Hotels in San Francisco

Hotels in San Francisco provide haute accommodations in a destination with nicknames  that include “Frisco” and “The Golden City”. Arguably the most iconic bridge in the world, The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco to Marin County, California.  A popular tourist destination, Frisco also has been home to big-tech names such as Twitter, Salesforce and Square. Keep in mind that San Francisco’s streets are steep. As such, sneakers are better than heels if you plan to brave sidewalks. Keep in mind too that one-way streets, steep hills and strict traffic enforcement can make traveling by vehicle challenging.  The area’s top events include San Francisco Independent Film Festival, San Francisco International Arts Festival, San Francisco Silent Film Festival, Carnaval San Francisco, SF Jazz Festival, Fillmore Jazz Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, North Beach Festival, Noise Pop, Union Street Festival, Stern Grove, Second Sky Festival, Treasure Island Music Festival, Mosswood Meltdown, Audiotistic Bay Area, Nihonmachi Street Fair, Castro Street Fair, SF Sketchfest, Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival and San Francisco Marathon. San Francisco’s professional sports teams are the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors. Hotels in San Francisco are some of the finest you’ll find along the United States’ western coast. Before we get to hotels in San Francisco, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Incorporated on April 15th, 1850, San Francisco has revealed evidence of human habitation in the area dating to 3000 BC. First known inhabitants were the Yelamu people, who settled largely at Candlestick Point. On November 2, 1769, Don Gasper de Portoia became the first European to arrive in the area. Within seven years the Spanish had established a stronghold through “missions”. After the Spanish, Mexico took control of the area, only to lose it to commodore John Drake Sloat and the United States in 1846. Shortly after the United States took control of the area, and as a result of the Mexican-American War, an influx of  treasure hunting “forty-niners” ensued. Apart from gold was the discovery of silver in Nevada, which accounted for a further boom. Wells Fargo, Levi Strauss and Domingo Ghirardelli became big names in business, capitalizing on demand brought forth by gold seekers. Chinese and other Asian immigrants accounted for 8% of the city’s population by 1870. Cable cars and Victorian houses came to further define the area. In 1906, a devastating earthquake took out more than three-quarters of the city’s infrastructure and accounted for almost half a million homeless. San Francisco was relatively unfazed by the Great Depression of the 1930s. During this time, the Golden Gate Bridge was built, and Alcatraz island was turned into a federal penitentiary, housing the likes of Al Capone and “The Birdman of Alcatraz” Robert Franklin Stroud. The city played an important role in World War II, as it became the Pacific Operatives’ primary port of embarkment, as well as the location where the United Nations Charter was drafted and signed. In 1951, the war with Japan officially ended by way of the Treaty of San Francisco. During the 1960s, the area attracted America’s counterculture, known as “hippies”.  San Francisco’s most influential bands have included The Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Metallica, Journey, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, and Green Day.

The fourth most populous city in California, with nearly a million inhabitants, San Francisco covers an area of only fifty square miles. Attributed to the gold rush of the mid-1800s, The Golden City is rooted in an entrepreneurial spirit that holds to this day.  Northern California’s cultural, commercial, and financial center, San Francisco has cool summers that average in the mid to high sixties, and mild winters that average in the high fifties. Popular points of interest include Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Union Square, Nob Hill, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Oracle Park, Levi’s Stadium and Chase Center. Popular foods are shellfish, which includes everything from sea snails to crab to shrimp, and sourdough bread, which is considered a staple. Craft beer lovers will find the city welcoming, while martinis have been around since its beginnings. Now that we have some background information on the city, it’s time for hotels in San Francisco that will help make for an unforgettable experience.

  1. Thankyou for this article. I hope people are finding your website and renting the great pent-houses you have here. My favorite, just going by looks, was 900 North Point Square. I’ve lived in the United States my whole life and I never went to California. So, that is something I will have to do. I’m on the other side of the country, in New York, but it’s a pretty fast plane ride to go there.

Huntington Hotel really stood out, due to all the red coloring. It looks very luxurious.

