Louisiana’s Southeastern Woodlands. Early-on, the French came into conflict with numerous Native America tribes. Most notably, the Natchez, during the 1720 Natchez Revolt, overran Fort Rosalie and killed approximately 230 French colonists. As a consequence of their revolt, the Natchez were either killed, enslaved or dispersed among other tribes. The actions between the Natchez and French led to the 1730s Chickasaw Wars, from which the Chickasaw, aligned with Great Britain, arose victorious. The Chickasaw tribe persisted in their remote, heavily fortified villages, and were never defeated by the French. Spurred by Chickasaw raids in 1748, French-Louisiana residents near Baton Rouge traveled south to take refuge in New Orleans proper. Following France’s defeat by Great Britain in the Seven Years’ War and the 1763 Treaty of Paris, France ceded Louisiana to the Spanish Empire. The French Quarter’s remaining (to this day) 18th-century architecture, with the exception of Old Ursuline Convent, actually was built during the Spanish period. New Orleans became an important port for smuggling aid, military equipment and supplies farther up the Mississippi River for American revolutionaries. France retook control of New Orleans and Louisiana by way of the 1800 Third Treaty of San Ildefonso (a secret agreement between  Spain and France). In turn, however, Napoleon sold the city and state to the United States through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The term “Dixie”, as applied to currency, originated in New Orleans. Following the Louisiana Purchase, various ethnic groups immigrated to the city, and slave labor ensued full-throttle on nearby large plantations. By 1809, 63 percent of the Territory of Orleans‘ population was black. Over half a million slaves had been brought to the area by 1810, which fueled the Confederate economy. Altogether, slaves were valued at around half a billion dollars. The “largest slave rebellion in US history” occurred on January 8, 1811, when about 500 enslaved Africans rose up and killed 2 white men, but were ultimately controlled by the local militia. During the War of 1812, the Battle of New Orleans between the United States (led by Major General Andrew Jackson) and the United Kingdom resulted in an American victory. The antebellum period, which spanned from the War of 1812’s end to the onset of the American Civil War, saw the port of New Orleans playing a major role in the Atlantic slave trade. Exports and imports were warehoused in the area, with imports being distributed up-river by smaller vessels along the Mighty Mississippi watershed. Cotton was exported to England and New England. New Orleans had both the Antebellum South’s largest slave market and the nation’s largest community of free persons of color. Horse-drawn, New Orleans’ first streetcar began operating on April 23, 1831 along Elysian Fields Avenue by the Pontchartrain Railroad Company. By 1840, New Orleans had become America’s wealthiest city. New Orleans’ per capita income ranked second in the nation. German and Irish immigrants arrived during the 1840s to work as port laborers. By 1859, New Orleans’ port was handling 659,000 tons of imported goods annually, making it third in tonnage behind Boston and New York. Creole elite were permanently disrupted by way of the American Civil War. A pivotal Civil War battle that would allow the Union unfettered control of the Mississippi River, the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip saw the Union Navy overtake the city in April, 1862. The 1863 Emancipation Proclamation brought with it violence throughout the south. At least 34 blacks and 4 whites died as a consequence of The New Orleans Massacre of 1866. The 1874 Battle of Liberty Place between the White League and Louisiana State Government ultimately resulted in a Louisiana state government victory (with Federal influence). Near the 1890s, Dixiecrats passed Jim Crow laws that established racial segregation. The famous Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision in 1896 upheld Jim Crow measures. Often credited with the creation of the po’ boy sandwich, the 1929 New Orleans streetcar strike commenced, as Amalgamated Association of Electric Street Railway Employees, Division 194, members sought better pay and working conditions. During World War II, a wartime Rationing Board office was established in the city. By the 1960s, New Orleans had fallen behind Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and Miami in terms of size, and the 1970 census tallied the city’s first absolute population decline since 1803. New Orleans’ tallest building, One Shell Square, now known as Hancock Whitney Center, was completed in 1972. Tourism became an important economic contributor beginning around the mid-1980s. Named Louisiana Superdome (opened August 3, 1975), Mercedes-Benz Superdome and Caesars Superdome, respectively, present-day Caesars Superdome has hosted 7 Super Bowls.

