Istanbul Turkey Hotels

Hotels in Istanbul offer some of the best Middle East accommodations in a destination nicknamed “The City on Seven Hills”. Known for its squares, bazaars, boutiques, mosques, museums and palaces, Istanbul historically was also known as Byzantium and Constantinople. While Ankara is Turkey’s official capital, Istanbul is considered the country’s cultural, economic and historical epicenter. Splashes of Asian, Middle Eastern and European culture help make this major Middle East city one of the most traveled destinations in the world. When traveling to Istanbul, its best to stay away from street meats. Also keep in mind that females must cover their hair when visiting a mosque. The Turkish lira is the official currency and the legal drinking age is 18 years. Big events include Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul International Music Festival, Istanbul Dance Festival, International Istanbul Film Festival, Pub Crawl Istanbul, İstanbul Coffee Festival, Akbank Jazz Festival, Istanbul Jewelry Show, WorldFood Istanbul, Solar IStanbul, Istanbul Puppet Festival and Istanbul Theatre Festival. Istanbul’s professional football clubs are Galatasaray S.K., which plays its games at Nef Stadyumu on the city’s north side, Fenerbahçe S.K., which plays at Ulker Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on the city’s southeast side, and Beşiktaş J.K., which plays centrally at Vodafone Park Arena. Hotels in Itanbul truly are some of the best in the Middle East. Before we get to hotels in Istanbul, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

Present-day Istanbul was named Constantinople in 330 AD by the Roman military ruler Constantine the Great. Constantinople remained the capital of the eastern Roman Empire for more than a thousand years. In 1453, the city fell to Sultan Mehmed II “the Conqueror” and the Ottoman Empire. Strategically situated between the Black and Mediterranean seas, Istanbul was a prominent trade center on the historic Silk Road trade route. The city controlled rail networks that connected Europe and the Middle East. Long-standing, historical culture-clashes can be evidenced to this day, in buildings such as the Hagia Sophia. Built as a Greek Orthodox church in 537 AD, the Hagia Sophia was captured and subsequently turned into an imperial Ottoman mosque in 1453. It has since operated as a museum, in which are displayed various potteries and mosaics, with the intention of its reestablishment back into a mosque.  Probably the greatest cause for Istanbul’s metropolitanism stems from the 1970s, when migrants found employment in the many new factories surrounding the city.

Dating to the 7th century BC, Istanbul, with a population estimated at around 15 million people, is the largest city in Turkey. Historically also known as  Byzantium and Constantinople, Istanbul today hosts nearly 13 million tourists annually. Tourists travel mostly to the city’s European side, where 90 percent of its hotels are located. Museums, bazaars, shopping districts, nightlife, sports and climate make this a bucket list Middle East destination. Summer high temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter averages around 43 degrees. One of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, the Grand Bazaar occupies over 7.5 square acres of the city and attracts up to 400,000 visitors per day. Istanbul’s major spice market since 1660, the Egyptian Bazaar is the place to go for spices, Turkish delight, dried fruit, souvenirs and more. Princes’ Islands, located 9 miles off the coast of city center, is a peaceful day-trip destination where virtually the only modes of transportation are bicycle and horse and cart. Kumkapı is home to around fifty seafood restaurants. Traditional food items include Meze, which are types of appetizers, Kebabs, Manti, a type of dumpling, Menemen, a scrambled egg dish and Kanafeh, which is a noodle-like pastry dessert. A popular alcoholic drink is Rakı, which is a potent, sweetened, anise-flavored spirit made from grape pomace. Ayran, a non-alcoholic, refreshing drink, is made using yogurt. Equipped with a little background information on the city, it’s time for hotels in Istanbul that are sure to help make for an outstanding Middle East trip.
