Nashville accommodations are some of the southern United States’ best. Before we get to Nashville accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Native Americans inhabited the Nashville area for an estimated 14,000 years. It is believed that the first settlers arrived during the Paleoindian period circa 13,000 BC. The Middle Cumberland Mississippian tribe, who built platform mounds, palisaded villages and stone box cemeteries, vanished from the area sometime around 1500 AD. From there, various tribes, including the Shawnee, Cherokee and Chickasaw, utilized the area as a hunting ground. In 1710, French trader Charles Charleville established a trading post named French Lick, which would later become Nashville. French Canadian fur trader Timothy Demonbreun, who utilized the French Lick trading post and lived in a cave alongside the Cumberland River, is thought to be the first non-native to inhabit the area permanently. Although John Buchanan may have arrived in the area shortly beforehand, James Robertson generally is regarded as negotiating the area’s first permanent European settlement, Fort Nashborough. Fort Nashborough was named after brigadier general Francis Nash, a Revolutionary War hero. In 1780, French Lick was officially renamed to Nashboro, which was in turn renamed to Nashville circa 1784. By 1800, Nashville had 345 residents, 136 of which were slaves. Nashville was incorporated in 1806 and became Tennessee’s capital in 1843. The city became a center for trade in tobacco, hemp, livestock and slaves, as well as a breeding and training ground for thoroughbred horses. Moreover, Nashville was considered one of the south’s wealthiest cities on account of its iron production. Nashville was not immune to adversity, however, as a mid-19th-century cholera epidemic took the lives of about 630 of 10,000 residents, including former president James K. Polk. About 700 free blacks in northern Nashville, and about 3,200 slaves in the city, lived in the area before the Civil War. Antebellum Nashville indeed had become a prosperous city by 1860, just prior to the war. A prized shipping port and railway center, however, Nashville became the first Confederate state capital to fall to Union forces in February 1862. The Union Army occupied the city throughout the war, and many slaves fled northward. The December 15-16, 1864 Battle of Nashville between the Union and Confederate States resulted in a Union victory and the disbanding of the Army of Tennessee. In 1872 and 1875, freedmen David Jones and Jo Reed were lynched in Nashville. Reed escaped, however, as the rope from which he had been hanged over a suspension bridge had broken. Cholera struck Nashville again in 1873. Suspected of assaulting two white sisters, brothers Ephraim and Henry Grizzard were lynched in early-1892. In 1893, the magazine Confederate Veteran began publication, and in 1894 the United Daughters of the Confederacy first organized. The Parthenon, an Athens Parthenon replica, was built in 1897. Founded on November 28, 1925 by George D. Hay, the Grand Ole Opry started out as a one-hour radio “barn dance” on WSM radio. Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack opened at the corner of Jefferson Street and 28th Avenue in 1945. On September 14, 1946, at a time when recording studios started emerging, Hank Williams visited the city and auditioned for the Grand Ole Opry, but was rejected. Six years later, Williams moved to Nashville and shared a house with singer Ray Price, who left soon thereafter due to Williams’ alcoholism. The musical style Nashville Sound had become popular by the late-1950s. Elvis Presley made his first recordings for RCA in Nashville circa January 10, 1956. One of the 20-century’s most influential vocalists, Patsy Cline moved to Music City in 1958 and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1964, Dolly Parton moved to Nashville, where she found immediate success as a songwriter alongside her uncle and songwriting partner Bill Owens. A destination for jazz and blues musicians, Jefferson Street was split by the federal government’s Interstate 40 in the late 1960s, a time when Johnny Cash moved to the city from Memphis. Jimmie Rodgers, regarded as the father of Country Music, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame circa 1970 alongside Hank Williams, Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart, Cindy Walker, Gene Autry, Johnny Bond and Bob Wills. The Tennessee Oilers played their first game at Vanderbilt Stadium in 1998, the same year the Nashville Predators were founded. A year later, Nissan Stadium opened, and the Oilers changed their name to the Tennessee Titans.

Tennessee’s capital and most populous city, Nashville is home to around 715,00 “Nashvillians”. Nashville is about 300 miles southwest of country music’s birthplace, Bristol, Tennessee. Music City’s skyline consists of 38 skyscrapers at 300 feet or higher. Under construction, Paramount Tower is slated to be Nashville’s tallest building at 750 feet (60 stories) by 2027. Probably the city’s most recognizable building is the AT&T Building, locally dubbed the “Batman Building” due to its resemblance of said comic book character. Several notable mansions are found throughout the Nashville area. These estates include the aforementioned Hermitage (Andrew Jackson’s – American general, 7th US President), country music singer Barbara Mandrell’s Fontanel Mansion and plantation owners Adelicia and Joseph Acklen’s Belmont Mansion. Established in 1873 and presently enrolling around 13,000 students, Vanderbilt University is found on the city’s southwest side. Defined by a pleasant, humid subtropical climate, Nashville’s high temperatures average around 90 ℉ in July, and 47 ℉ in January. Tree leaves do fall in Nashville, with mid-October through mid-November usually the best time for Fall foliage. Snowfall is possible in winter months, though typically is not heavy. Additional points of interest include Tennessee Tower Plaza, Lower Broadway (“Lower Broad” – honky tonk bars), Printer’s Alley (historic, cobblestone, printing industry alleyway – live music venues, nightclubs, bars), RCA Studio B (birthplace of “Nashville sound” background vocals / strings – built 1957) and Tennessee State Capitol. Local foods include meat and three (pick 1 meat, add 3-6 sides), hot chicken, steak, barbecue (pulled pork, glazed ribs, etc.), mac ‘n cheese, spicy beans, coleslaw, hamburgers, fish and chips, biscuits and chocolate. Honky tonk drinks typically involve whiskey, tequila, bourbon or vodka, while craft breweries are found throughout the city. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for Nashville accommodations that are sure to knock your boots off.