Home to around 385,000 “New Orleanians”, New Orleans, officially a consolidated city-parish, is Louisiana’s most populous city. A major Gulf Coast port city, New Orleans is the United States’ fifth-largest port in terms of cargo volume. Just south of Lake Pontchartrain, NOLA is located in the Mississippi River Delta, a three-million-acre area of land where the Mississippi River confluence meets the Gulf of Mexico. Naturally, both freshwater and saltwater fishing are popular outdoor activities, with fish species to include largemouth bass, speckled trout, redfish, flounder, tuna, red snapper and more. The city’s tallest building at 697 feet is Hancock Whitney Center, formerly known as One Shell Square. Most other skyscrapers are located near Canal and Poydras Streets in the Central Business District, which is just north and west of the Mississippi River. New Orleans famously is home to a range of architectural styles, which include Greek Revival, American Colonial, Victorian, Queen Anne and Italianate, along with shotgun houses, bungalows, cottages, townhouses, double-gallery houses and mansions. Embedded in Roman Catholicism, the area also is characterized by its large European-style Catholic cemeteries. Large tanker ships and smaller steam boats alike can be observed navigating the city’s waterways. Famed playwright Tennessee Williams lived in New Orleans for over 40 years. Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire takes place in the French Quarter circa the late-1940s. American trumpeter and vocalist Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans on August 4, 1901. New Orleans enjoys short, mild winters, while summers are hot and humid. 105°F is the city’s record-high temperature. Snowfall is rare, but is entirely possible. Additional points of interest are New Orleans Museum of Art, Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, Central Business District, St. Charles Avenue, Crescent City Connection (cantilever bridges), Tulane University and The University of New Orleans. Local foods include gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etouffee (sweet, meaty crawfish in rich, flavorful gravy), po-boys (traditional Louisiana sandwich – roast beef / fried seafood), muffuletta (round Sicilian sesame bread sandwich), beignets (deep-fried choux pastry) and bananas foster (dessert – bananas / vanilla ice cream). Some fun Mardi Gras drinks are Brandy Milk Punch, Vieux Carre (a variation of the Sweet Manhattan), Sazerac (a cognac / whiskey cocktail) and French 75 (sugary, lemon, gin & champagne cocktail, which dates to World War I). Keep in mind that boozy brunches are quite popular in New Orleans. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for New Orleans accommodations that will help make for a, hopefully, memorable experience.

West / southwest areas are home to suburban, and even rural farmland, scenes. About 6 miles southwest of the city, The University of Miami, or “The U”, enrolls around 20,000 students annually. As with any city one should remain wary at night and try to venture out in a group. Keep in mind that Miami clubs have strict dress code policies, so it’s recommended to check club websites beforehand for individual dress code information. Miami accommodations are some of the southern United States’ best. Before we get to Miami accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Prior to European arrival, the Miami area is thought to have been occupied for around 2,000 years by the Native American Tequesta tribe, as evidenced by an unearthed village at the Miami Circle. The Tequestas are thought to have expatriated to Cuba sometime around the mid-1700s. Spanish admiral and conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés founded St. Augustine, Florida in 1565, becoming Florida’s first governor. The following year, de Avilés claimed the area for Spain. 310 miles north of Miami, St. Augustine remained La Florida’s most significant city for nearly three centuries. In 1821,  Florida was ceded to the United States following the Adams-Onís Treaty. A military post and cantonment alongside the Miami River, Fort Dallas was established circa 1836. Old Fort Dallas supported the Florida Territory’s development, while aiding in the suppression and removal of a significant percentage of native Seminoles. The Second Seminole War of 1835 resulted in around 3,000 Seminoles being relocated to Indian Territory. Julia Tuttle, a wealthy citrus grower from Cleveland, is credited as Miami’s founder. Notably, Mrs. Tuttle, “The Mother of Miami”, was the only woman to have founded a major United States city. An anomaly, the Great Freeze of 1894, which devastated almost all of Florida’s citrus harvests, actually hastened Miami’s growth, as the area’s crops were Florida’s only to have survived.  Julia Tuttle convinced railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway to the region. On July 28, 1896, Miami was incorporated into a city with a population at just over 300. Miami experienced a land-boom during the 1920s. The subsequent 1926 Miami Hurricane, however, along with the Great Depression, halted further growth. Not until the 1940s did The Magic City experience a significant revival, which inspired the city’s nickname.

Today, the city of Miami is home to around 500,000 people, while its surrounding metropolitan area totals over 6 million. The United States’ second-highest Spanish-speaking city behind El Paso, Miami is bordered by the Everglades to its west and Biscayne Bay to its east. Known as the “Cruise Capital of the World”, The Port of Miami accommodates over 4-million annual cruise passengers, while its annual cargo tonnage totals nearly 8 million. Downtown Miami is home to Bayside Marketplace, a two-story, open-air shopping mall. The Magic City’s metropolitan area encompasses Brickell, Doral, Coral Gables, The Roads and Coconut Grove. Boasting the United States’ third-tallest skyline, Miami is home to over 300 high-rise buildings, with at least 80 buildings rising above 400 feet. Miami is home to a tropical monsoon climate. Hot, humid summers average in the mid-to-high 80-degrees Fahrenheit, while warm and dry winters average in the mid-70s. Additional points of interest include DowntownFreedom Tower, HistoryMiami Museum, Frost Science Museum, Miami River Walk, Miami TowerVirginia Key Beach, Hard Rock Stadium, Biscayne National Park, Merrick House and Gardens and Coral Castle. Local foods include stone crabs, fish sandwiches, arepas (ground maize-dough stuffed with a filling), churros, Cuban sandwiches, fritas (Cuban hamburger), empanadas and key lime pie. Cocktails often entail frozen drinks (Daiquiris, Piña Coladas, Margaritas, Mojitos, etc.), while craft beer has also become popular. The “Miami Vice” (drink) is made with pineapple juice, coconut, strawberries and rum. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Miami accommodations that will help make for a great experience.
