Hotels in Amsterdam

Hotels in Amsterdam offer enchanting accommodations in a city nicknamed “Venice of the North”. Known for its canals, its museums, its festivals, its eye-catching buildings, its coffee (marijuana) shops and its Red Light District, Amsterdam is one of a kind. Amsterdam’s best festivals include Light Festival, Tulip Festival, Chinese New Year, Christmas Markets, Amsterdam Coffee Festival, Mystic Garden, Amsterdam Music Festival, Awakenings Festival, The DGTL Festival, Music On Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event, Dekmental, DLDK: Don’t Let Daddy Know, Mysteryland, Terschelling Oerol Theatre Festival and Pride Festival. One the world’s best football clubs is Ajax, which plays its games at Johan Cruijff ArenA on the city’s south-east side. When visiting Amsterdam, keep in mind that there are lots of cyclists on the road, that you must not smoke cannabis in public, that you should secure your personal belongings especially in public places, and that you should not take photos of Red Light District windows. It is considered rude to speak while chewing gum, to leave the table during dinner and to walk in bicycle paths. Truly, hotels in Amsterdam are some of the most exciting you’ll find anywhere. Before we get to hotels in Amsterdam, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

A deterrent to early settlement in the pre-Amsterdam area was its location in what used to be wet peatland. As early as the late 10th century, this peatland called Amestelle began to be developed by inland farmers, the most notable of which was the Van Amstel family. The All Saint’s Flood of 1170 ironically aided in the creation of Amsterdam, causing the Amstel river to be more active and thus draining excess water more quickly, resulting in drier banks. This made the downstream Amstel mouth more attractive to permanent habitation. Amsterdam’s name derives from the Dam originally located on the Amstel River.

The capital and most populous municipality in the Netherlands, Amsterdam has a population of around 850,000 people. A seaport city, Amsterdam has more than 100 kilometers of canals, 1,500 bridges and roughly 90 islands. An inviting time to visit Amsterdam is in the summer, when temperatures average 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Hiding from the Nazis for 761 days, the German-Dutch diarist of Jewish heritage Anne Frank wrote The Diary of Anne Frank, which can be seen to this day at The Anne Frank House. Two of the most famous and talented Amsterdam residents were Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and Vincent Van Gogh. Located in Venice of the North’s historic city center, The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, now Euronext Amsterdam, is the world’s oldest stock exchange. Points of interest include the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Heineken Brewery, the red-light district (if only for a day-time glimpse) and cannabis coffee shops. Amsterdam foods include the Stroopwafel, which is a wafer cookie, Dutch pancakes, which are thinner, crepe-like pancakes often topped with fruit, herring, cod, Gouda cheese, Kibbeling, or battered fish, Oliebol, which is a type of fried dough, Stamppot, which is essentially mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables and Rijsttafel, an Indonesian-inspired array of small plates. Drinks include Jenever, a juniper-flavored liquor, vodka, Advocaat, which is a thicker, brandy-infused custard (much like eggnog), and of course beers such as Amstel and Heineken. Now that we have a little background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Amsterdam that are sure to amze.

So there they are, hotels in Amsterdam that are sure to help make for an unforgettable experience. We hope you have found your perfect Amsterdam accommodation and most importantly, that you enjoy your time in the Netherlands!

38 Replies to “Hotels in Amsterdam”

  1. Amsterdam in general is one place I want to visit regardless along with The Hague. But for me, the Garden View looks like a keeper here, especially if I’m only with a few people. Seems like it’s located around a lot of culture, too, especially if those Italian restaurants deem to be authentic. Mi Sueno would be a cool place to visit, too, since I’ve never tried Argentine cuisine before, so that would be quite the experience. For my personal tastes, it’s the ideal spot in Amsterdam.

    1. Hi Todd. Thank you for pin-pointing your favorite accommodation. Appreciate the comment and wish you all the best in your travels!

  2. My choice would be the Canal View Penthouse. I don’t travel at that financial level, but I would choose that one for the most charming view.
What a way to go…All these accommodations are grand, spacious and comfortable looking. They definitely would be fabulous for extended stays.
Amsterdam is a fascinating city and one might not spend much time in a hotel or penthouse, yet these are sumptuous options.
A week in each would be marvelous!

    1. Thank you for the comments Dancinscot! One of the best things about booking a penthouse is, when traveling in a group and splitting the cost, it can be affordable. Generally speaking, penthouses will feature 2 to 3 bedrooms. Best wishes and happy travels!

  3. Wow what a great article. What took my eye immediately was the fact that your article is based around one of my favourite cities, so I was obviously drawn in.

The guide and places to see is (I think) very accurate, and indeed I know, and have stayed at one or two of the hotels in your piece. Though i have to say that i didn’t stay in the penthouse suites in any. to be honest I had never even considered it as I, (and I guess most people) have always presumed that the penthouse was the exclusive abode of either the rich, or the famous(or both).

I have to say that i am very pleased to be educated to the contrary by you, and a penthouse suite will deffinately be on the to-do list the next time I am in Amsterdam.