I also liked Hotel Zeppelin because of the bricks and the “rustic” look. I think that’s the word for it, anyway. Thanks!

  2. Very good synopses of some beautiful luxury accommodations! I especially like the Hotel Drisco because of the sights to be seen within a very short distance. So many places and such great scenery everywhere! All the hotels you covered sound great, though, and it would be hard to narrow it down to just one for a vacation or even a short visit. Thanks for providing the information.

  3. Thank you so much for this nice post, I find it really helpful and informative, I have heard a whole lot about San Francisco ranging from it been a populous city in California to the many luxurious hotels all around. I think I will visit on of the places you mentioned in my next vacation.

  4. Traveling is nice but having a great place to rest your head is absolutely beautiful. I must commend the fine suggestions of hotel you have given here and frankly these are the best I have come across so far in my search. A group of friends are traveling to San Francisco and have sought for my assistance in getting a good place to stay. I’ll love to give them these suggestions as it matches thier description of a nice place they explained to me. Best regards.

  5. Wow all these places look so beautiful to spend a night in. Thank you for sharing this review on the best hotels in San Francisco. Is San Francisco a safe place to go for visitors? I have never been there but have been thinking about travelling there. Where would you suggest a first time visitor to go in San Francisco?

    1. Hi Nice Gal Nikki and thank you for the comments. San Francisco is generally pretty safe, but as with any major city there can be crime. Just make sure to avoid The Tenderloin area to the south, and stay clear of Oakland. Be sure to visit Nob Hill and Union Square as a first time visitor. Hope that helps 🙂

  6. I visited the beautiful city of San Francisco just four week ago. It was exciting and it took a lot of energy to keep up with the pace of the city. I’m a country bumpkin so the hussle of a big city is vastly different in comparison. So, next time I visit the city, I will be looking for a hotel that blocks all the noise of the streets, but is still central to the city. The hotel we stayed in while we were there had a great retro vibe, and was over a hundred years old. However, I am somebody who is far more comfortable and better rested when I can re-energise for the next days antics, in a space that can block out all noise but still have the views of the city. Is this asking too much? What would you recomend?

  7. San Francisco has always been my long lost big city to which I always wish to explore for long. Thankfully you have added a touch of luxury for me concerning what to lockout for when I am heading to this place. All the hotels you have mentioned here are all top notch and would be definitely a top luxurious treatment to be in Amy of them. I particularly like the hotel Drisco. It looks very elegant

  8. Oh, this is great. Your post is needed to be seen by many people so they can check out this many options you have here. I like the Hotel Frisco because it has so much good places around. I’d be going to San Francisco very soon and I think that’s the penthouse I’d go for. Thank you for a through insight.

  9. Website is very informative about hotels you can find in San Francisco,I’m very grateful to have stumbled upon this because next year am planning a trip with my family to go there. What are the odds of that?Of course some of them are a bit pricey and out of my budget but I will definitely refer this site to my partner for her advise

    Thank

  10. Huntington Hotel is definitely the goto hotel for me on this platform if ever I’m asked to choose from this list of the best hotels in Dan Francisco and believe me when I tell you that I would give a lot just to stay in this cozy environment just for one night. It is really looking so awesome and  I like the environment and where it is situated too. Maybe if we were to have our luxury tour during our get together party at the end of the year, maybe we would be able to lodge in here. It really oozes respect and elegance

  11. Amazing thanks so much for sharing.

I particularly like the hotel Nob Hill. It looks like it’s a great location and the features in the hotel sound unreal!!

We actually just visited San Fran in June so I will certainly check this out for our next trip there. Thanks again for such a great review

  12. Wow, you’ve all of a sudden made me want to visit San Fran. I’ve never had an interest until now! I did not realize that there was so much to do there, this article was really informative. And the hotel are absolutely beautiful. Extremely luxurious. I think I need to start planning my vacation now!

