Lake Zurich is Switzerland’s 6th-largest lake (34 square miles). Actually potable when filtered, Lake Zurich is about 25 miles long and 1.85 miles at its widest point. The Limmat River rises in southern Zurich and continues northwest for 22 miles, where it converges with the Aare River.

Prostitution being legal in Switzerland, Zurich’s red-light district is found in Langstrasse. Zurich generally is very safe, though drug dealing is known to occur in the Langstrasse district (common in red light districts). Keep in mind that “sexting” is actually illegal in Switzerland. Zurich accommodations are some of Switzerland’s best. Before we get to Zurich accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Zürich - Schipfe-Lindenhof, Hans Leu the Elder (1460–1507)
Zürich – Schipfe-Lindenhof, Hans Leu the Elder (1460–1507)

The Lake Zurich shoreline and its surrounding lands proved to be excellent settlement grounds during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. A Celtic, pre-Roman Iron Age culture, the La Tène settled near central-Zurich’s Lindenhof Hill. During Roman times (15 BC) a castellum (small Roman tower) was built on Lindenhof. Inscribed with “Statio Turicensis Quadragesima Galliarum” (“Zürich post for collecting the 2.5% value tax of the Galliae”), a 2nd-century tombstone has been discovered at Lindenhof. Turicum served as a Galo-Roman settlement at Lake Zurich’s lower-end to collect taxes on Limmat (river) trafficked goods. Roman occupation expanded from the small tower to a settlement, and eventually into a vicus (rural village). A Roman castle was built and a garrison formed between Lake Walen and Lake Zürich. Germanic Alemannis settled in the Swiss Plateau between the Jura Mountains and Swiss Alps (5th century). The Roman castle between Walen and Zurich remained standing until the 9th century, when “Louis the German” demolished it. Frankish King Charlemagne’s grandson, Louis built a Carolingian castle on the Roman-castle site circa 835. Louis the German founded Fraumünster in 853 for his daughter Hildegard. The Catholic Order of Saint Benedict was endowed with Zürich, Uri, and Albis-forest lands and granted immunity under Louis’ direct authority. In 1045 King Henry III granted the Benedictine convent the right to hold markets, collect tolls and mint coins. Thus the abbess (female superior of Fraumünster abbey) effectively gained control over the city. The House of Zähringen went extinct in 1216 and Zurich was given imperial immediacy (privileged constitutional and political status). A city wall was built in the 1230s at a time when Louis the German’s Carolingian castle had fallen into ruin while serving as a quarry. The Fraumünster abbess was promoted to duchess (rank) by Emperor Frederick II in 1234. A mayor was nominated and citizens were delegated to mint coins. The Benedictine convent suffered political demise in the 14th century on account of Rudolf Brun, leader of Zurich’s 1336 guilds’ revolution and the city’s first independent mayor not nominated by the abbess. A Middle-High German form of Minnesang poetry. Manesse Codex was commissioned during the 14th century by Zürich’s Manesse family. Allegedly caused by the murdering of a four-year-old Zurich boy and taking of his blood, along with well-poisoning during the time of Black Death, the 1349 Zürich Massacre resulted in about 60 Jewish deaths by fire and their accomplices being banished from Zurich. The Swiss Confederacy required Zurich citizens to swear allegiance to the confederation starting on May 1, 1351. Zurich was thus incorporated as the Confederacy’s fifth member alongside Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden. From the Middle Ages (until 1848-Swiss federal state) Zurich (presiding canton) became the confederacy’s executive council and lawmaking body. Initiated by a dispute over Toggenburg territory, the 1440 Old Zurich War saw Zurich temporarily expelled from the confederacy yet readmitted in 1450. Zurich Grossmünster‘s main preacher, Ulrich Zwingli started Switzerland’s Protestant Reformation in 1519. In 1531 Christoph Froschauer printed the Zürich Bible. The Thirty Years’ War prompted a second ring of fortifications to be built around the city circa 1624. In 1648 Zurich proclaimed itself a republic. The 1798 Helvetic Revolution, along with the fall of the Kingdom of France’s Ancien Régime (political and social system), saw Zurich lose control of land and economic privileges it had gained. The city’s 17th-century ramparts were torn down at the end of 1839 (without ever having been besieged) following the Züriputsch (putsch by rural conservative population against city’s liberal rule). Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate was founded in Zurich (1845). The 1859 Treaty of Zurich (Austria, France, Sardinia) brought an official end to the Austro-Sardinian War. Significant 19th-century Zurich developments included the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn railway, the Hauptbahnhof (Zürich HB) main railway station, Bahnhofstrasse (Station Street) and the Zürich Stock Exchange. Relative to other European cities Zurich did not experience heavy bombardment during World War II, though the city was accidentally bombed by six USAAF B-24H bombers, which believed they were striking the German city of Freiburg im Breisgau.

Home to over 415,000 Zürchers, Zurich (not to be confused with Lake Zurich, Illinois) is Switzerland’s largest city and the canton of Zürich’s capital. Low tax rates coupled with canton-funding attract overseas business to the city. One of the world’s most livable cities, Zurich is also one of the most expensive. Also known as Zürichsee, Lake Zurich drops 446 feet (maximum depth). It’s not impossible for Lake Zurich to freeze over, though it’s considered sort of a phenomenon. The snow-capped, central-Swiss Alps (about 80 miles away) are visible from the city on clear days. Zurich’s climate is oceanic (four seasons). Warm summer highs average about 75 Fahrenheit (July) while January winters stay below freezing. Christmas makes for a great time to visit Züri.
