Hotels in Jerusalem

Hotels in Jerusalem offer wonderful accommodations in a destination nicknamed “The Holy City”. Probably the world’s most historically significant, holiest and fought-after city, Jerusalem was once considered the center of the world. Known for its synagogues, churches, mosques, tunnels, markets and museums, Jerusalem centers Israel between the Dead Sea to its east, and the Mediterranean Sea to its west. Located in Jerusalem’s central-eastern section, Old City is the site of many ancient and holy structures such as Western Wall, Dome of the Rock and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Built nearly 2,000 years ago, demolished in 1009, and rebuilt in 1048, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre marks the site where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.  Jesus’ birthplace, Bethlehem, is about 5.5 miles south of Jerusalem. When traveling to The Holy City, keep in mind that modest clothing should be worn, especially in religious areas. Expect potentially heightened security while traveling through the airport. It’s a good idea to keep airport paperwork secure and nearby at all times. Jerusalem’s currency is the Israeli new shekel, cars travel on the right-hand side of the road and the drinking age is 18 years old. Road signs are generally found with Hebrew, English and Arabic lettering. Hotels in Jerusalem are some of the best in the Middle East. Before we get to hotels in Jerusalem, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Originally the City of David circa 1000 BCE, Jerusalem has been inhabited for over 5,000 years. According to Jewish indigeneity to the land and a Palestinian modern, though longstanding, presence in the area, both Jewish and Palestinian nationalists claim a right to the city. Jerusalem’s historical periods are extensive and include the Canaanite, the Egyptian New Kingdom, the Roman, the Byzantine, the Crusader and the Ottoman empires. A resilient city, Jerusalem has been destroyed at least twice during its existence, and attacked 52 times. The Holy City is the place where Jews branched off from the Canaanite peoples to center their religion on Yahweh, where Jesus Christ was crucified according to the New Testament, and where Muhammad made his Night Journey to heaven according to the Quran.

Home to nearly 1 million people, Jerusalem sits on a plateau between the Mediterranean and Dead Seas. Surrounding the city, which is shared between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, are the Judean Mountains.  Jerusalem has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with average high temperatures at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit in August, and about 53 degrees Fahrenheit in January. Major points of interest include St. Elijah Monastery, Mamilla Mall, Tower of David, Old City Walls, The Garden Tomb, Temple Mount, al-Aqsa MosqueJaffa Road, Israel Museum, Bible Lands Museum, Rockefeller Museum, Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, International Convention Center and Teddy Stadium. Popular foods include falafel, pita, hummus, bagels, halva (a type of sweet candy), shawarma, kanafeh (a noodle-like pastry dessert) and bourekas (a pastry). Drinks are arak (a potent anise-flavored liquor), Tubi 60 (a citrus liquor), sachlav (a vanilla and rose-water scented creamy drink), limonana (frozen mint lemonade) and iced coffee. With a little background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Jerusalem that will help make for a wholly, holy experience.

  2. Just reading this and looking at the pictures transports me right to Jerusalem!  The city has such a rich and vibrant history that it is one that I have always dreamed of visiting.  I love your choice on penthouse and apartment-style lodgings would be just great for small groups of friends to be able to tour around together (or apart) and still have a central home to come back to at the end of the hot day.  Excellent article!

  7. Hi

I got to admit Jerusalem is a place that I would like to visit, which its beauty and many historical places to have a good look around. You have presented some of the most beautiful hotels that a person would like to stay in. The prices seem resaonable, especially if you are travelling in a large group  and how long your stay is.  I bet you have to stay a week to take all the sights in and what a week that would be.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction of hotels in this important City.
