Hotels in Stockholm

Hotels in Stockholm offer outstanding accommodations in a city nicknamed “Beauty on the Water”. Known for its parks, architecture, museums, attractive inhabitants, award-winning restaurants and quality of life, Stockholm is located on Sweden’s southeast coast. Cobblestone streets and deep-orange buildings are fixtures of this major Nordic city. A port city on the Baltic Sea, Stockholm is positioned across the water from Finland to its northeast, Estonia to its east and Latvia to its southeast. By way of the Gulf of Finland, Stockholm is accessible to St. Petersburg, Russia. Made up of 14 islands and over 50 bridges, Beauty on the Water indeed has a intriguing Viking history. Keep in mind that English is widely spoken, that walking around is advisable, and that many museums have free admittance. Alcohol is not for sale in supermarkets, and must be bought at a government-owned Systembolaget. While you might not find Swedes smiling back at you often, they are generally quite polite and gracious. Stockholm’s currency is the Swedish Krona and the drinking age is 18 years old. Stockholm events include Stockholm International Film Festival, Stockholm Jazz Festival, Lollapalooza Stockholm, Popaganda Festival, IMPRA Jazz Festival, Stockholm Marathon, Stockholm Kulturfestival, Stockholm Music & Arts Festival, A Taste of Stockholm, Midsummer and Stockholm Folk Festival. Hotels in Stockholm are some of the best in all of Scandinavia. Before we get to hotels in Stockholm, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

Prior to the Ice Age’s end circa 8000 BC, many people had migrated southward from the Stockholm-area to escape the cold.  Around 1000 AD when temperatures rose, many Vikings migrated back northward to the present-day Stockholm area. Old Town was built by Vikings near Lake Mälaren at around this time. Agnafit was the Norse word pertaining to where Lake Mälaren met the Baltic Sea. The first known written reference to Stockholm dates to 1252, when iron was mined in Bergslagen. The oldest surviving Swedish chronicle, the Eric Chronicals, attributes Stockholm’s finding to Birger Jarl. In the summer of 1187, Birger Jarl build the city to protect against Karelian invasions following the pillage of Sigtuna. Present-day Old Town was built around the mid-13th century. From 1296 to 1478, Stockholm’s City Council numbered 24 members, half of whom were German-speaking burghers. Strategically positioned on the Baltic Sea, Stockholm traded with and took culture from Lübeck, Hamburg, Gdańsk, Visby, Reval, and Riga. Relations between the Danish Kings and the Kalmar Union were strong during the 15th century.  In 1634, Stockholm became the official capital of the Swedish empire. Thereafter, it was inflicted by plague in 1710, expanded both geographically and technologically in the 19th century, and became more modernized during the second half of the 20th century.

Sweden’s capital and the Nordic countries‘ most populous urban city, Stockholm is home to around 1 million Swedes. One of Europe’s fastest-growing regions, the city is estimated to grow in population to about 2.5 million by 2024. Stockholm’s climate is oceanic. High temperatures range from around 75-degrees Fahrenheit in July, to around freezing in January. Around summer solstice time, the sky darkens near nautical twilight, casting a brilliant blue coloration after sunset. Many of Sweden’s cultural institutions can be found in Stockholm, including three Worlds’ Heritage Sites: Drottningholm Palace, Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery) and Birka, a Viking Age trading center. Major points of interest include Old Town, Skeppsbron, Stockholm City Hall, Hötorget buildings, Ericsson Globe, Stockholm Palace, Stockholm Stock Exchange, Stockholm Observatory, Stockholm School of Economics, Djurgården, Riddarholmskyrkan, Vasa Museum, Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet, Skansen, Royal Dramatic Theatre, Royal Swedish Opera, Stockholm City Theatre, Gröna Lund, Friends Arena and Stockholms Olympiastadion. Popular foods are kanelbulle (cinnamon buns), meatballs, herring, godis (candy), husmanskost (home-cooked food) and toast skagen (a type of toast with shrimp). Drinks include vodka, beer and wine. Now that we have some background information on the city, it’s time for hotels in Stockholm that will help make for an unforgettable trip.

Bake Me A Wish!

So there they are, hotels in Stockholm that will help make for a memorable getaway. We hope you have found this information helpful and most of all, that you enjoy your time in Sweden!

15 Replies to “Hotels in Stockholm”

  1. Your site looks great. I was interested in making a travel affiliate website and offering visitors to connect from website to trip advisor or booking .com this has given me more ideas. Awesome content and beautiful images. I am still trying to figure out how to get all the links in however, I really like how you added the penthouse by city from Europe to South America to the USA and Cancun Mexico page looks really good with added pics very detailed.

The about page really got my attention where you can sit in the room and watch the fish from the window. That gives the visitor to the website a visual that would bring them excitement prior to them visiting that vacation spot.

  2. I stayed last in Stockholm last summer. Had an amazing time there. I enjoyed visiting the most famous attractions + I enjoyed some nice cycling throughout the city. I’ve never stayed in any of those hotels you listed but I will have them in mind when I am next time in Sweden. I’ve stayed in Helstens Maalmgard hotel. It is a nice boutique hotel and the prices start at 150 EUR per night.

    Really lovely website.

    Strahinja.

  3. I’ve always wanted to visit Sweden and Stockholm in particular. Also, Gothenburg. Some cool looking hotels you covered for Stockholm. Do you know which one is closest to the historic part of Stockholm? I really want to explore the history and culture of Sweden. Also, do you know of any tours from Stockholm that visit places from the Viking Age? That would be so cool.

  4. Hey thank you for the awesome post!  I have been trying to figure out our next family vacation out of the country and Sweden was one of the countries that is on my radar!  I really like the Nordic Light Hotel, and the suite price is actually pretty decent in my opinion.  I like how it is close to a palace!  That would be pretty awesome to see!

  5. Awesome. I an automotive engineer and next year i will go to visit Volvo factory in Goteborg – Sweden.

On my visit plan I want to go in Stockholm to visit this beautiful city. Because is my responsibility to find a place where to stay with my work colleagues, i will take my favorite one. I see here the Nordic light Hotel which looks great. There’s a lot of positive review that makes me to definitely choose it. The design of the hotel, the rooms and the food looks fantastic.

Thanks for this , you really helped me.

  6. Hi there,

Wonderful article! I’m actually planning to make a trip to Scandinavia next year, so I’ll probably be in Sweden for about a week. Stockholm will be my last stop. This article gave me a good insight on the hotels in Stockholm, so thanks for that! This really helped me out.

    Have a great day!

  7. The old town penthouse looks great. You can literally wake up with the sunlight every morning. Plus, everything is so close, you can literally walk there. And we can afford it, so that’s perfect!

I’m going to Stockholm with 4 of my friends and I’m pretty sure that’s the place we’ll stay. Thanks for the recommendation!

  8. My favourite one is definitely the one from Second home apartments. Not only because I love the apartment, but also because it has a comedy club and an art gallery! And they even have a bar called Loch Ness. How much cooler could it be?

It may be a little more expensive than most of them, but it’s totally worth it.
