An archipelagic state and country in South Asia, Maldives is located remotely in the Indian Ocean, about 1,700 miles southwest of India / Sri Lanka. Maldives is made up of 26 natural atolls (ring-shaped reefs, islands, or chains of islands formed of coral). Encompassing each of the over-1,000 Maldives islands, turquoise lagoon waters average 3-5 feet in depth. Deeper-blue Indian Ocean waters beyond the lagoons can drop to over 13,000 feet. Maldives’ natural ground levels average only 5 feet above sea level. As such, Maldives is earth’s lowest-elevated country.

Maldives accommodations are set mostly on their own small islands. Snorkeling and scuba diving are two prime examples of watersport activities. Maldives sea life includes various reef fish, tuna, sea turtles, octopus, squid, lobsters, dolphins and stingrays. Several shark species do exist in Maldives (reef sharks for example), though attacks on humans are rare. More dangerous than sharks in Maldives are stingrays. It’s best to try and keep your distance from stingrays by not swimming too close to the ocean floor. Stingrays are known to hide in sand to avoid predators, and their tails can act like daggers. Snorkeling and scuba diving generally are considered safe activities in Maldives. There are some sea creatures to be warry of, however. Apart from common stingrays, Maldives’ potentially dangerous sea animals include Lionfish (venomous), Stonefish (venomous), Blue-ringed Octopus (venomous), Blue-spotted Rays (venomous), Moray Eels, Sea Urchins (pointy), Triggerfish, Barracuda and Surgeonfish. Safe havens for some incredible reef fish, coral can be extremely sharp like a razor blade. Be sure to note any dive shop / watersport equipment rental agency tips / advice prior to entering the water. On land, modest dress is advisable while in public. As Maldives is a Muslim country, things like drugs, alcohol and dogs (pork hot dogs and actual dogs) are strictly prohibited in public places. It’s best to avoid Malé at night, and make sure not to wear shoes in homes or mosques. Maldives accommodations are some of the world’s best. Maldives has been inhabited for an estimated 2500 years. Scribed by early Maldives settlers, copperplate documents (Loamaafaanu) provide the best reference to early settlement. Of Indian origin, Gujaratis from Sri Lanka are thought to be Maldives’ first settlers sometime around 500 BC. Boatbuilding methods and silver punch-marked coins found in Maldives are evidence of a North Indian cultural influence. A Sri Lankan immigration to the area is documented in the 300 BC historical chronical Mahāvaṃsa. with legendary first settlers denoted as Divi and Dheyvi. Likely built of wood and palm fronds, early Maldives buildings have naturally perished. Apart from its legendary origins, Maldives was largely dominated by Buddhist and Islamic periods, which lasted until 1558, when the Portuguese set up a small garrison in the area. Unsuccessfully, the Portuguese attempted to establish Christianity on the islands. In turn, locals eventually drove out the Portuguese.  By the mid-17th century, the Dutch had established a hegemony, a political, economic and military predominance, in the area. Like the Portuguese before them, however, the Dutch too were driven out, albeit by British, not local, enforcement. Maldives remained a British crown protectorate from 1796 until 1952. Britain attempted to install a constitutional monarchy, but was met by an angry mob that publicly tore up the crown’s Constitution. Britain’s 853-year monarchy ended on March 15, 1968, when the Maldives parliament ruled in favor of a Republic. On November 11, 1968 an official Republic was established under president Ibrahim Nasir. Tourism commenced in the early-1970s with the opening of Kurumba Maldives resort on North Male Atoll.

Pronounced maal · deevz, Maldives is Asia’s smallest country by land area and population. Home to around 520,000 “Dhivehins”, Maldives is an isolated archipelago in the Arabian Sea. Maldives is home to underwater villas, which are multi-level luxury residences with a master bedroom submerged below sea level. These master bedroom “aquariums” provide panoramic views of marine life. Home to around 250,000 people, Malé is one of the world’s most densely-populated cities. Malé is also known as “King’s Island” due to its ancient royal dynasties, which  ruled from its central location. Malé generally isn’t frequented by tourists. If you do happen to find yourself there, however, be wary especially during protests and at night, as mugging  and pickpocketing are known to occur. Apart from not wearing shoes in houses or mosques, be sure not to hold hands or kiss publicly if in Malé. Home to a tropical monsoon climate, Maldives experiences hot and humid weather throughout the year. Average high temperatures stay in the upper 80s ℉. Maldives’ rainiest month typically is November, though December and May also receive above-average rainfall. Direct flights between the USA and Maldives do not exist. A common flight route from the USA to Maldives goes through Doha, Qatar. Direct flights to Velana International Airport are also possible from the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Poland, Austria, Russia and Turkey. Maldives local foods include garudia (soup – dried / smoked fish, rice, lime, chili), kandu kukulhu (traditional dish – tuna curry),  gulha (snack food – tuna and coconut dumplings), masroshi (stuffed fried dough snack), roshi (flat bread), tuna, rice, coconut, screwpine fruits, rihaakuru (tuna-based thick sauce), pickles, various curries and spicy sauces. Apart from tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi are the most common fish dishes. Alcoholic beverages are found commonly in most resorts, though keep in mind that the general population does not consume alcohol. Owing to British tradition, kalhu sai (black tea) and kiru sai (milk tea) are common local drinks.
