Hotels in Acapulco

Hotels in Acapulco offer relatively cost-effective getaways in a destination whose nicknames have included “America’s Paradise”, “Pearl of the Pacific” and “Riviera of Mexico”. Once a bona fide tourist destination that welcomed the likes of John Wayne, Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth, the city has since experienced an uptick in crime. Like with many international destinations, though, resort areas generally are regarded as being safe.  If you are headed to Acapulco, take care not to wonder off the beaten path. Tourism being a catalyst toward peace, we are pleased to present hotels in Acapulco that are the area’s most well-regarded. Before we get to hotels in Acapulco, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

During the reign of Ahuizotl in the late 1400s, Acapulco became part of the Aztec Empire. The area remained in control of the Yopes, who defended it until the 1520s Spanish arrival.  Acapulco developed into a major port circa the early 1530s by way of renowned explorer Hernán Cortés. A road between the location and Mexico City had been constructed by 1531. Spanish trade contributed significantly to the rise of Acapulco, with local commodities consisting of cocoa, cotton and corn. In reality, the area has almost always been volatile. An invading Dutch fleet circa 1615 resulted in the building of Fort of San Diego, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1776 and rebuilt by 1783. José María Morelos y Pavón, a Mexican Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary, attacked and burned down the city in 1810. During the Mexican Revolution in 1910, revolutionary forces took over Acapulco’s main plaza.  Reverberations from the California gold rush of the mid-19th century, as well as the 1920s construction of Old Acapulco’s hotel and trading infrastructure by Texas businessman Albert B. Pullen, were highlights in Acapulco’s rather dark history.

A port of call for shipping and cruise lines between Panama and San Francisco, Acapulco has a population of around 700,000 people. One of Mexico’s oldest beach resort destinations, Acapulco had once been a go-to place for celebrities and international tourists. Defined by a tropical wet and dry climate, Acapulco experiences consistent temperatures ranging in the low 70s to high 80s degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. Wet season occurs from June through September, when average monthly rainfall is over 10 inches. The city is known for its beaches, cliff divers, city square, luxury facilities and high-energy nightlife, with major points of interest including Acapulco Bay, La Quebrada, La Roqueta Island, Acapulco Diamante, Bay of Puerto Marqués, Our Lady of Solitude Cathedral, Chapel of Peace, Fort of San Diego, Caleta Beach, Papagayo Park and Miguel Alemán Coastal Avenue. Acapulco’s nightlife destinations include the likes of Baby’O, Palladium and Mojito Acapulco. Popular foods include pozole (a soup or stew made from hominy with meat, cabbage, chili peppers, onion, garlic and salsa), caviche (fish or shellfish marinated in lime and mixed with tomatoes, cilantro, onions and green chilis), enchiladas and chalupas.  The Acapulco Cocktail is an alcoholic beverage made with tequila, rum, lime/pineapple/grapefruit juice and raw egg white. Now that we have a little background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Acapulco that have upheld reputability.

  1. My family and I are planning a trip to Mexico this winter. Warm weather calls us. I like the review, gives us a heads up on where to go. The one that really stands out for me is Playa La Bonfil. I like the amenities as well as the 24 hours staff on duty. Helps to feel a little safer, knowing someone is working at all times.

  2. Hi! I agree with those that say you can still go to Acapulco. I know the US government has stated that it’s a no travel zone. And that statement is based on stats. But in my books, most people don’t follow the list of safety tips you have mentioned in the link (and to me those tips are quite obvious and not difficult to follow). I’ll definitely go back.

  3. Your hotel recommendation is the best and most of all, it looks safe knowing that the security of these hotels are good for tourists. I like the Playa la Bonfil because of the affordability and the mexican vibe of the hotel. Quinta Real Acapulco is also a winner for me because its child friendly which a lot of parents would consider in looking for a place to stay.

Acapulco is a great tourist destination because of its vibrance and real epitome of Mexican island vibe. There’s so many places waiting to be explored in Acapulco such as forts, museum, historical churches, lagoons and of course the beaches. I can’t wait to experience walking the patios and be hypnotized by the culture and the arts painted and sculpted as murals. Thanks for sharing!
