Hotels in Zurich

Hotels in Zurich provide an elegant mix of old and new world luxury in a city known as the banking capital of Switzerland, and also for its architecture, museums, natural surroundings and Christmas markets. When traveling in Zurich, keep in mind that cars drive on the right side of the road and that the currency is the Swiss Franc. Roadways are very well maintained and public transportation is some of the world’s best. Switzerland has some of the most appealing scenic views anywhere. As such, a Swiss Travel Pass is highly recommended. Be sure to allocate some time to explore Lake Zurich. If you’re into skiing, Start Schlittelweg and Skilift Regensberg are two of the area’s better ski lifts. The city’s biggest events include Zurich Festival, Zurich Street Parade, Zurich Spring Festival, Zürich Openair, Zurich Caliente, Apples & Olives Musikfestival, Zuri Carneval, Zurich Film Festival, Sechselauten, Swiss IT Conference and Global Negotiation Conference. FC Zürich, one of Switzerland’s most successful professional football clubs, plays its games at Stadion Letzigrund located on the city’s northwest side. Indeed, hotels in Zurich are some of the best in Western Europe. Before we get to hotels in Zurich, let’s take a look at some background information to help you along the way.

The area that would become modern-day Zurich was founded in 15 BC by the Romans, who built a castellum on the Lindenhof. Latin is the earliest recorded language discovered in the area from a tombstone that translates into “Turicum tax post”, which refers to a Roman-imposed 2.5% tax on the Gauls. During the 5th century, the Germanic tribe Alemanni settled in the area. In 1218, Zurich gained relative independence from the Roman Empire.  Zurich in 1351 became a member of the Old Swiss Confederacy, a group of independent small states within the Holy Roman Empire. Tension between Protestants and Catholics led to the Wars of Kappel. Zurich proclaimed itself a republic in 1648, furthering itself from Roman influence. The Treaty of Zurich, which ended the Austro-Sardinian wars, was signed in 1859. Other important developments occurring in the 1800’s were the building of the first Swiss railway, the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn, and the founding of the Zurich Stock Exchange. During World War II, Zurich remained neutral, but was accidentally bombed by Allied forces.

Switzerland’s largest city, Zurich has a population of around 500,000 people. The city is located on the north-western end of Lake Zurich, a 25-mile long, 446-foot deep lake with clean, purified, water, public beaches and baths. Zurich’s official language is German, though English is also spoken widely. One of the world’s most livable cities, Zurich is an attractive haven for overseas business due to its low tax rates, canton funding subsidies and high quality of life. Zurich is a popular tourist destination for those who seek natural as well as man-made beauty. One of the wealthiest places in the world, Zurich is the Swiss banking epicenter. Scenes of guild architecture, seemingly endless blue skies and water, and distant snow-capped Swiss Alps all account for Zurich’s status as a surefire bucket list destination. Major points of interest include Fraumünster Church, Paradeplatz, Zürich Museum of Art, Zoological Garden, Botanical Garden, Zürich Opera House, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Theater am Neumarkt, Niederdorf, Langstrasse, Letzigrund Stadium and FIFA Headquarters. Popular foods are Zurcher geschnetzeltes, or sliced veal in gravy, Älplermagronen, a type of gratin, Birchermüesli, or muesli, cheese fondu, Rösti, which are shredded fried potatoes, Burli, aka bread rolls, Swiss chocolate and Swiss cheese. Beer and tea are two of the most popular drinks, while white wine is most often served with fondue. Now that we have a little background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Zurich that will help make for an amazing stay.

  1. Another awesome post. I love reading from your website. Switzerland is the most sought after destination for those who love travelling. I’ve never been to Switzerland before, but always wanted to go there.

Your post has motivated me to plan my travel to Zurich. You have offered great recommendations. I’ll make a note of them and have further discussion with my family members before making final plan. This post will help us as a great guide.

Thanks a lot for your efforts on creating this useful post.

  2. This is very enticing to consider traveling in luxury, but I can see the appeal.   Beautiful views, close to the main attractions. Thanks for including links to restaurants, clubs, gyms, shops, (and especially bakeries, my favorite in Europe).  If you are going to travel, take time off work, it makes sense to do it in style and really treat yourself.   What about prices?  I wish I could see what I was looking at in prices, maybe a general ballpark on your page before going to the booking site.    Thanks for showing us the value of staying in beautiful places when traveling to a beautiful place.

    1. Thank you Stacey. Will keep in mind your recommendation on pricing but keep in mind there are many factors involved and pricing is always changing. Of course it’s better to book more in advance when prices are lower. Glad you found the information of bakeries particularly useful. Happy travels to you!

  3. Hi, I must say that this article is very helpful and informative. I have been to Zurich 3 years ago with my family and that city is a wonderful place to stay. I actually was in a cheap apartment but now when I look at these images I must spare some money to rent such nice penthouse. My wife will be amazed when I show this to her.

    1. Hi Daniel, thank you! Glad to hear that you’ve been to Zurich and that you’re considering going back. Wish wishes and happy journeys to you and your family!

  4. We are working on an itinerary for our upcoming European holiday and from what we are seeing here Zurich looks absolutely stunning. The accommodations you’ve showcased here are magnificent.

