Hotels in New York City

Hotels in New York City

Hotels in New York City boast some of the world’s best accommodations in a locale nicknamed “The Big Apple”. Popularized by a 1970s tourist campaign, the city’s nickname makes sense when taking into account that New York’s state fruit is the apple. Known for its towering skyline, parks, financial exchanges, shopping, theater, restaurants, sports, pizza and fast-paced, 24-hour lifestyle, New York City is arguably the world’s best destination for a high-energy experience. Probably the best way to get around The Big Apple is via its subway, which is the world’s most complex subway system, so it would be wise to familiarize yourself with “the trains” prior to arrival. During rush hour, you’re likely better off traveling on foot than by car. Keep in mind that city drivers are far from coy. Truly, hotels in New York City are at the apex in luxury. With so many outstanding experiences to be had in NYC, it’s almost impossible to list them all concisely. Rather, they are best found as real-world examples below. Before we get you to hotels in New York City, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

11,000 years ago, the Wisconsin glaciation left bedrock at a relatively shallow depth, which would provide a foundation for Manhattan’s skyscrapers. Prior to colonization, the area was inhabited by the Algonquin Native Americans, who inhabited present-day Staten Island, Manhattan, the Bronx, parts of Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens and the Lower Hudson Valley. Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European to make a documented visit to the area in 1524, claimed the area for France, naming it Nouvelle Angoulême, or New Angoulême. In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson rediscovered the New York Harbor, believing that it might be an oceanic tributary. Juan Rodriguez, the first non-Native American to inhabitant the area, arrived in Manhattan as a representative of the Dutch circa late-1613. The Dutch then took control of the area, naming it New Netherland.

The English captured the area in 1664. In the early 1700s, New York became an important trade port, as well as a center for slavery. By 1730, roughly 42% of households held slaves. The Battle of Long Island, the United States’ first and largest American Revolutionary War battle, was fought in modern-day Brooklyn circa August 1776. Following the ARW’s American-Allied victory, New York became the United States’ first capital under the Constitution of the United States. Several significant events occurred during this time, such as President George Washington’s inauguration, the first assembly of the United States Congress and Supreme Court of the United States, and the drafting of the United States Bill of Rights, which took place at Federal Hall on Wall Street. Throughout the nineteenth century, New York City’s population would grow from 60,000 to 3.43 million.

Today New York City, the most heavily populated United States city, is home to around 8.4 million people. Home also to the Bronx Bombers, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, NYC is comprised of the five boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island. The city’s climate is considered Köppen , with warm, moist summers and cold, damp winters. New York City has one of the most impressive skylines in the world, with expansive architecture that represents a wide range of styles from distinct time periods.  Around 62 million tourists visit New York City per year. Major points of interest include Midtown ManhattanTimes Square, Unisphere, Brooklyn BridgeLower Manhattan, One World Trade CenterCentral Park, headquarters of the United Nations, Broadway, Little Italy, Greenwich Village, Bronx Zoo, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, Silicon Alley, New York University, Columbia University, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yankee Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Madison Square Garden and Citi Field. Popular foods include pizza, porterhouse steak, clam chowder, lobster fra diavolo, bagels, pastrami or corned beef sandwiches, hot dogs, cronut and cheesecake. Well-sought drinks are martinis, Bloody Marys, Cosmopolitans, craft beer and of course the Manhattan, which consists of whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters. Now that we have some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in New York City that will help provide for an unforgettable experience.

NoMad

NoMad’s name is derived from its location “North of Madison Square Park”. A relatively new nomenclature, the term NoMad has been in use since 1999. Historically, the NoMad area has been, among other things, a military parade ground. To this day it hosts the Veterans Day Parade. Once a meeting area for Gilded Age elite, as well as a mecca for tourists, shoppers and after-theater restaurant patrons, the area today is home to residences, upscale businesses, trendy restaurants and nightspots.