  4. What beautiful places these are!  I would have to take some time with them to figure out which was my favorite.  It would be a delight to stay in one of these while visiting Amsterdam.

Years, ago, I did visit Amsterdam.  I imagine it is changed, now, and would love to go back and see it again.  If I do, I’ll be in touch, because I’d like to find out more about the penthouses.  I notice you do not mention price.  Is this one of those situations where if you have to ask, you can’t afford it?  I hope not.

I especially remember the rijsttafel, the Indonesian feast that is so popular in Amsterdam.  You are served numerous small Indonesian dishes which you then sample and enjoy.  It’s a fabulous way to have a meal.  I’d love to sit down at another of those feasts!

Thanks for providing such an interesting article about a way to make Amsterdam even more enjoyable.

  5. I’ve been to Amsterdam a few times and it´s quite a fascinating city. I have visited some of the top attractions you mentioned, such as the Anne Frank house, the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum.

I would go for Penthouse Canal by Harbour Suites as an accommodation option. I just love the room decor on the image. A kitchen with a dishwasher sounds handy, and this penthouse is in a central location.

  6. Thanks again for these good travel recommendations. They all look very luxurious. I like the one with the black walls and there was one was kind of a colorful design that looks cool.

Like I said in my other post you know the first thing I want to know is everything about the gym and then the second thing I want to know is where are the meetings. After that I guess I want to know like where are the nature trails so I could go hiking. Like I said in my other reply I don’t drink or do caffeine or any of that kind of stuff but you know I could potentially enjoy the atmosphere of a nice restaurant.

Usually I am not the person who wants to go to restaurants because I eat very carefully but the people I am with might want to go so I would go just to be with them.

Oh yeah I don’t have children now but I guess if I had children then it would be important to me that they had fun stuff to do.

  7. I have only been to Europe once or should I say England.  We stayed in a pretty nice hotel.  I would love to the Netherlands.  The views and archeticture look incredible.  I would need to save some serious cash in doing one of these things.  Or I can take a group of friends and we can split the cost.  This would be a once in a lifetime kind of thing for me.

  8. Hi, looks like a  good place to go and check out in the summer. It looks like that Penthouse is in a good location to be checking everything out. And getting a good feel for the vacation experience. I think a person would want to go for about a week if not more. Because there is just a lot of interesting and entertaining things to go see.

  9. Been looking for a very thorough guide on picking a very comfortable accommodation during my three weeks long stay in Amsterdam and I think this article definitely has some fancy recommendations. I think the Waalstraat Penthouse would be just perfect for my needs as I would need some space and entertainment throughout. It’s seems cozy and the price is relatively affordable. Thanks

  10. Thanks for delivering great alternatives to places to stay when getting to Amsterdam. Among your list, Keizersgracht Penthouse it’s my favorite. I like luxury places to stay when traveling, but I also like warms spaces.

Being one of the most centric options and its price is quite low.  Thanks for a great post!

  17. Thank you for another great list of recommendations! I always find great tips where to stay, when I visit your site and you once again did not disappoint.

My favorite pick from your list for Amsterdam would be Van der Valk Hotel Penthouse, because of the view. It’s stunning! And the price is perfect, considering what you get + everything is quite close. So I’m saving it for when I visit Amsterdam the next time (I often fly to the Caribbean through their airport and usually stay for a day or two in town before flying over Atlantic).

While White Luxury Penthouse looks nice, I would be afraid to stay there – I would feel too much of a pressure to leave everything as white as it should be 😊

    1. Katja great choice in Valk Hotel Penthouse and good point about White Luxury Penthouse, lol. Glad you liked the post!

  18. Hey, I always enjoy your article while reading. Today I know about Hotels in Amsterdam Netherlands. While reading I know that Amsterdam, the capital and most populous municipality in the Netherlands, has a population of around 850,000 people. If we get a chance to visit Amsterdam. We will stay in Htel Penthouse Apartment or Dikker & Thijs Hotel Penthouse Suite . I hope I will  come soon.

    1. Parveen Htel Penthouse Apartment or Dikker & Thijs Hotel Penthouse Suite are both great choices. Thanks for the comments and nice to see you again!

  19. Hi, these are really cool places. I have to say I would choose to stay near the Leidseplein given the choice. I think the location is the most important aspect when staying in a city. Amsterdam is a great city with lively fun nightlife. Many years ago when I lived near Amersterdam we often went into the city for the club scene at weekends. But there are many other great places and experiences Amsterdam has to offer. The last time I was there I picked up some really cool original art from a street market. I used to love going into the city too on Queens Day. I know it all so well. thanks, Andy

  20. Amsterdam has been on my bucket list for so many years and this post has really made me more determined to get there once we can travel more freely. I know that many of the European cities are very expensive, but sharing cost in a penthouse is a brilliant way to reduce the cost per person. I love all the suggestions and tips for what to do in the area you are staying and will bookmark this post.
