When traveling to Copenhagen there are some things to keep in mind. Though Copenhagen’s official language is Danish, English is spoken widely and fluently. “Please” and “thank you” are considered redundant. Cyclists (plentiful) must keep to the right, use the bike lane / hand signals and walk the bike on sidewalks / pedestrian crossings. A former army barracks in Christianshavn (neighborhood – across Inner Harbour from city center), Freetown Christiania is an autonomous community / anarchist micronation.

Freetown Christiania rules:

      • no photos (Pusher Street)
      • no vehicles
      • cannabis may be present,  though technically illegal in Denmark

Native to Denmark the Broholmer (Danish Mastiff) can weigh over 150 pounds. If fortunate enough to encounter a Broholmer out in public, keep in mind that they are friendly yet protective. Copenhagen accommodations are some of Scandinavia’s best. Before we get to Copenhagen accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Copenhagen Castle 1698
Copenhagen Castle 1698

Copenhagen has been inhabited since at least the Stone Age, as evidenced by substantial flint tool archaeological discoveries in the area. Further clues to the past include a merchant’s mansion (est. 1020 AD – Kongens Nytorv Square area), a church (est. 11th-century) and a graveyard (Strøget shopping area & Rådhuspladsen Square). Seasonal fishermen and merchants capitalized on the harbor’s bountiful herring runs during the 11th to 13th centuries. Danish historian, theologian and author Saxo Grammaticus wrote of Copenhagen as ‘Merchants Harbor’ in his 12th-century patriotic work, Gesta Danorum. In 1167 Bishop Absalon constructed a relatively small fortress near present-day Christiansborg Palace. Traditionally Absalon is considered as Copenhagen’s founder. Bishop Absalon constructed the fortress in response to Wendish (Germanic) pirate attacks. Wendish attacks eventually led to the construction of Copenhagen Castle in the late-14th century, around which time Copenhagen sustained repeated attacks by the Hanseatic League. Much like Amsterdam though unaligned with the Hanseatic League, Copenhagen benefitted from the herring trade. A personal union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden known as the Kalmar Union established Copenhagen as Denmark’s capital circa 1416. Eric of Pomerania, operating from Copenhagen Castle, ruled over the Kalmar Union from 1396 to 1439. On June 1, 1479 King Christian I, with Pope Sixtus IV’s approval, inaugurated the University of Copenhagen. During the 1520s-30s Reformation in Denmark Danish-based House of Oldenburg territories converted from Catholicism to Lutherism. Frederik I, who in opposition to Catholic-based Christian II supported Lutherism, successfully besieged Copenhagen in 1523, only to be supplanted by Christian II who was aligned with Malmo and Lübeck in 1536. From 1588 to 1648 under Christian IV Copenhagen grew. During this time the Tøjhus Arsenal and Børsen Stock Exchange were constructed. Christian IV traded favorably with the Netherlands’ East India Company. Sponsoring further ambitious building projects, Christian IV  built the Rosenborg Slot and the Rundetårn, which helped repel a major Swedish siege under Charles X circa 1658. By 1661 the joint Denmark-Norway major institutions, as well as its naval fleet and most of its army, were based in Copenhagen, which helped to assert its position as capital city. In 1711 Copenhagen was hit by the plague, which killed around 22,000 (roughly 33% of population). Similar to London Copenhagen was devastated by fire. Following the 1728 Copenhagen Fire reconstruction projects led to the building of Christiansborg Palace, Frederiksstaden (district), the Royal Theater, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Holmen naval base (expansion). A second fire in 1794 destroyed Christiansborg while prompting the construction of Højbro Plads, Nytorv and Gammel Torv squares. During the Napoleonic Wars British Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson disobeyed Admiral Sir Hyde Parker’s cease-fire signal and attacked a neutral Danish-Norwegian fleet anchored near Copenhagen. The First (1801) and Second (1807) Battles of Copenhagen occurred following the French Revolutionary Wars. Denmark-Norway and the United Kingdom battled due to trade and storage disputes (mostly timber trade & naval storage supplies). Both battles resulted in British victories along with the destruction of most of Copenhagen, 2,000 civilian deaths and Danish national bankruptcy. Hardship would not prevail forever, as a renewed Danish nationalistic spirit shone through during the 19th century. The Danish Golden Age brought forth new schools of painting (“Father of Danish painting” Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg), developments in Danish architecture (Neoclassical style) and romantic nationalist music. A new city hall, a new railway station and new housing developments helped distinguish Copenhagen as a leading industrial and administrative city by the 20th century. Denmark’s neutrality during the First World War had allowed it to trade prosperously with both Great Britain and Germany. Between World Wars Copenhagen saw both food shortages and new housing developments. In April 1945 Copenhagen, along with all of Denmark, was overrun and became occupied by Nazis. A British air raid known as Operation Carthage occurred on March 22, 1945, resulting in the local Gestapo’s headquarters / records being destroyed. The Nazi’s Copenhagen occupation would become critically wounded following the British air raid. Commanded by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, British troops liberated Copenhagen on May 8, 1945 while overseeing the surrender of nearly 30,000 Germans positioned around the city. The 1947 Finger Plan offered a new strategy for metropolitan  Copenhagen’s development. Freetown Christiania was founded in September 1971 at the former Bådsmandsstræde Military Barracks. During the 1990s more housing developments arose near Copenhagen’s harbor area.

Denmark’s capital and most populous city, Copenhagen is home to over 650,000 “Danes”. The Copenhagen service sector helps make the city one of Northern Europe’s largest financial centers. Founded as the Børsen circa 1625, Nasdaq Copenhagen has a market capitalization of around €620 billion. The Nordic countries’ largest airport, Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) saw over 30 million passengers in 2019. About 372 cruise ships carrying 840,000 passengers travel through Copenhagen Harbour annually. Famous fairy tale author Hans Christian Andersen lived in City of Spires for much of his life and is buried therein. Andersen’s character “The Ugly Duckling” is also Denmark’s national animal (elegant Mute Swan). Characterized by an oceanic climate, Copenhagen experiences unstable weather throughout the year. July high temperatures average in the low-70s °F while January winters hover just above freezing. June typically is Copenhagen’s rainiest month.