Any thoughts on how long we should stay in the actual city to get the full experience? We want to make the most of our time there but there are so many other awesome places to explore too…

    Thanks so much!

    1. Thank you Judy, Zurich is definitely an amazing city for your European trip! How long you stay in Zurich really depends on how long you plan on staying in other places and how much time you have overall. Zurich would be a fine choice to spend at least 20% of your time. Hope your European trip is an amazing one, happy travels 😁

  5. These look absolutely gorgeous!  I am ready to go now! LOL.  This is great information especially for someone like me who doesn’t travel very much and needs the help finding where to go.  This gave me information on lodging, eating, shopping, everything.

Thank you so much for the help and the great display of places to go. Hope to see you there!

    1. Angela thank you so much for the comments. So glad you found them helpful and inviting. Let’s go! 😉

  6. Quite the luxurious accommodations! I hadn’t given much thought about traveling to Zurich in the past, but it looks like it’s now one to add to the list! It’s also very nice to have the nearby items of interest located underneath each accommodation. It would be a great experience to rent one of these spaces with a few friends and really treat yourself during your trip.

    1. Hi Haleigh thank you so much for the comments! One of the best things about a penthouse is that you can travel in a group and split the costs, so you are spot-on there. Hope your travels are amazing out there!

  7. We have been planning a family trip to Zurich for a couple of years now. So I decided to also take a look at the Penthouses you had listed for this city. And this time I had no difficulty to make up my mind. It was quite obvious for us that our best option was Limmatquai 82, 1. Zurich Old Town.

Thank you very much for researching about all these penthouses and bringing us the very best!

    1. Thank you again Henry! Thrilled to hear that you found a favorite once more. Hope to see you again soon!

  8. Ever since I was a kid I had this innate desire to visit Switzerland. And I think it’s not just me. There are millions around the world who would want to visit Switzerland at least once in their lifetime.

You have compiled a great list of penthouse options, which will surely motivate anyone reading your post to visit Zurich, Switzerland.

And believe me, it has triggered my desire to put my visit to Switzerland on top of my bucket list.

Thanks a lot for this amazing post

    Nick

  9. Oh I do wish that your site didn’t keep popping up. When it does, no matter how I try i can’t resist it. And without fail whenever I open it I get very jealous.

Once again you present an amazing city in a style that many never think is affordable. I love the penthouse at Naphtastrasse, it looks totally amazing.

Thanks once again for making me green with envy.

  10. Zurich is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It boasts of great event centres and it is used as a business hub for most world meetings so, it is only normal for it to have the best hotels available. To be honest, I really like the fact that you have simplified this post here and thank you so much for sharing herd. Thumbs up to you for sharing here

    1. Zurich is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the world Emman and thanks for pointing it out. Business is a big draw and as such hotels in Zurich Switzerland are indeed some of the best out there. You’re welcome and glad you found value in the post.

  11. My colleagues regularly travel to Zurich for business and Board meetings and have, until now, been paying “top end” prices, albeit through online booking, at 5* hotels.  Your site is something I will be referring them to, as you suggest an excellent choice of different hotels but at slightly more accessible prices.  Furthermore, you offer some helpful general travel advice on what you can do in Zurich.  I notice that Switzerland, like many countries in the region has been badly hit by Covid 19.  Once things return to normal or as near as normal do you think the hotels you have suggested will be offering incentives to attract customers to return?

    1. Thank you for the comments Trevor and glad to see that you found these hotels in Zurich Switzerland prices to be competitive. Covid-19 presents an opportunity for hotels to get things inside more pristine than ever before, and once the virus passes, hotels would do well to offer incentives like you’ve pointed out, and most likely will. Great question and stay safe out there!

  12. Hi, Thank you so very much for your amazing Article. Personally, I am planning to go on Holiday this Summer and with your amazing Content, you have just directed me to where I will spend my Holiday. Your great list of the penthouse compiled is a great encouragement. I must visit Switzerland this Summer. Thank you.

    1. Hi Martha. Hopefully you will get to visit one of the above hotels in Zurich Switzerland as soon as possible this summer. It would make for an outstanding summer trip indeed. Two events that you might check out if they are confirmed are Zürifäscht Festival, which occurs early in July, or Street Parade Zurich, which happens in early August. Hopefully the world is back on track by then, but for now during Covid-19 it’s a great time to dream and prepare for something like a summer trip 🙂

  15. Just looking at the pictures of the hotels here and the services they offer really gives me some positive stress, it just pushes me to want to work harder. Hahah the prices are quite expensive for a school kid like me but this is definitely the life I want to live, a life staying in the Dolder Grand and having a view of that breath taking lake. One day I will get to stay one one of these 4K price hotels on my visit to Zurich. Thank you for this really interesting article and beautiful pictures room

  16. Zurich looks so beautiful and it’s definitely on my list of places that I want to visit. There is so much history to learn and see up close. I love the luxe apartments for rent in Zurich! It’s great to see what the cost is when split out per person with a larger group — the big splurge suddenly seems very affordable and perfect for a girls trip to beautiful Zurich!

    1. Aly, hotels in Zurich Switzerland would make for a great girls trip for sure as there is no lack of spas, restaurants and shopping. Also, if you’re into natural beauty there is that as well. Thanks for the comments and happy travels to you and the ladies!