  13. I was in SF for an event this year march, and I lodged at hotel drisco. It was one of my most favorite hotel experiences. The location is so fabulous and the service and amenities are second to none. They provided free internet, coffee service, sumptuous breakfast, wine and cheese happy hour! There are free water bottles also in the room in glass bottles that are complimentary and now my favorite on the go bottle.
Would come back to this awesome hotel in a heartbeat when in SF!

    Regards.

  14. San Fransico is one of the places I plan on visiting when I go to the USA in 2021. I am planning a trip there to see my brother in California and then staying in some of the surrounding cities to experience them.

I think the Fairmont Heritage Place will suit our budget best and I like that it is fitted with a fireplace as we are planning our trip in winter. The bike rental will also help a lot as you can explore the city a lot better by bicycle.

  15. I love San Francisco. I only got the pleasure to visit it once at the Golden Gate City. It is very nice to see how the they keep the city the way it is where it isn’t so crowded with skyscrapers like NYC where I live. Bayview Penthouse is so beautiful! It will be perfect for my husband and I to spend our anniversary. Thanks for the suggestions:)

    Cheers!

  17. Thank you so much for another great post!  It’s pretty cool that you have one involving San Francisco.  Back when my wife and me first got together, we vowed to visit all U.S. states and at least 10 different countries.  California is on the top of our list in the states.  We actually had not considered San Francisco at first.  It was started to grow on us as we looked at pictures of California.  The The Fairmont Heritage Place looks like a pretty cool and upscale place to stay.  That would make for awesome memories!

    1. Jessie visiting all U.S. states and at least 10 different countries sounds amazing! Glad you found value in the post and like The Fairmont Heritage Place

  18. I’ve been to San Francisco once and absolutely loved it!  These penthouses are absolutely beautiful and I like that they are close to popular tourist attractions.  2901 Pacific Avenue looks like it has incredible views!  The white furniture is absolutely stunning as well. I would be afraid to drink red wine in this living room.  My favorite hotel you have listed is Hotel Zeppelin.  I love the interior and that it’s pet friendly and close to a Mediterranean restaurant.  Thanks for the inspiration to travel to San Francisco!

  19. San Francisco is a great place to be. It is really attractive, the views are fabulous (when it’s not foggy), and there are lots of fun and interesting neighborhoods and plenty of great restaurants. Spending your vacation in San Francisco is quite rewarding.

If anyone is planning their journey to San Francisco, I think the hotels listed are just great because they have some amazing features like city view, fully equipped kitchen, and some interesting places around. I’ve been to San Francisco lots of time and can tell that it’s been awesome.

  20. Thanks

  21. Hey, I know via your post that San Francisco is an amazing place to visit. San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California. Covering an area of nearly fifty square miles, the city is northern California’s cultural, commercial, and financial center. While coming in San Francisco we will stay in Hotel Drisco or The Fairmont Heritage Place.

  22. Those are some amazing hotels! It’s been a couple years since I’ve traveled anywhere and I’m just waiting for this pandemic mess to be over with, so I can take a trip somewhere special. San Francisco is at the top of my list, as I’ve been through the area before, but unable to spend any time there. While they’re all intriguing, the Omni is the one that seems to call to me the most. The pic on the page reminds me of the Titanic and it’s just the kind of place where I’d like to spend a few days. Thanks for sharing this valuable information!

  28. Nice review on San Francisco.. San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco and colloquially known as SF, San Fran, Frisco, or The City, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California.

san Francisco is a city known for its luxurious hotels and resorts, it’s a place where your vacation is guaranteed to be more fun thanks you can ever imagine…I urge to visit sometime soon

  29. “I left my heart in San Francisco” I remember that beautiful song of Tony Bennet when I read your article.  One of my retirement goals is to travel and one destination would be San Francisco, hopefully when pandemic gone or the vaccines are available worldwide, people can move freely around including travels and vacation abroad.  My choices are: The Ritz Carlton San Francisco for its simplicity and elegance while I feed awed with the Omni San Francisco that it bring us to the ancient times, yesterday still connected to us today.   Thank you for this article.
